“A Tempest” blows into the Alliance Francaise this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
It’s the final play of the 2013 DOMFESTA season – where we see shipwrecked souls struggle in the grip of “Prospero” – the conniving Magician who controls the island they are flung up on.
Directed by Dominica’s own Alwin Bully, this version of Shakespeare’s classic tale was reinvented by Martinican Poet Laureate Aimé Césaire who gives it a distinct Caribbean twist, mirroring the colonial history of the islands and their struggle for freedom from European slavery and exploitation.
The Alliance Francaise de la Dominique and La Cour des Arts theatre group honor the 100th anniversary of Aimé Césaire with this English language production.
The show runs Friday through Sunday June 14-16, 2013 at 8pm at the Alliance Francaise on Elmshall Road.
Tickets are available at Alliance Francaise, Bulls Eye Pharmacy and at the door.
Show was very well done and attended…should they should have it again but in a bigger place. Congrats to the cast members, especially Prospero, Ariel and Caliban…Good job!
Hope the show is a success. Good luck to all the cast members and Dr Bully. Great work.
Every show in Dominica is the same thing – the slavery bull. one day we will rise above that. one day, tourists will be able to sit in those shows and the carnival shows and not feel like walking out as I have seen before. When we reach that stage, then we can think of expanding our audience and rising up to international levels. I don’t doubt that the acting will be good, but time to rise above the only one topic we know about. I have actually seen a show of a high standard maybe 20 years ago by now, but then we fell back with the crap. that musical with Pearl Christian, Edith bellot -Allen was tops. We should come up with more like that.
And you go to see and love all kinds of pirate and historical European-based movies and shows! what I hearing there.
I guess it’s more of Shakespeare’s bull.(just being sarcastic)… have you seen the play? If you have then give a constructive comment as to why it is so bad. If not go see the play and appreciate the effort put into it.or make some effort to create your own
Sorry that you fail to be entertained. But these themes you seem tired of are part of our island’s history. If you ‘better’ entertainment, you are free to leave.
Good work J…..Love, Dad
I wish I could attend Have a great show!
