De Professor has retained his crown as Dominica’s Junior Monarch for the third time in a row.
Professor, whose real name is Sheldon Alfred, performed his calypso “My Exposition” well enough to top 16 other competitors at Harlem Plaza Thursday night.
In fourth place was Irish Kid of the St. John’s Primary School, third place was Janae of the Convent High School, and Princess Chels of the North East Comprehensive School came in second place.
Professor, a 15-year-old Saint Mary’s Academy student, has given indications he will go after the Junior Monarch title again next year, telling the crowd at the Harlem Plaza that he has one more year to compete again on the Junior Monarch stage.
De professor explained in an interview that his song, which was written by Ian Jackson, was about an exposition that his teacher had asked him to write. He, in his song, chose to write about political issues affecting his country.
“It takes a lot of courage but at the end of it you enjoy yourself,” he said while describing his road to the crown.
He encouraged young calysponians like him to take on the challenge.
Other calypsonians who competed included three Dominica Community High School students- Donella Sabroache -“Lady Sabbie”, Aldia Titre -“De Inspector” and Delroy Jno-Charles -“Dr Chucky.”
Four other students represented the Convent High School; Savahnn Raine James appeared as “Junior Star”, Nneka Merrifield-“Nika”, Stanice George “Princess Aries”, Medisha Augusting was “Medallion.”
Jadiel “De Jewel” Jules and Nyjah ”De Prophet” Williams represented the St Mary’s Academy.
Siedah “The Mighty Spyeedah” Charles represented to Orion Academy. Kiefer Francis or “Golden Boy” represented the St Mary’s Primary School while Nacheal Walsh –“De Nacheal” competed for Isiah Thomas Secondary School.
Jeremiah Morancie sang on behalf of the Dominica Grammar School.
Musical accompaniment was provided by the Triple Kay Global.
The event was organized by the Leo Club of Dominica.

4 real eh. de crwn wasnt sheldons own at all this year. he performed well, yessssssss. his props were good, yesssssssss.his stage movement was good, yesssssssss. de thing is, there were 2 young ladies in the competition who did bettr then him. princess chels and janae. wen they were givin the position and it came dwn 2 these 2 grlz and sheldon, i thought sheldon would hav been second runner up, janae or chelsea 1st runner up and either 1 of those 2, winner

i am an sma student who was supportin sheldon. but,2 b honest wit u,dis year he really nd truly didn’t deserve it nd we all no dat. dat crown should hav been princess chels’s own….d judges dem jus 1 sided

Princess Chelz is not perturbed, disturbed, nor agitated by Professor’s victory. If it is God’s will she will be on stage next year and promise to win. Congrats to professor!

I listened to the calypso contest on line, and this young man was my pick, nice seeing the person i rooted for. I know these kids are young and coming, but i believe in vocal. This young man can sing. not talk the song. Congrats!

Besides it’s time for young people to take interest in their country, i’m not saying that they can’t sing about teenage things but why limit yourself? Teenagers would not stay teenagers forever! People you all must learn to accept defeat. Sheldon is Superior above the rest – he has more clarity, sounds more mature, and he can sing because I have never heard him go off key. Frankly, I know him personally, but he deserves it because he puts his music to his song all by himself and gives his performance serious preparation. Hats off to you Sheldon until you step down!!!

Its about time we start to be fair in competitions. The top four was indeed the best four of the show but the positions were all wrong. We have to let our children be children according to Tasha P and stop encouraging our Junior Monarch’s to sing on topics fit for adults. All Junior Monarch contestants are bleow the voting age of 18 so why should one sing and win with a “political song”?.
It’s high time we also stop thinking that first timers do not deserve the crown. When it is good let us say it is good and give the children what they deserve.
The judging should be transparent. They shoudl start announcing (just like the queen show), who had “best lyrics” “best melody” “best presentation” etc…. I think persons will appreciate the level of transparency this method will afford.
I must say I am very disappointed with the outcome of the show and I really hope the judges are able to sleep wiith a clear conscience tonight.
Its sad to see how u guys get on the person they supported didnt win a competition.. U guys just look down on the person that wins everyyear.. De Professor sang a political song, yes, but he brought it out frm the point of view of a young man.. All young ppl these days, of voting age or not, can clearly say the political issues we face.. So if the young man puts in song.. Why be so negative.sigh
