First ever “Soca in the City” to form part of Mas Domnik 2017

Labadie promises a ‘party atmosphere’ at Soca in the City

An initiative of Mira Entertainment Company in Dominica and endorsed by the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC), ‘Soca In The City’ is set to bring a new addition to Mas Domnik 2017.

The initiative was announced at the first press conference for the carnival season held at the DFC’s office on Wednesday.

‘Soca In The City’ is carded to take place at the Board Walk Restaurant at Lalay Coco, between Loubiere and Castle Comfort and will be held every Thursday from 9:00 pm between the 12th of January and the 23rd of February.

This new venture, according to Managing Director of Mira Entertainment ‘Doctor’ Miguel Labadie, seeks “to help enhance Dominica’s carnival product.”

“For many years we have seen almost the same thing, the usual pageants, the great calypso event and the bouyon shows, although time by time we see new event, new products coming on stream. But with the growing popularity, the fast rising demand for Soca music these days, w felt the need to compliment what already is available as part of Dominica’s carnival celebrations and product. And here we have Soca In The City,” he said.

There will be features by local DJs including Dj Flip ‘Tha Boss’, Dj Matthew, Major Mystic, RS Digital and more.

Labadie said that the event will provide a “party atmosphere.”

“It will really provide that party atmosphere filled with positive energy with color, light, vibes and everybody can just come and fete, really party and have a good time,” he stated.

He also said that now is the best time to “come out of that box” in terms of the music that we enjoy.

“We will feature all the various sub-genres of Soca music from power Soca to groovy to the classy Soca music, Bouyon Soca music of course, EDM influenced Soca music, Afro Soca. So Soca In The City is the event to look forward to,” Labadie said.

He affirmed that the event will be a “big one for sure.”

I swear Dominicans are the most backward set of people on this earth today. Some of you in that country for too long take a trip and while you’re at it get a grip.

Socca was first heard in Dominica. Dominicans do the necessary research.

A fuss some Dominicans sickening. Always ready to pounce with negativity. Just showcasing your stupidity Instead of encouraging and coming to support. The island already struggling. doh talk about boring. every other island bubbling. but once somebody trying a ting them jalouzie always popping up and waiting to see it fail. The man is a knowledgeable positive young man trying to help out culture and development. Soca nights will be bumba! people might even come from other islands. Trinidad is so lively. fetes all the time. variety. but here Blah. so I welcome this new initiative. positive youth we can run this country…in all sectors. do your thing Dr. Miguel. u large!

Every one is free as to their choice of music, there is no point arguing about taste. It is as free market, except when a government agency steps in to promote a move like this. Do I see a sinister, and cynical attempt by govt. to undermine and trivialise our seasonal calypso in attempt to drown out criticism leveled at them and other figures of authority? It is not only Dominica and Trinidad that celebrate carnival at the same time but also Brazil, as well as France, part of the Netherlands and Germany and many other countries where such irreverent and ribald songs are part of this historical culture. Above all it are the lyrics of such renditions that matter and I hope we do not lose this safety valve. People Should not take themselves too serious all the time., or risk being lampooned at carnival time. After all, if they do not sing about you, you can not be that important!

It’s amazing that in this time when most countries, with the exception of Great Britain, view coming together as the best way to survive in this highly competitive world, a reality made possible as a result of globalization, we in this microscopic part of the world still hold separatists views.
We are small brother and sister nations in which there is not a truly distinct culture for individual nations. Rather aspects of our cultures overlap as they all have a more or less common origin. If we are to hold and maintain these positions, then dissolve Caricom for the efforts in building it are wasted.

    • January 12, 2017

My sentiments exactly!!! Plato you took my words and articulated them better than I ever could.

Did you patronize the Bouyon Monarch competition held a few years ago?
will you be going to the mascamp on and showdown camp on on Thursdays and fridays?

wrong name for branding period !!! it’s Dominica’s carnival season so it should definitely be called “BOUYON in the city”. no doubt soca music is gonna be played at the event because it’s part of our listening music during social gatherings throughout the year but from a branding perspective especially during our carnival season the naming is totally wrong.

I didn’t know news was only about politics and murder and accident. lol

btw for your information. NEWS: new information or a report about something that has happened recently (merriam-webster.com).

The news should have been: Dominica we will have calypso shows this year again. LMAO. That would be news right.

Why ” SOCA”? It appears that we have lost our love of culture. If it ain’t imported, it ain’t real/good. I am disappointed in our Festival Commission for the acceptance of this event as part of our carnival. We have a very rich heritage, yet it appears that certain folks are bent on destroying what we have. This event is like : our grapefruit being exported and we buying the imported canned juice. SAUVER CULTURE NOUS.

Do to enjoy something that did not originate in DA means we are destroying our culture? This is almost the same as saying one should not learn a different language because it will diminish our ability to speak English.

    • I can't beleive that
      January 12, 2017

Did the DFC replace the calypso show or Masscamp by this event? Not that I know of. Calypso is originating from Trinidad as far I remember. But because of the pace and because it was used to transmit social message and anti government message it was embraced more rapidly in most caribbean islands. Recently we had Soca Monarch as part of the carnival program. Because those soca songs were composed and played by Dominicans it was all good. As far as I know soca is a faster calypso music and should be part of our caribbean heritage and part of our culture. I really can’t believe that people making a big deal about that event. I know how Mr. Labadie is always promoting our Dominican culture and I don’t think calling his event Soca in the City was to damage or remove anything from Dominica culture. You need ambiance during carnival time. People will go to their calypso shows, people will go to their bouyon parties and people will go to their soca parties. All for the good of our Carnival.

Miguel, they tell me you are good but if you are that good why do you need government support in this enterprise? don’t you expect to be successful, with this and make a profit on your own?

      • Me
        January 12, 2017

It seems to me that he is SO good that Government, through DFC, endorsed his event because they saw the economic potential. What have you done lately that warranted such support??? Let me guess…NOTHING. So zip it!
