Facebook page causes stir

A new Facebook page called “No!!,I’m not JAMAICAN OR HAITIAN!..there’s other caribbean islands you know” has been creating quite a stir among Caribbean nationals on the social networking site.

It is unclear when the page was launched but it has already attracted close to 10,500 ‘likes.’

In the information section of the page, the creators wrote, “No disrespect to Jamaica or Haiti but people have to know that they are not the only 2 islands in the Caribbean.”

The profile picture of the page displays a collage of maps of all the other Caribbean Islands.

But it appears as if the majority of the ‘likes’ are from Jamaicans who seems to have joined the page to defend their island. One wrote, “JAMAICANS EVER IMITATED BUT NEVER CAN BE DUPLICATED.” Another quipped, “Lol we ja’cans are the best we like the page to hate on it.”

Quite a few Dominicans have also joined the page.

    I am Dominican and proud.

While in the UK when asked where in the Caribbean I was from, I always made it clear that I was from Dominica NOT Dom Rep.. Most people knew where Dominica was. To those who did not know, I’d tell them. Most Dominicans in the UK are proud to say where they are from. There will always be a few who pretend and act like they are from some other so called big islands.

Not all Jamaicans call us smallies, and to those who do they should read the book Small Island by Andrea Levy, where she describes Jamaica as a small island.

When all is said and done, we cannot blame Jamaicans, Trinis or any other islanders for singing their islands praises and being proud of their islands. We as Dominicans should be doing the same. Afterall we have just as much to be proud of.

I live in NY and what annoys me is people who are from the islands themselves know Dominca but they pretend they don’t and ask u all these questions, sometimes i just roll my eyes at them. Alot of island people think that they are better than each other. Like my Trini friends, they are 100% confident that they are the best dancers and dressers with all the fake bling they carry around, are u freaking kidding me.. Whenever someone ask where i’m from i say i’m from Dominica, it’s an island close to antigua, st lucia etc, it’s one of the chain of islands, then i tell them it’s pretty tropical down there and they should visit bec it is fun and the people are friendly. I also tell them make sure that if they chose to go when it’s the festival or carnival they have the stamina to hang out all night. I don’t pretend i’m from any other island like i see alottttt of chicks be doing on FB. There is this girl from st joseph and u would swear she is jamaican bec all her slangs, words, dressing she is imitating the jamaican culture, but guess what those jamaicans will never pretend to be dominicans.. Why some poeple so “dotish” seriously. sometimes all i gotta do is smdh.

HAHA…. you know what…well if all this is creating a stir… best all of you dominicans who don’t wanna be called dominicans because of some little confusion with Dominican Republic say this, “I AM A DOM-NI-TCHEN!” Lmao..haha… well i guess that will stop the confusion too… lol haha.. best they formulate that as our alias!…. zor ni dayba.. its not hard to say I am from Dominica. Most of them that hear the accent knows is not Dominican Republic and if they don’t then you just simply say NOT D.R…. what’s so hard? stupes. I live in Ny and I come across a lot of people who think I am from D.R. because of complexion and hair texture, I simply say “nope” Dominica and they say, “ohhhhh DOMINI-KA!” lmao..

heehee…is just like the chinese always asking black person if they come from Africa or they already decide you come from there and then want to know which african country you come from! Like black people only live in Africa! this lack of knowledge and stereotyping can be found in many other parts of the world. but at the end of the day its still just another opportunity to educate that person!

Some things are worth trying but it’s going to be hard to change a mentality like that.

Right now I’m out of state and have to deal with a few Jamaicans, they know what they are and the let it be known to others! you know Small Island , Big Island Nonesense!! Yet It’s still not all of them.

If we all come together and work on it I am pretty sure we can as they say “put Dominica on the map” as if it wasn’t there along side all the othe Islands sinse nah-nay kanal.

LETS NOT BLAME THE JAMAICANS, THE MARKETING STRATEGY AND MARKETING CONCEPT OF THE JAMAICAN TOURISM BOARD IS WORLD CLASS. “WHEN YOU SAY JAMAICA” EVERYONE KNOWS! ONE CAN CLEARLY IDENTIFY THE JAMACIAN MARKETING BRAND AND PRODUCT TO REGGEA(MU…SIC),SPORTS,TOURISM AND THE PHRASES
“IRIE MAN,NO PROBLEM MON” HAS STALK TO ITS TARGET MARKET AND IS RECOGNIZABLE EVERY WHERE IN THE WORLD, AS JAMAICAN.

