Christmas comes to Peebles Park

“Children should be on the lookout,” one local business owner has said because Santa Claus will soon be making a visit to the Peebles Park.

The Park has come to life, as a group of companies has once again come together to light it up with Christmas lights.

Speaking to Dominica News Online on Tuesday, Emile Depooter Manager of Depex Color Lab, one of the main organizers, said this is being done every year by a team who see it fit to bring Christmas cheer to the children and people of Dominica.

In addition to the lights, Santa Claus will be making an appearance.

“There will be a special feature this year because we will be getting quite a bit of toys from the Prime Minister and anytime from this weekend; its going to be a surprise; we will have a Santa there compliments the Prime Minister who is providing the toys,” he said.

Depooter noted the whole thing is being done to bring about Christmas cheer and added that more events like this one should be done every year.

He revealed that most of the lights were donated by Jerry Brisbane which resulted in cutting of cost.

“The different towns and villages could at least try to have up some lights and we are going to work towards doing that next year because you drive around and you don’t see any lights. So next year we have enough figures and lights that we can at least do something on the poles or in the villages to really bring out the Christmas cheer,” Depooter said.

He lamented the fact that although the team enjoys decorating Peebles Park with Christmas lights, it is rather unfortunate that individuals find themselves tampering with the equipment and damaging or stealing the lights.

“I want to draw some attention to that because it is rather unfortunate that while you are working you have people destroying,” he said. “We put up the lights, leave it in the night we come back the next day and it was tampered with, somebody even stole a box which controls the lights, people would pull out the bulbs, they would pull a whole string of lights and go with it and if you are not determined, you would give up.”

A security guard had to be hired in an attempt to prevent the lights from being damaged, according to Depooter.

The team  and companies responsible for the lights and decorations include Emile Depooter and his compay Depex Color Lab, Robert Tongue and the Tongue group of companies, Jerry Brisbane from O.D. Brisbane and sons, Josephine Gabriel and Company, Royal Bank of Canada, National Cooperative Credit Union, Petro Caribe, DOMLEC, Forestry Wildlife and Parks Division, HHV Whitchurch and Company, Kurt James, Jerrile Toulon and Gloria Walsh.

Good job you all. Shame on those who steal the lights. It confuses me why the parents just let these children out on the streets at any time. Discipline is a must.

Madame Mayor, my suggestion is that in time for next Christmas season, you persuade Domlec to donate a prize of free electricity for a year to the best decorated business house in Roseau.

The city should come back as before where merchants would light up their showcases and have people take walks at night to look at same. Great Idea, Emile. I also know that the Mayor Elect has identified the same idea around Roseau. It’s already Christmas time, who knows we may just see it sometime early in the New Year. do what you have to do, Mayor Irene and let God take control.
I know your Councillors are behind you.

My highest commendations this team for their efforts to once again light up Peebles Park and bring christmas cheer around the city. I hope that the support which is needed to bring this cheer to villages around the country next year will get the much needed support that the team requires. Corporate citizens and village councils please plan to come on board.

This is refreshing to see the contribution of persons of diffrent ideas, could make an otherwise insignificant structure look so beautiful with the lights.
I wish that same attitude could be given towards Dominica all year and make Dominica the beautiful country it is suppose to be.
God Bless the work of togetherness.
