Concert to commemorate deadly 2017 passage of Hurricane Maria set for later today

Peebles park immediately after Maria and a year later

International artists Rev. Shirley Caesar and Kurt Karr, and Edwin Yearwood from Barbados, will perform at a concert to highlight Dominica’s recovery journey two years after the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria in 2017, to be held from 4:00 p.m. today at Windsor Park Sports Stadium.

“Just as the world joined hands in the recovery effort, says organizer of the “And Can It Be” concert, Leroy “Wadix” Charles, “it will again unite in a variety of ways to support Dominica. Internationally acclaimed recording artists, media personalities and athletes will join their local and regional counterparts to participate in this historic moment.”

Charles, who is Vice-Chairman of the “And Can it be” committee, says the show which is free to the public, will be one of reflection, sober celebration, song of praise and dance.

Shirley Caesar is a headliner on the show

He said told Dominica News Online (DNO) that the show’s mission is to give thanks to the Most High and everyone who assisted Dominica in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

“It is an event to mark the second anniversary of the passage of Hurricane Maria. We feel that Dominica is fortunate and observers which saw the ravages felt that Dominica would have taken 20 years to rebuild and what we have done so far we feel that it is miraculous and it is indeed worthy of giving thanks and praise,” Charles explained.

“Everything is possible and that is the mission statement behind it seeing where we were after the devastation of Maria and that is why the show is being held to thank everyone. That is why it is not in any other format but a gospel format where we will give thanks and praise to the Father. We’re also thanking every corperate entity that gave us any assistance possible,” he added.

The line-up for the show will include performances by Michele Henderson, Ophelia Marie and Colton- T, Chorale with drummers, Mass Gospel Choir, Children’s Choir, Combined Caribbean Police Band, Dance troupe, Concert Band, and an African dance troupe.

Donations will also be collected to assist the people of The Bahamas during these trying times.

Kurt Karr is another international artist who will perform at the event

Charles addressed criticism about the cost of the event to the country at this time particularly the high fees being paid to the international artistes on the line up.

“The international acts are doing this for a very extra reduced rate, almost like a give-away based on the information I have. The artists are doing this specifically for Dominica mainly because of what it means to Dominica and they are in tune with what we have gone through; they are in tune with how important it is at this time to give this particular thanks and praise,” Charles stated

He added, “We hope that we can inspire people to see how fortunate that we are at this point in time. We are still in the hurricane season; there’s no escaping it every year so if we continue to give thanks and praises for our blessings so far, hopefully, miracles can happen to us.”

Charles further expressed his concern about what he says is the direction that Dominicans are taking because of politics and hopes that this event will bring citizens together as one undivided people.

“The international acts are doing this for a very extra reduced rate, almost like a give-away” (Kurt Karr)

Regardless of fees, it behooves an artist to have a conscience. I wonder if these “international artists” are aware of the true state of Dominica at this point in time, let alone the preachers!

This unnecessary holiday will affect the already comatose economy in a very negative way. Instead of bringing pastoral guidance and astute leadership to the nation, Mr. Skerrit spreads his political toxicity to every house in Dominica . The country’s treasury and the business sector have suffered enormously from the PM’s ill-advised politically driven decisions. Cognitively, the man is a political Infant not deserving of the position he presently holds.

Here is the police on the reason for the concert: “Traffic measures to be implemented
(for what again police?) “for Hurricanee Maria thanksgiving and celebration concert”
So Skerrit has been telling us that the reason for the holiday today is to celebrate and give thanks for Maria, the police telling us the same thing and today they changed the tune to commemorate? Gason look confusion from a confused and Not Too Sure government

How much is this concert going to cost? Wouldn’t that money be better spent alleviating the suffering of those still living under tarpaulins since Hurricane Maria?

I have never seen so much official confusion in my life.. When Skerrit made the announcement on Sunday, he said it was to “celebrate and give thanks for Maria” Because he was rebuked on q95 last night he changed it today to “commemorate”. Also, It was a half day holiday and changed to a full day. Never have I seen so much confusion. But let’s not be fooled because James 3:16 says “For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.” Furthermore, 1 Cor. 14:33 says “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace,…”
So Satan is not only a liar, who comes to steal, kill and destroy but also the author of confusion. So where we see Satan, we see confusion and ALL EVIL WORKS!!

This sounds more like a camouflage Political Party event. The timing make it smells, and I used to be around fishermen, so I know, and can smell fish from a mile away.

Jeffrey, I often ask myself, how can any sane person give support to this thoughtless man and his braindead disciples. Dominica got huge monetary assistance and plenty debt forgiveness recently. Where has all this money gone? The country is a FAILED STATE. Without the Chinese assistance and the help from many donor countries, Dominica would fail to exist. Skerrit and his corrupt party are an existential threat to Dominica’s posterity.

This is a purely political event by the DLP and its false God Skerrit. Many people will boycott this event because the entire DLP party is steeped in evil, something new to Dominican politics. I do not want to be in any event, where people wear clothes on stage with devilish symbols. What else will be present that I cannot discern? And what will be the effect on me?
Take the contribution and at least replace the tarpaulin on one house in Dominica .There are numerous houses belonging to those who do not support this regime still under tarpaulin.Wickeds!
