Citronier-born actress hits the big screen

Germina Jno-Baptiste

EDITOR’S NOTE: For THOSE who cannot observe or read properly, the byline on the article clearly states this article is a PRESS RELEASE and not a DNO production.

History has been achieved two times over in Jamaica, first with the first ever Dominican actress to hit the big screen and secondly, the first movie to be produced and made in any rural part of Jamaica.

Collywood, a Guerrilla movie production company, will be staging it’s world premier on the 2nd of July 2011 on the South Coast Black River Jamaica,  where the highly acclaimed  movie Hated 2 Death will be having it’s world premier.

The Island of Dominica should be proud of one of its own; an actress by the name of Germina Jno-Baptiste made history by becoming the first Dominican to hit the big screen. Germina says, “I have been working with Collywood from day one, and decided to make the trip to Jamaica to work in the movie Hated 2 Death, this was a big decision for me,  as I grew up in Dominica believing that Jamaica was a violent country;  you would read reports in the media about Gang wars and drug Lords  and how people were losing their life over trivial things. This has been an experience living and working in Jamaica, when you actually live there, you are not exposed to any of the violence, only what you read and hear about. I can say, where I live in the rural part of Jamaica, I have not seen or come across any of the violence that Jamaica is known for. I suppose it’s like anywhere you live in the world, if you hang out in wrong places, sometimes you will see and come across certain things.”

Germina acting career took off when she was living in London. She was discovered by Junior Hart, the director of Hated 2 Death and the Owner of Collywood. After a short while, Germina was signed to Collywood and whisked off to Jamaica to start work on her first feature movie. This was a dream come true for Germina who as a student in London studying to be a Heath Care Assessor, decided that the movie industry could be more exciting and better for her. She would be able to travel and see the world and work in places that she could only dream of.  For any young girl, this was a dream come true.

Germina was born in Citronier  and raised in Giraudel with her four sisters and one brother.  Five years later she went to the UK in the hope of starting a new life as so many Caribbean people sort to do. However, normally the majority is subjected to a life of hardship and struggle, which they fail to admit, in the lands of the colonial masters of the past.

Dominica will be the next island where Haated 2 Death will be premiered before going on its world cinematic tour. The company saw it fitting as Germina is the only Dominican amongst the all Jamaican cast.

Germina will no doubt open the door for other up and coming actors and actresses to follow the trend and take more Dominicans to the big screen.

Collywood is ear marking Hated 2 Death to be staged as a special event at the Arawak House Of Culture by the end of 2011. Junior Hart the CEO says “This will be an exciting event that will be coming to Dominica, we are hoping that Dominicans everywhere will be proud that one of their own has made it through to the big screen”.

There has been the elate Roosie Richards in Young and Restless, also Miss Cooke in All my Children. It is always good to hear that Dominicans are doing well. But we must be careful not to steal the wind from others sail.

Talking about big screen and leading part as far as I am reading. I saw the other press release on Germina and they are saying she is the first to play leading role as a famale actress from Dominica. Not TV madam, BIG SCREEN CINEMA

This girl has achieved great things for the little Island of Dominica. She is the 1st female to be a lead role in any movie, yes there has been other actors mainly male on the big screen (Wilcoxan) who by the way was a white man. You have to question was this the reason becuase of the skin colour he reached great hights in Hollywood. Well Germina is black and like Obama she has broken through….Go girl, as a dominican I am very proud. Big up.

A DVD found with the bodies of Candice and Phoebe last week and statements about a love triangle that went all wrong…
WAS IT FORBIDDEN love between lesbians that cost two young women their lives?
Statements to the police and evidence at the murder scene of two women in their 20s strongly suggests this.
The bodies of 20-year-old Candice Williams and Phoebe Myrie, 22, were found dumped in a pit at a home they shared in Taylor Land, Bull Bay, last week Wednesday, and police investigations are now confirming rumours of a ‘murder of passion!’
As a result, police are now on the hunt for the father of the one-year-old child of Candice Williams, Dwayne Lewis, who is wanted for questioning in the matter.
Police who were on the scene when the bodies were found, say the evidence found at the scene, suggested that the killer might have been angered by their suspected lesbian relationship.
“From yuh see di lesbian DVD whe di man throw in di pit, yuh know seh di lesbian ting have something to do with the murders … The assailant bun up mattress an fling weh sheet, so it obvious,” said an officer, who was at the scene when the bodies were taken from the pit.
Police confirm that an adult DVD case, sheets, and a pillow were found in the pit along with the bodies of the young women. A burnt mattress was also found in the yard of the house.

REPOST- First of let me congratulate Germina and her family for her accomplishment, however, I must interject that it is a journalist’s job to present the (researched) facts without bias or emotion, but this article is ladened with emotion and lack substance in that – Germina is not the first Dominican to hit the big screen; a son of our land Prince Ital Joe appeared in the movie Marked For Death Along Steven Segal. He was embarking on a music career and had an album which was a huge hit in Germany, and had Marky Mark as a guest star in one of his videos. There was also this young lady who appeared in a movie along side Denzel Washington, and a young Dominica who had a recurring role on one of the soaps on the ABC network. There are Dominicans
who are successful Doctors, Lawyers, educators Judges and professional athletes, all over the world, so to insinuate that most Dominicans who choose to make a life elsewhere than Dominica are struggling is irresponsible journalism. I am appalled that this is the angle this journalist decided to present such wonderful news. Germina Congratulations and I wish you much success.

      June 13, 2011

100% stated. The level of journalism is misleading, unprofessional and lack luster. I am in the UK and I am fully thriving with a Masters degree, moreover the majority of Dominicans I have met in the UK are fully accomplished, hard working (educated or not), and fully committed to contribute to DA whereever and whenever we can. I agree with the majority of the comments who rightfully, denounce the level of reporting. That said, Congratulations Gemima. Another young lady has makes us proud. I just wish the baselase innuendos did not have to cloud your story.

      ADMIN
AGAIN, Dominicans like to criticise without reading. DNO, like many other ‘online sites, publish press releases therefore you must check the credit line of an article to see if it was produced by DNO or credited to the source which submitted it for posting. This article in question clearly states “press release”. Google the meaning of press releases. It is obvious the article was produced by or on behalf of Ms. Jno Baptiste and not DNO….. that’s why we credit the source of the information.

Tell that to our returnees, proud holders of a U.K. passport, who prospered in that land, affording them a lifestyle and opportunities that their country of birth was unable to offer.
