Miss St. Lucia, Lucia-Oneka McKoy, has walked away with 2011 Miss Caribbean Culture title held in Nevis last night.
The show was held in St. Kitts and Nevis in two parts. Sunday night saw the Swimsuit Competition in St. Kitts while rest of the show as held in Nevis with the remaining segments -Talent, Evening Wear and Interview.
Dominica was represented by Jacinta Fagan but she did not manage to take home a winning spot.
According to the St. Kitts-based website SKNVibes.com. the First Runner-up position went to Miss Anguilla- Shellya Rogers, who also took Best Talent and Best Interview while Miss St. Kitts-Abigail Liburd took Second Runner-up and Best Evening Wear. Miss Barbados-Dannyele Teneel Leslie was named Third Runner-up.
The website reported that McKoy dominated part one of the show winning Best One Piece and Two Piece Swimsuit and Best Ambassadorial Wear.
Participants for the show came from Dominica, Nevis, St. Vincent, Jamaica, Guyana, Montserrat, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Kitts and Anguilla.

I must first say that I am not Dominican but I love the island and its people, they are warm and very friendly. Being a former pageant queen I must encourage you to support your girl and show her that you are there for her regardless of the outcome. Being on that stage takes a lot of courage and preparing for an event of such nature takes commitment, we are often quick to judge others but seldom ask ourselves whether we are capable of doing the task. Knowing that you have the support of your people makes a huge difference psychologically and can sometimes be the deciding factor on one’s performance. There’s a saying that goes “if you can’t be with the one you love, love the one you’re with.” She may not be your choice for queen but she is the queen, with every word of encouragement it makes her stronger and every derogatory comment breaks her down even more.

Because the Ms Caribbean Culture and Ms Jaycees are held in the same week, I think the Queen Show Committee should now consider allowing the 1st or 2nd runner up to participate in Ms Caribbean Culture to allow for better preparation of the reigning queen to participate in Ms Jaycees. What you don’t want is a fatigued contestant trying to do her best. This is a formula for shut down under pressure. Good luck to Jacintha. After all you are the queen.

Why all this first runner up bashing? It seems that the first runner up represented Dominica in St. Kitts and Nevis. The first runner up is not responsible for Miss Fagan poor showing in regional pageants.
I was priviledge to look at the show online last night. I paid $10 US for the live streaming and i would describe Jacinta performance as mediocre. In the talent round she sang a song prayer to the Caribbean and she sang very flat. In the evening wear she was much better but her dress was not original it was a dress that was worn by the Marigot nurse who came !st runner up when Marah Waters won. In the question and answer question she was asked if she was an ambassador for Dominica which World person she would like to invite to Dominica and what was the reasons to would invite the person to Dominica for. She chose Barack Obama which was very well thought out but she never answered the second part of the question. In my opinion there were 7 contestants who were better than Ms Dominica and based on what i saw Miss Dominica stands a snowball chance of winning in Antigua. I still want to wish her well and hope she can make us proud.

We as dominicans are waiting for her in Antigua to give our full support. But what I do not undersstand is how could dominica choose one who is not queen material to represent them? Where are those girls like Marcella larocque, Diane, Margaret rose, and that last girl “who could not get a sponsor at the last minute” that did dominica so proud? common Dominica it is not a consistency competition it is a beauty queen competition also. The girls in antigua are properly trained before the queen show. I won’t go into all the details but if you look at miss universe you will have an idea of what i am speaking about. they go to beauty seminars. They learn how to speak in public, they go to the gym as a team. They are well prepared for the show. In antigua any girl could represent because they are all queen material.

St. Kitts and Nevis did not expose their ace for the Miss Caribbean Culture Queen. The 2nd runner up winner, Miss Abigail Liburd, represented St Kitts while Miss Verna Grant represented Nevis. The National Carnival Queen of St. Kitts and Nevis is Miss Iantavian Queeley, the winner of Miss Carival 2011 in St. Vincent. She will be representing St. Kitts and Nevis in Antigua this weekend in the Miss Jaycees Caribbean Queen Pageant. The other contestants have their work cut out for them. Remember she swept the field in St. Vincent. There are17 contestants in Antigua and it’s their 50th Anniversary.

