A play, which was scheduled for the closing of DOMFESTA this weekend, has been postponed to June 14, 15 and 16.
A TEMPEST was being staged as a tribute to renowned Martiniquan writer and thinker Aime Cesaire.
The play, which is directed by well known Dominican playwright and director Dr. Alwin Bully, is one of Cesaire’s best known and best loved plays.
It is based on Shakespeare’s THE TEMPEST and is set on a Caribbean island where the character Prospero controls all the inhabitants, two of whom, Ariel, a house slave and Caliban, the revel, are planning a revolt.
“It is the story of colonialism and how it operates in developing countries seen through the eyes of Caliban,” Bully said. “It is a highly entertaining fantasy at the same time, full of music, fast action and humour”.
The 14-member cast is led by J.Grimner and Haxey Salamat with movement by professional Martiniquan choreographer, Christian Gernet and costumes and set designed by Bully.
The play is produced by Alliance Francaise de La Domininiqe and La Cour des Arts.
A TEMPEST will be performed at the Alliance Francaise Centre on Elmshall Rd. at 8pm each night in recognition of the 100 Anniversary of the birth of Cesaire, considred the father of the Negritude movement.
Tickets are $20 at Alliance Francaise and Bull’s Eye Pharmacy.
Patrons should book early as seating is limited.
Yes Arawak is more comfortable and more central in terms of seeking transportation home.
Why not bring the play to the Aawark house of culture at least for two nights. I think more people will go there to see the play.
