DNCW commends Tasha P

The Dominica National Council of Women (DNCW) has commended the efforts of Tasha ‘Tasha P” Peltier who became the first woman in 54 years to win the Calypso Monarch title.

‘Tasha P” also became the first calypso artiste to win three titles in one season

President of the DNCW Josephine Dublin Prince believes Tasha P’s song “Woman Time” should be used as an anthem for the women’s movement in Dominica.

“She has used her talent to convey to all of us that women have been there historically and the voices of women were not heard until now,” she said.

Dublin Prince said women play an important role in nation building.

“I want to congratulate her for this historic approach. This history in making because after 54 years a woman can become the calypso monarch. It says a lot about women too, that if they are given an opportunity, they too can step up to the plate just like men,” she said. “Tasha P’s victory should be seen as a victory for women in Dominica.”

men please don’t take Tasha p victory for your sorrow. just say good luck Tasha p, she deserves to win. besides its only a music show. you stupid men. she still gonna need a man to get her pregnant, and while she is sick in the hospital we are out drinking beer with the boys.so i think we should let the girls celebrate. on the other hand. Mr. Mr. lets try 2c how well they can take over and on top of us in the bedroom plus, let the woman make the house on her money and the men can come marry her give her ten children. then get a divorce and still get half in court. Tasha p that sounds fun to me as far as i am concern. (95)

Society makes me sick…why is it ok for a woman to sing against the next gender and its ok, the discriminatory tone is sickening. People listen to the words of the song and see how the song seek to diss the male gender and its seems ok to the different NGO out there is Dominica like DNCW…

And i know some of you going to jump on my back, but one must give TASHA her respect for achieving such success, in my humble opinion she was the clear winner on the night of the show. In addition, i value and respect that roles that women are taking in society, and yes in some cases they are more effective then men at certain jobs……….

My issues is with the content of the song and the language used in the song to belittle the next agenda…..i’m hoping that next year someone can sing a song “woman has no place in society” and lets see how many people will be calling the “hot seat” to repudiate a song of such content against woman but shouting woman time will embrace the song that belittle males in society…..had the song been about the freedom of women in society it would be a prefect song, but instead it seeks to attack the next gender with those discriminatory language……

What if Laga Gaga comes out and sing a song entitled “White People time” I wonder how many of us would embrace such…..Discrimination is wrong in no matter form it is displayed and while I love tasha voice and talent this song has no place in our society today!!!!

I have a 9 year old son who goes to a mixed school. He always says to me that the teachers love the girls more than the boys. This is very discouraging to him as he thinks that he cannot please the teacher as well as a girl would. On top of that he is now hearing “woman time, woman time” everywhere he goes and he says “I told you so mammy. The girls getting more attention”.

At such a young age he already recognizes that he is marginalized. At the same time, if a man had a song “Man time” speaking against the marginalization of men and boys, there would be a huge backlash of negativity. People in this forum can call me stupid how much they want, I have sons and I tell you it is time for there to be an outcry for our boys.

Woman time woman time, Yah yah yah. Everybody loves the song and I do too. But after all the professions called in the song, why Dominican woman think they need to expose themselves to get a man to notice them. Yes is carnival and you don’t want to cover all your body you say, but mercy, you think you really needed that short short short pant with you vagina hanging out? You really think a man will take you serious? You can say you dressing for yourself all you want, we all know that is not true.

I think it should be woman time to respect themselves, dress right, leave other woman man alone, dress our daughters like children and not young versions of us and to be an example in society. I love that song so much. I hope our young ladies will stop singing from one side of their mouth ” woman time woman time” then have men disrespecting them all over the place.

As a woman myself, i tend to disagree when she says “no more in the kitchen”. Who we sending in the kitchen? Those children that should be playing and being children? Or are we doing Subway and KFC all the way? It is parents responsibility – both mother and father – to be in the kitchen. And i so like food! Well I will be in the kitchen when i come home.

    • Dominican Abroad
      March 9, 2011

what I think she means is that women are not to be looked at as the only ones to be in the kitchen, some men think that the kitchen is the reponsibility of a woman

      • confused!!
        March 9, 2011

yep…i agree with Dominican Abroad…she never meant that women aren’t to cook…but it was meant that a woman’s sole job and purpose should not be tending to the home like a slave and going unappreciated.

        March 9, 2011

You are just thinking what she means, but you really dont know what she means….

    • chemist
      March 10, 2011

no more in the kitchen is not a literal meaning. It’s referring to the days when women were simply seen as homemakers…where their purpose was to take care of the home..cooking cleaning…etc.

I was okay with let our children play, But her second song was a little sexist… I mean we already know that women are exceling more than our men in D/A, Why remind us. All we do is smoke marijauna, play football and pass up and down on our little scooters. All that song did was lower the self esteem of men in D/A, Well what ever self esteem we had left.. Anyway she has a very good voice, Tho i’m a Karesa fan myself.

    • starz
      March 9, 2011

the song should now be an encouragement for the men to excel over the women

congratulations tasha P. you made history and i believe it was well deserved. But i need the women outthere to understand the difference between standing up and being sextist. it was all about man before and it wasnt good, i noticed some stupid women want to make thins all about women y make it one sided. It should all be about equality and not any one side being better.

