Dominican citizens living in Toronto and elsewhere in the Diaspora will celebrate the country’s 35th year of Independence when they ‘play mas’ in the 2013 Scotiabank Caribbean Carnival Grand Parade, in Toronto on August 3.

They will be appearing in a guest band named “Dominica! A Creole Paradise.”

Revellers will take to the streets in a vibrant display of ‘Ole Mas’ wearing the island’s national dress the Wob Dwiyet and Jupe, along with traditional carnival costumes, the Sensay and Souswell Souwi, all reminiscent of the island’s first Carnival celebrations of the mid 1800’s.

Dominica! A Creole Paradise is being organized by the Commonwealth of Dominica Ontario Association (CDOA) with creative production and support from Black Chick Entertainment and Sabeniah Mingo of Know Your Culture, from New Jersey.

Discover Dominica Authority – the island’s official Tourism Office – is the official Sponsor.

According to CDOA President, Frances Delsol, the band is about more than just jumping up in the Parade

“It’s about celebrating the gift of a rich and diverse cultural heritage along with the strong values that has raised confident men and women who contribute to the societies and economies of the world, including Canada,” she said in a release.

She sees the band as an excellent opportunity to showcase Dominica on a world stage while symbolically extending an open invitation for everyone to come see and enjoy what the island has to offer.

The band will be on display on the Lakeshore, on August 3rd and revellers are enthusiastic to show off their cultural pride.

Dominica will officially celebrate its 35th Independence on November 3rd.
