Two high level executive members of the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA) viewed the original recording of a performance by Hunter as the organization begins looking deeper into whether allegations are true or not that the three-time monarch had cheated at the recently held calypso semi finals.
However no decision has been made on whether he is culpable of any wrong doing.
Darryl Bobb, a member of the executive who viewed the recording at Marpin’s studio on Wednesday, told Dominica News Online that the entire executive will meet and a final decision will be made on the matter.
No exact date was set for the meeting but DNO, who was present at the viewing, was told it will be held “pretty soon.”
Controversy erupted when it was alleged that Hunter had written some of the lyrics of his song on the palm on his hands and had read them during his performance at the semi finals.
Hunter has denied the allegation and President of the DCA, Kelvin “Ras Kelly” Williams who also viewed the tape on Wednesday, said having lyrics written on the palm of one’s hand during a performance is not necessarily an offense.
Williams remained tight-lipped on the matter during the viewing, insisting that a statement will be made after the entire executive of the association meets.
Discussion on the matter, mostly on social media, continued unabated on Wednesday. Many say Hunter should admit his “wrong doing” and move on while others insist that he had done nothing wrong.

Hunter shame on you for trying to make this a joke. Noone is trying to bring you down, be a man and own up to what you did. Cheating is wrong in every part of the world in every discipline. The fact that you went to the stardom tent last night and put a plastic bag over your hand is sad. This is no joke, if it was a joke you would have never gone to such lengths to try to make it to the next round. Calypso is serious business in Dominica.

Geeze it is sad but most people in Dominica will not see the wrong in this because they have probably cheated on exams, stolen things etc. If something is wrong it is wrong, if it is right it is right ……no matter who does it. People need to know how to take responsibilty for their actions. Some things are not necessarily illegal but they are not right. The comments on this issue are amazing to me. For people to say that they do not see anything wrong about what was done is really sad. To blame Matt and Lennox is even sadder. But to these people Hunter smells as sweet as a rose.

I did not attend the show.However, I do not seem to understand how a singer jumping all over the stage a mike in one hand singing is able to read at the same time words of a song writtrn on the palm of his hand.I suppose it had to be written in bright large letters so that he could read it easily. Someone should make me understand this.

I just watched the little bit of video that is recorded. The video should show Hunter actually reading from his palm. Yes, words are written on the palm, but I did not see him reading. For that matter, where the palm is shown you do not se his face. I cannot judge from that whether he was reading or not. Maybe there is other or stronger evidence:cannot see it in that short video. Mark you, I am not a Hunter fan, just trying to give a little analysis of what I see.
Kathy why are you making this complicated? He had his lyrics on his hand (he admitted that to Marpin although he said it was something else on his hand on Matt). You have to actually see him reading the notes? Are you serious? Do you aware that someone can just turn their eye without turning their heads to read something in their hands? I believe that a separate body of people should be the ones meeting and giving a final decision on the matter. Not the executive. Why? Within the executive are other participants (who are also ‘finalists’). Therefore, one can safely conclude that there can easily be a biasness in their final decision, because, in truth, Hunter is indeed a competition for them. I’m not saying that Hunter did not do as alleged. What I’m saying is, the members of the executive are not in a position to handle the matter in fairness and they should even recuse themselves. And in the future, I believe that memebers of the Calypso association executive should not be allowed to associate themselves in any way with Calypso, whether participating, or writing for a calypsonian for which money could be recieved. It will soon undermind the integrity of the Calypso Association.
Poor Hunter to have such a controversy stain his amazing career. I am really rooting for him and hope that if it so warrants, he pay his dues be it step down from this years competition or whatever, and is able to move forward from this and overcome stronger than ever.
The bottomline is, its still his song for which he allegedly wrote his lyrics not to say he stole someones song or murdered someone or stole people’s tax money

I do not blame Hunter for the lines on his palms because we do not know when he wrote it, whether he read it or not. I blame him for calling Matt show and making a fool of himself. He did not have to say anything.
It is easy to verify if Hunter looked at his palm at the time the line was being played. Here is what I suggest:
Play the Hunter’s entire performance. Listen for when the lines on his palm appears in the song and if he appears to be looking at his palm at the same time then he is cheating otherwise he was not. He must be looking at his palm at the same time the line is being sang.
The DCA say it and they are convinced Hunter erred. He should save face and his reputation as a 3 time King and a corporal of Police and do the honorable thing and step out of the competition
I am a Hunter Fan, but I would advise Hunter right now it’s best he step down, to save some face. Do not escalate this more and have the wrong and strong attitude. You are a father, a policeman, set the example. You wrote your lyrics on your hand, whether you watched your hand or not it is not right. It is a conspiracy against Hunter. Certain members from the Calypso Association on a WITCH HUNT and we all know who they are. How can you be a competitor in A FINAL AND STILL BE PART OF AN INVESTIGATION. You have to remove yourself so as not to show your bias intentions.

