Clarke-Meade wants short film on WCMF

Clarke-Meade

Events Coordinator of the Dominica Festivals Committee Natalie Clarke-Meade has challenged the private sector to produce a short film for next year’s World Creole Music Festival (WCMF).

She expressed the need to appeal to the younger generation and to begin looking for new forms of marketing the Festival and of marketing Dominica to the world through social media marketing and other forms of online marketing. She further put forth the notion that exploring the film world would be an added, fresh avenue to promoting the festival and called in the private sector to support it.

Clarke-Meade said, “I want to see a short film created for this festival. It is [already] 15 years old, after all. It should showcase not just the creole music, but the creole life that the whole of Dominica is so passionate about. The people wait for this month to wear their Robe Dwiyet and their madras and their hats and speak creole every Friday and have the Tradibelle come out and all these things. Let’s see if sponsors [will support] a short film that represents all of this that is called the Commonwealth of Dominica, in which sits the WCMF.”

She continued, “I feel that if we can challenge ourselves to get into the film world, we can bring this to a totally different level.”

The 15th edition of the WCMF will begin on the 28th of October and run through the 30th and is sponsored chiefly by The Government of Dominica and Digicel.

I have read the preceeding posts and frankly, I think the suggestion of a short film is a fantastic idea. I also believe that the person posting as ‘Dominica’ suggestion should be taken on board. The blueprints for the film could be produced by the DFC and following this sponsors should be sought. Additionally the weaknesses as mentioned by the previous posts with regards to lighting, sound etc could be addressed this year, appropriate images/videos could be captured and used in the production of this film.

Once it is completed then it can be taken around the world by the tourist board and used in advertisement and promotion exercises. People let us rally together and make this happen.

Mrs Meade, dont you think that you are the one who should initiate and supervise the project. If I were to come up with the funds for such a project, you and the D F C would start talking about copy rights and that would put an immediate hold on the project. What you should do is put the machinery in place and go let the private sector….. not just provide a hand out to the project, but invest in the development of the project and we will see things moving from the “theory… BLA BLA” stage.

a short film sounds good… but my issue with the filming of creole fest are the dvd’s… when i look at the fest on dvd i only see only one or two camera positions… one seem to be on stage to the side of the performer and the other is way out in the crowd on some kind of crane… with a direct stage shot… this is dull and boring… a show like the creole fest should have aerial shots… which move from left to right… back and front with on hand live editors… controlling which camera shots are seen as well as light controllers for better enhancement of the show… not lights which get bright automatically… but those which go in rhythm with the beat… even a mighty sparrow dvd i saw had better camera footage than creole fest….

nice blog indeed…but i dont think we are in that kinda showbiz calibre around here in Dominica…

this fest look and is budjeted like a street blocko in my view just lacks the props and other aspects which go with a world event..

just look at their sound design..
1 way too much echo due to the close range of the lineary towards the stands.
2.the distribution of the sound is hollow, for instance when you infront of the stage you cant feel the impact, so the sound isnt compacted and rather scattered upwards.
3.lighting systems are way basic in terms of what the industry carries.
4.their is a difference between a festival and a concert layout, creole in the park has the ideal layout which is standard practices around the globe because of its duration, as a fest must have a pinic or camp style setting as is the norm in the world.
5.food and drink layout is outdated as the WCMF has it..all over the globe patrons eat and drink and can still envision the acts on stage either direct view or by huge jumbo trons.

so all in all we still have our feet in our mouths due lack of doing things the right way which will gain respect in the proffessional and correct way others do it.

showbiz is and always be a creative edge of higher levels and not doing things at a low keyed aspect, we need to learn the correct way of doing things in Dominica!

I agree, we need to understand the difference between a festival and a concert. The WCMF, as it has been staged in the past, is on the lines of a “concert”. It would be better, and more beneficial to Dominica, if it was presented as a “festival”. Think Newport Jazz Festival, then see the classic film “Jazz On A Summer’s Day”.

Our Literary Festival comes close to what a festival should be all about.
