Champ of the Camp will be crowned at Harlem Plaza tonight

Showdown Mas Camp Manager, Daryl Bobb

A new Champ of the Camp will be crowned tonight, when the last Showdown Mas Camp for the calypso season is staged at the Harlem Plaza in Newtown.

The event which begins at 9 p.m. is expected to see some 20 calypsonians including Benno, Duchess, Lady B, Yakima, Delah, Prosper, Sye, Explosion, Iration, Triumph, Soul Puss, Mighty Logars and Ghetto Prince.

When Dominica News Online (DNO) spoke with organizers of the show this afternoon, calypsonians were still coming in to dip for numbers for tonight’s event, so a final number of participants was not immediately available.

“Normally we have a programme of 21 calypsonians, so anywhere from 17 to 20 calypsonians will compete tonight,” Showdown Mas Camp Manager Daryl Bobb told DNO.  Bobb was still awaiting confirmation from other Showdown officials on whether he would be allowed to compete in tonight’s event.

A guest soca artiste from Antigua Claudette “CP” Peters is expected to perform at the competition. Peters is famous for her track ‘Something’s Got a Hold on Me.’

Bobb told Dominica News Online the show promises to be very classy and exciting.

The last Champ of the Camp competition was staged two years ago.
