Carnival season heats up

Carnival revellers

Though Monday and Tuesday have been designated as the official carnival days, patrons will not have to wait till those days to gain their Real Mas experience as much of it has been already occurring.

As the season heats up Dominicans can look forward to lots of entertainment for the next few days and tonight will be no exception.

From 8:30 p.m. the Stardom Monarch of the Tent will make the Krazy Kokonuts come alive in which one calypsonian will be crowned as the best performer for the season. Tomorrow evening another major calypso tent, Showdown Mas Camp will host a similar show where it will crown its Champ of the Camp for 2011.

At a press conference at the Dominica Calypso Association building this morning, Chairman of the Carnival Development Committee Alwin Bully said that a unique carnival is underway.

He mentioned the various shows and activities that are planned for the weekend.

On Friday evening, seven young ladies will vie for the prestigious title of ‘Carnival Queen 2011’ at the Pottersville Savannah.  Bully described the event as one that will be a massive undertaking stating that each year it is “getting bigger and better”.

He pointed out that VIP tickets for the event have already been sold out.

One of the biggest shows for the season, the Calypso finals, is set for Saturday evening at the same venue.  Patrons have been told to also expect a grand show. The calypso association has already dubbed this year’s calypso season as their most successful one. Tickets will be available from Friday.

Sunday will kick off with the Dimache Gra Way Lay Lay and a reintroduction of the Kiddies Carnival at the Portersville Savannah.

J’ouvert will begin at 4 a.m. Monday morning and end at 10 a.m. this will be followed by a parade of traditional costume bands until 2 p.m. and t- shirt bands till 10 p.m.

Carnival Tuesday will start off with a parade of bands from 9 a.m. and will culminate at 10 p.m.

Teway Vaval  is set to bring the curtains down on the season on Wednesday at the Kalinago Territory.