  9. hey!
    March 9, 2011

I forgot to commend Tasha P for a job well done. I believe “woman time” is a song of substance. To all women out there, please continue to empower yourselves; reach for the stars. Don’t limit yourselves. LIVE UP and Most importantly—>Be happy and love yourselves 8)

Who was the last woman to win Calypso in Dominica? I was not conceived as yet…

    • Conscious
      March 9, 2011

Tasha P is the first woman to win the calypso monarch. THE media gives the impression that there was a female monarch before, fifty four years ago. Tasha P has created history. The 54 years refer to the 54 years of calypso competition

    March 9, 2011

I am really happy Tasha P won the Monarch because she deserved it. I am also very concerned about this woman time business…I believe in equality but I seem to feel that some women want to be at a level greater than men or they just merely want us to pay the price for something. God has designed most men to be more physical, have no period, and lack child bearing abilities for a reason. When all women quick to shout woman time, I hope you will be prepared to pay for your own stuff, open the door for yourself, pull your damn chair, and be the boss in the bedroom. I am happy for any success for women…I know you have been oppressed in the past and even now in Saudi Arabia women can’t drive. In Dominica this is not the case. So women, be careful about what you ask for…

      March 9, 2011

You are so pessimistic. Why do you want to remain subservient to men. Women have been discriminated against for thousands of years, sexually, physically and otherwise. It’s time we stepped to the plate and demand the respect we deserve!! IT’S WOMAN TIME!!! Congrats Tasha P! You did what we couldn’t do!

    • Roz
      March 9, 2011

What does having a period and child bearing capabilities have to do with paying for your own stuff or opening the door for yourself? Are you trying to connect them by cause and effect? If so then your logic is flawed, and it is evidence that we need to educate ourselves as a society. I am a firm believer in equivalence of the sexes…different but their value is the same. Dispute that.

    • calypso lover
      March 9, 2011

If you know a man in DA who pays for his woman’s stuff, opens the door for her and pulls her chair (!!!) send him over man! It’s woman time because DA woman are already supporting themselves and their families while most of the men are supporting their smoking, drinking and mistresses.

we seem to have lost the original cultural flavor in our carnival, women are so disrespectful to themselves, its just not a pleasant sight to see how these women carry on on carninal day, guess Taha P and her writers should concentrate on that aspect of women and their behavior on carnival day and generally, i am really ashame of what i saw our dominican women doing on these two days

    • confused!!
      March 9, 2011

no i swear…that’s the dumbest thing i’ve heard…the song focused on one aspect of women…not here you go talking about another aspect of a selected group of women. your conflicting ideas now…take the time and go back to your grandparents and see who held what responsibilities and why they held those responsibilities and then you tell me what the song was about!

People, do you know that a woman also won the Calypso Monarch title in Trinidad? 26 years old and she beat Chalkdust (second runner-up) and other veterans. And yes – they have a Calypso Queen competition too!
Check out the videos of her two songs at
    http://guyaneseonline.wordpress.com/2011/03/09/trinidads-calypso-monarch-2011/

Tasha P, congratulations. DNCW, this lady is truly a good role model for our young girls. Use the opportunity to have her meet and talk to teenagers at schools. I look forward to seeing more great women in calypso.

    March 9, 2011

Let me say congrats to Tasha P it was a job well done and another thing let us not sell ourselves or should I say our calypso and calypsonians short. Gone are those days when Trinidad was the home or should I say the Head Quarters of calypso, but I can say clearly and without any bias that Trinidad certainly got nothing over Dominica and I would state further that the young lady (Karene Asche) who won the calypso monarch in Trinidad is no way in the league of Tasha P and could not come close. So please let us appreciate who and what we have. We may not be the best but we are not far from the best.

Calypso is not my thing but I was on a bus and I heard the song “let children be children” and I ws touched. this is just powerful song and UNICEF should contract tasha P for that song as a theme song for the protection of children. The other claypsonians need to reasearch more and take a page from Tasha’s book. People hear enough about corruption on the hot seat . The calysonians need to sing songs that will cause persons to refelct on their attitudes, behaviors , values and reactions to others . Congratulations but my wish is that you would use your voice and talent to glorify God.

    • confused!!
      March 9, 2011

i agree with you! 100% agree…that song would do a lot to boost the works of UNICEF and we have our own regional office in Barbados so I don’t think it would be hard to do.

and as for those other calypsonians…is like we hear the topics on the hot seat and with lennox linton and by the time they come and sing about them…it’s like ok now…next!

DNCW – tell Tasha P that next year she has to tell women how to get woman power.
The first thing she has to do is tell women to stop humiliating themselves on carnival day and calling it sexy. I saw a woman bending with her hand touching the ground, wining away for a camera man and her fuke chilot of her very, very, very short pants was barely covering the road to Jericho. That is woman power?
I saw little girls in costume bands with bikini costumes, all their body outside. That is woman power? I saw so many unaccompanied little children. That is woman power?
And as for the outfits – nothing to admire because nothing left to the imagination. Young, old, fat, slim – they in dat.
Woman must free themselves from the slavery of men. Men will still be attracted to you if you dres properly.
    Earn respect by respecting yourself.

I have no problem in seeing a YOUNG or AVERAGE size female in some of the outfits worn for carnival (or any other day).

My dislikes are the ones who are clearly a size 14plus and still insist on wearing clothes for a size 10/12, with everything hanging out. As for the mothers (even grandmothers), ladies please act your age, leave those outfits for your daughter/granddaughter.

Women CANNOT shout ‘Woman Time/Power’ when they disrespect themselves.

As a woman of middle age, I dont need to expose my body to get attention. I prefer to use my education to achieve. I dont think a man should open doors just because you’re a woman, he should open it out of politness, be you male or female.

I always ask the same question: Do these women have mirrors at home.

What does making them wear short pants make them dumb or something? Women & men have Equal rights. I’m shure most men love their women. The women are just doing that to satisfy their lover and to have a good time…