I know the judging was not fair in Dominica, she did not have to win. some of the girls that did not place would do better on the pageant than she did. She did to get off that high horse and send the 1st runner up to represent the Island. When you enter into a competition, you expose yourself to a panel of judges who may or may not see in your favour. This is a risk you take when entering pageants. I must say I admire these brave people because I could never be one of them. I am just reminded of the reign of Marcella LaRocque when she was on an amazing winning streak. She remembered clearly one individual telling her they were waiting for her in one of the islands and lo and behold, they did not only steal the crown away from her, they did not even place her. Queen shows are like facing a jury; they decide your fate and many times it is not good. I would just encourage this young lady to hold her head high.

When do you recall the 1st runner-up taking part in a regional show in Dominica’s history? It is a good idea and one that I support, but the committee 1st has to take that decision before the actual National show and then and only then and with consistency, the 1st runner-up will be able to represent us in 1 of the 4 regional shows that we always participate in.
Know your history before you comment. The year leandra won, Sonilia laville placed first runner-up and representd Dominica in Nevis while Miss Dominica was in another pageant in Anguilla.
This is a response to “hmmn” – I never claimed it never happened – it happened because the queen obviously could not be in 2 places at once, not because the public felt the 1st runner-up should go. It may have happened at other times for that same reason, but it is unjust for you and the rest to just suddenly want the 1st runner-up to represent us. That has to be a policy decision and from then on all future 1st runner-ups would have the same opportunity. Some of you are just too bias – if the 1st runner-up had won, would you all be asking that question? Why now? Let’s give the queen our full support and stop this nonsense – she is representing Dominica now.

Obviously, when this becomes a policy or standard practice like it is in St Kitts, then the 1st runner-up will be able to represent us regionally in one show. But it can’t be done to our whims and fancies. Personally, I think it is something that the committee needs to consider going forward – possibly beginning 2012.

I am delighted to say that I had a front row seat to the contest last night and can attest to the fact that Miss Dominica did us all proud.
She did well in all her segments including her question andanswer, swimwear, Ambassadorial, evening wear and performing talent. She was poised, charming and delivered well but somehow being placed in the top four contestants eluded her. She was after all a strong contender for the top spot.
As a journalist of over 20 years experience, I wish to reassure all that she performed creditably and her lost should not be viewed as a disgrace.
I also had the opportunity to witness the other Dominican contestants including those who won the contest in the past and I dare say that Ms. Fagan performed equally well. I guess it just didn’t have to be.
Many of us who witnessed the show were left wondering what went wrong with the panel of judges. A former judge who hails from Barbados and had judged similar events throughout the Caribbean including past Miss Caribbean Culture Queen contests was left wondering why didn’t Miss Dominica place in the top. In her view Miss Dominica did very well.
All I will say is she did all us proud and all other Dominicans should embrace her and support her on her return.
It will be a learning experience for her but I will maintain, like many others in the crowd, that Miss Dominica had rightfuly earned a place in the top but … she was denied and the judges decision is final.
I wish Miss Dominica well and good luck in her next endeavour in Antigua.

I was talking in light of the fact that Marcella Larocque did DA extremely proud when she was queen. I have no idea she trains people. I just remember how outstanding a queen she was. I just wish we could go back to the days when we swept away the competitions in the Caribbean with queen material. I hope the young woman does the BEST in Antigua, it is NOT good for the psyche to lose all the time like that.
Well Prenancy Marcella isn’t the only queen that won many titles. Leandra and Maria walters were the latlest one to do soo..So Marcella is dated. Come up to date with the time. She does train people puss she train Ms.Lotto in 2003 when they cheated and place her girl and she was the chair of the committee a few years ago.