I have a serious issue with Lennox Linton going on about “CHEATING” when is a CHEAT a CHEAT when there is no law up until that point that you cannot use a prompt. If Hunter has broken the calypso law ten so be it. The thing is the Calypso Association needs to assess the sitution based on REGULATION not on is ingenuity. Now as far as bringing the Association in disrepute, there is no such thing except to set the precedence going forward. I am dissapointed that all the attention on Q this morning is that he cheated when cheat in terms of calypso has not been defined.

Ok Forensic Expert. The first photo DNO showed his left palm with the writing facing him. I didn’t see any mike in his left hand rather i saw the words to the second verse of his sony. If you are an expert as you claim you probably let all the criminals out because of you false positives. Also did you analyzed the drugs that was recently sent to Barbados. I am very disappointed in the response from the Head of the calypso association. Wrong is wrong and this a matter of ethics. Even though there’s no rule, this type of behavior is unacceptable and shows disrespect to the efforts of the other competitors. If this allegation is indeed true, does the Calypso Association have a rule against what they are accusing the Hunter of? If there is no rule then what is the point of the investigation?

We have seen many a time the embarrassment calypsonians experience for forgetting their lines. A real professional would know that if that is likely to happen during a performance the risk should be mitigated. If there is no rule against prompting then no offense was committed. The controversy stems from people’s lack of ingenuity and implicit rules. The committee has no weight here except for making prompts forbidden going forward! As it stands Hunter demonstrated professionalism and tact so he doesn’t look like a fool on stage. Good on you Hunter!

this is a minor situation, we have more important things to worry about. How can Hunter sing and read at the same time, as it was said notes were written on the left hand, was he holding the mic in his left hand or not? come on people, move on. Dominica is already too much in the spotlight for negativity. We have too much to fix in D/A as it is, it’s carnival time let us all come together and stop fighting each other.
Sometimes its not the event or incident but it is the principle behind it that we need to consider. If you go into an exam room with any written material; paper, on your body or otherwise it is regarded as ‘intent’ to cheat and you may be disqualified. As far as I see it the calypso semi-finals is an exam…You are competing against others, and you are judged to see if you are good enough to advance to the next round. That being said you have a responsibility to be fair and honest during the exam.
DNO or anyone concerned: Isn’t it a matter of “conflict-of-interest” when the famous Hunter is the Sec/Treasurer (or member)of the DCA and simultaneously, is a competitor under the same DCA umbrella/organization?
Don’t you think there will be biasness when it comes to selecting him in the finals (over someone else who might be equally deserving)?
Also, it may create hesitation among his peers (Executives) to call him out (wrong or right), regarding the “hand-that-rocked-the cradle” – lyrics written on palm of hand.

On what ground will he be disqualified?
Because the DCA des not have any forbidden rule on the matter there is nothing they can d to the Hunter. So the issue will just remain in the court of public opinion as the DCA will remain silent with their findings. The rest is left to Hunter – his public image and musical career is his to fix.
I see it like this: Calypsonians in the past have been disqualified or not made it through for forgetting their lines or for repeating lines or verses of their songs. So by precedent this is the rule “you forget your lines; you are out”
So the rule should apply to Hunter. If he read lines from his palm then it is fair to assume that he forgot his lines and needed his palm to come to his assistance and therefore the rule established by precedent above should be applied.

The fact remains that the gentleman sought to gain an unfair advantage by having information to jog his memory during his performance. When the same thing happens during scholastic examinations its called cheating – we admonish our children when they commit such acts. Shouldn’t the same standard apply even to beloved calypsonians? Or is it one standard for those we like and another for those we don’t. I can only imagine the hell fire that would have been brought to bear on the likes of Beno, Bobb, or Webb if they were the ones guilty of such an act. Grow a conscience!