COMPARE THIS TO DOMINICA’S MARKETING STRATEGY AND MARKETING PLAN. OUR MARKETING STRATEGY HAS A COMPETITIVE DISADVANTAGE,IT’S SEASONAL. WE SUFFER FROM WHAT IS CALLED THE “PROVIDENCE PARADOX” AS RELATED TO OUR PRODUCT(DOMINICA). NOT ENOUGH IS DONE TO MARKET DOMINICA,WE ARE STILL CONFUSED FOR THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC.WE NEED TO LET THE WORLD KNOW WHERE DOMINICA IS AND WHAT BEAUTIFUL FAUNA AND FLORA (NATURE) WE ARE BLESSED WITH. GENERIC COMPETITORS LIKE JAMAICA IS OUT-MARKETING US INTERNATIONALLY.
LETS MARKET DOMINICA’S CORE COMPETENCIES INTERNATIONALLY,WE HAVE A SUSTAINABLE COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE WITH OUR NATURAL WONDERS.WE CAN SET THE BENCHMARK FOR NATURE TOURISM,BUT WE HAVE TO MARKET DOMINICA WORLDWIDE CONSISTANTLY,NOT JUST FOR CREOLE FESTIVAL SEASON,OR THE CARNIVAL SEASON ETC……..

WINNERS ON THE POPULAR TV GAME SHOWS SUCH AS THE PRICE IS RIGHT,JEOPARDY ETC WIN VACATION TO BARBADOS,ST.LUCIA ANTIGUA AND OTHER CARIBBEAN PLACES….. NEVER WILL YOU HEAR AN ALL EXPENSE PAID VACATION TO DOMINICA ON THE MAJOR TV NETWORKS. WHY DON’T THE TOURISM DIVISION USE THIS AS AN ADVERTISING MEDIUM TO ADVISE?????

We can ask what’s in an island? Then ask what’s in a person? Island or person? Note the difference. Dominican people make up Dominica.
The dispute of Dominica and Dominican Republic and Dominicans being asked if Dominica is D.R. has been going on for years in those countries as Canada, U.S. and Europe and appears that it will continue as long as there are some people who are not educated to know the difference.
Some of them do not know to ask “Which island are you from or originated from?”
When I inform them that I am from Dominica I have been asked is it Dominican Republic? I inform them that I am from Dominica, West Indies and not the Republic.
I have given up informing them that I am from Dominica unless those people know about Dominica or where Dominica is situated. I say that I am from the West Indies or from an island in the West Indies which is in the Caribbean.
The Caribbean, also opening a can of worms, as the saying goes. So here we go about the Carib settlers in Dominica, after the Arawaks…” :)
There are times I inform them that Dominica is situated near Antigua and St. Lucia and between two French islands, Martinique and Guadeloupe. Some of them have visited those islands.
I do give them a bit of history and how Dominica was once a French island and became an English speaking country, once a British colony.
A few of them have told me that they have visited Dominica and had an enjoyable time.
Those who never heard of Dominica or never visited it, I have informed them that it is called “Dominica” and not “Dominican Republic”. Then I go on to explain to them about Dominica being discovered on a Sunday and why it was named Dominica and by whom.
On many occasions there are those who will ask are you from Jamaica. I will inform you that I do not welcome it. However, I also inform them that “I am not a Jamaican.” Residing in Toronto, I do not think there are too many of us and from the other islands who are pleased about being asked if we are Jamaicans.
It is this consistent having to inform them that there are more islands in the Caribbean than Jamaica as I told one of my co-workers. I named every island in the West Indies to him and stated that they are a chain of islands from North to South. I also state you should take a trip or a cruise to the islands. This is the only way they can become educated about and acquainted with these islands.
The Canadian schools of all do not teach about the West Indies or West Indian history. If they are not doing that I do think that it is time they do so for there are also Canadian children of Dominican parentage.
One of the reasons is why we are asked if we are Jamaicans is because of the numerous crimes/murders that are committed primarily by Jamaicans and those of Jamaican parentage. OIf course there are many more Jamaicans than there are Dominicans and the other islands.
Through the years I have met some Jamaicans. I have not delved into their personal and family lifestyle.
I have retained a good Jamaican friend who is from a reputable, good family and who lives accordingly.
We must not be blamed if it upsets us when we are asked are you from Jamaica, Haiti or Dominican Republic for obvious reasons. Generally, Dominicans are law-abiding people. Residing in Toronto, I can vouch for that.
I am proud of my Dominican heritage; proud of the manner in which my parents nurtured me and the schools which I attended to high school. I am proud of my Catholic teachings, beliefs and practices which have molded me in whom I am today. I am proud of the friends whom I interact with, whatever island in the West Indies they originated from. I choose my friends wisely. All this, thanks be to God, my parents including all those whom I knew and interacted with, no exception neighbors when I resided in Dominica.
Let us be proud of our Dominica heritage. There is none to compare. I always say, let every islander speak for him/herself.
God bless Dominica. Let us make and keep Dominica a safe place to reside in and a country to emulate.
My words are insufficient to express my feelings of the Dominica I knew when I resided there and the Dominica I would like it to be.
Always proud to be a Dominican. My heart is overflowing with love for Dominica. I can’t wait to visit soon.
Remember the words of the song: “This land is my land – our land. God gave this land to me – to us…” So do you my fellow Dominicans wherever we may reside. Stand up for our beautiful island of beauty.
    God bless all!

One can give up his citizenship or have dual, but he can not give up his birth-right. Having said that, you are who you are, and should be proud of it. There’s nothing I hate like when someone in the US is quick to label me Jamaican, before he/she asks questions. I do forgive them because their knowledge is limited in geography. Dominicans are a unique people with one of the most beautiful accent in the Caribbean. I’m proud to be from the Sout Citi, bold and take no shit from anyone, but respect everyone’s point-of-view. What I know? I’m just the Lougawoo looking from de outside. (LOL)

People lets use this forum to discuss issues that are uplifting and that edifies. People read this site and they are not all necessarily Dominicans. So, lets start representing the island, sending a message that we have a beautiful island with beautiful people and beautiful minds. We are often confronted with the question in Europe, the US and other countries, are u from Haiti? are u Jamaican? It really has to do with the population of these islands and that’s why there are so much more of their people out there than ours. I live in the US and i know more Hatians and Jamaicans than Dominicans. Lets move on to better and bigger things like; where does our country go from where it is now? Are we better today than yesterday? What progressive improvements can we make individually and collectively? Are we being properly represented by our representatives? How can we take the necessary steps to raise our living standards? When are we going to be more investers friendly? Lets go back to the days of “all shall eat” and not the way it is right now ” some shall eat”. To DNO, I just want to extend my humble gratitude and appreciation for bringing us as Dominicans together where we can express our thoughts, opinions, and frustrations. Thanks.

Don’t beatt on the Haitians and the Jamaicans. They are proud of their nationality and their
flags. The Jamaican and Haitian population is bigger through out North America.Obviously
more people run into them.Theer are more businesses owned by Jamaicans and Haitians.
They are more visible and more aggressive. We shouldn’t grudge them. We should learn from
them. Instead, we should emulate them. Be proud to be Dominican !!.

I applaud that statement. I don’t want anyone to categorize me as being Jamaican nor Haitian. Don’t look like them, don’t act like them ( especially the ill-mannered, loud ones). They are loud and all over the place like flies. There is a huge contengency of Jamaicans and Haitians in the U.S which is why anyone who comes from the West Indies is mistaken for either Haitian or Jamaican and some of us are so dumb that we would rather say we J/can or H/tian than advertise our own countries. There are Dominicans whom I have met and inquired where they were from because of their accents . They told me they were Jamaicans or from the U.S . It is so nice to meet someone who is from your place of birth but some people think by them telling you where they are from will make you want to come to their homes or be in their business. I was not raised going to people’s homes in Dominica why would I want to go now? I love telling where I’m from and how beautiful my beloved island is. Well everyone is not the same.

do you know that there are manyyyyy jamaicans who can’t go back to jamaica, as a matter of fact they refuse to go back bec they are scared they get killed by there own people. When carnival or fest comes around we dominicans go back home with no problem as long as we can afford the trip but not because of fair but for jamaicans it’s different. some think that their shit don’t stinct and going back home is beneath them but if they say everyone who was not born in the US, go back home i want to see what they will do. Yeah there tourism industry is booming but there is as much poverty and crime. Not all work hard darlin, there are some lazy ones.. I think u need to take a walk one saturday during the summer and go on Jamaica Avenue in Queens and you will see how the young jamaican guys with their face bleached are just chilling on the block not doing shit but selling drugs and hustleing.. Any time someone make that mistake and ask if i’m from JA i am quick to say noooo thnaksssss and correct them.

True dat! I know first hand how Haitians helping each other so much. When one Haitian have to get green card, all haitians pulling and helping the one Haitian with affidavit of support, and all that they need, family or not. But not Dominicans, they are always competing with each other to see who can dress more (less Actually) who can buy house, and car in America first. When you go to a party they pull up wathcing each other gossiping who have who husband, who marry for papers, who buying at pay less, or at marshalls. Yes i agree with you, Dominicans do each other bad in their own country and abroad. Say what all you want about Jamaicans ad haitians they unite when the time is right, BUT Dominicans are constantly warring each other! I don;’t know what it is but they are grudgeful and, they just cannot be happy for each other’s sucess. Is always a bring down scene.

Should I tell them, “Go and study your geography!” After all, no one can claim to know everything about every thing and every where.

Commend them, even, for at least placing me territorially. Then the education begins. And what if they are faking it – not knowing the difference?

Still take the time to teach them. No offense!
