I want to “put Dominica on the map” – Leslassa

With a hopeful spirit and 3 regional titles under her belt, reigning Miss Dominica Leslassa Armour-Shillingford is keeping her fingers crossed hoping for the opportunity to participate in the 2013 Miss World Pageant.

Armour-Shillingford was crowned Miss Caribbean Culture on August 5th, a pageant which she has described as the most competitive, yet the one she enjoyed the most.

“It was a very good competition although it was a bit rushed since it was right after the Miss Jaycee’s pageant and we were only able to arrive two days before the competition and able to put in only one rehearsal the night before. Although the girls who came out were amazing, it was such a competitive competition that I’m very proud that I won because the evening wears were amazing, the talents were mind blowing. So, I’m just very proud that I won that competition.”

Armour-Shillingford walked away with the Miss Caribbean Culture title just 2 days after being crowned Miss Jaycees. She added that she did not find any of the rounds challenging since she was properly prepared for all the rounds. “However, there was a technical issue for the talent round and so I was on stage waiting for quite some time,” she pointed out.

She indicated that the swimwear round and interview round were the ones which she enjoyed the most.

She copped the award for best interview at the Miss Caribbean Culture pageant.

Although Miss Caribbean Culture is her final regional pageant she says that she is still working on securing a spot at the Miss World pageant.

“The Miss Caribbean Culture pageant was my final regional pageant, I am still working on trying to see if I can get into the Miss World pageant this year but I am not sure how that is going. The experience would be amazing. At this pageant I would get a chance to compete with other girls from all over the world and gain an opportunity to put Dominica on the map. It would provide the ideal opportunity for me to assist in bringing visitors to the country.”

She stated that the pageant will be happening in September and the Dominica Festivals Committee is currently working hard at trying to secure a spot for her.

Armour-Shillingford participated in four regional pageants out of which she won three.

Oh mY Goodness GRELL…..you all can really make STUPID comments….a lot of the ladies who takes part in Miss World has just taken part in a couple pageants…its not that the others could not go, but DFC always talk that they have no money, so if some persons can help Leslassa to go, well that would be fantastic..IT IS TIME FOR DA TO TAKE PART IN MISS WORLD AND UNIVERSE..Miss Lawrence took part in the Miss Caribe pageant in Venezuela, there were about 39 ladies and she placed 9th….and Miss Lartique took part in Miss universe…

Leslassa won 3 regional right but the same crown she is wearing over and over.

    Haiti: Ketsia LIOUDY
    Jamaica: Gina HARGITAY
    Martinique: Julie LEBRASSEUR

OMG!! i swear DNO should have a screening process for ignorance when it comes to posting comments…Jealousy is a disease and some of you guys on here needs immediate medical attention for it…what map Dominica on?? the itty bitty dot you can hardly see?? and when ppl as where are you from you have to explain to them its an island in the caribbean…and they will still ask where is it next too and you still have to try and say ST.Lucia or whatever ..most times i say Jamaica cuz thats all they know and i want to be left alone?? she is right in her statement..and other queens did not get to miss world because we are 2013 and as you can see her team is pushing via social media and all sorts of avenues to get her there..she has dedicated and resourceful people on her team..aint nothing wrong with that..now as for allu ignorance and negativity ?? keep that and lets support her…bye man..just upset my morning ….

Two of the youth group from St Marten gave a feed back of thier trip to Brazil to visit the Pope and one thing they said that shocked me was that the Brazillian they encountered do not know about St. Martetn,; according to them the closest the Braillians know about the Caribbean is Cannel Bay. So they had to settle for that. Imagine St. Marten a well known tourist destination is unkown to some people , far more Dominica. Why are these critics bashing the Queen for trying her best to make us known? She showed us off as an intelligent and talented pezople. Thanks Lesslassa for making us proud. Good luck in the Miss World Pageant.

My comments not being popular does not mean its not valid. Why do you have a hide a low rating comment. Sometimes in the midst of the blind it takes one great man to open their eyes and let them see. How is what I am saying wrong.

Leslassa won 3 regional crowns. Must I remind you that the Caribbean standards in comparison to the rest of the world are not that great in anything except JA. Do we really need to waste our money on Miss World? Admittedly I still have confidence in Leslassa because she is far far more intelligent than the young queens we have had in at least 8 or 9 years and Miss world is more about beauty intelligence poise and class (which she has); not how much hips you have and how much you can whine and pose when you walk.

However if she is sent it is so wrong to expect every one that wins Miss Dominica to feel its their right too. I am sorry it is not one rule for goose and another for gander. You people are too biased. In recent times the only people that have been in the running for these international shows are rednecks or whatever you call them. I don’t think they are better than black people. That out of style long time. It this a coincidence? Past queens must be stewing inside and they are afraid to talk because they did’t win many crowns.

    • Lost
      August 7, 2013

Kinda sounds negative but point taken. Getting Leslassa to Miss World is a great idea… and one can see how future queens might make demands and ask why they are not ‘deserving’ to be sent especially if the funding is from DFC or the like. Perhaps standards should be set like winning at least 3 regional crowns or covering certain % of costs?
      Not an expert, just saying.

The cost of sending a participant to the International shows doean’t est only on Gov’t. Most of the burden is on the contestants family & acquaintances. I see nothing wrong in Leslassa trying. If the black queens have money let them go ahead. Please don’t put Gov’t in that. Some of you all just like to put debah where there should be none. I don’t think some of all you have blood in all you veins, only venom & acid. Disgruntled, sick human beings.

To those who want to compare queens, remember that every years, the number of pageants in the region fluctuates. Back then, we also had PJD2 and Miss OECS. Also, when Marrah Walter was our queen, she took part in 5 regional pageants and won 3.

This is part of her final speech:
“My accomplishments to date are so much more than I could have envisioned. As soon as my journey as Miss Dominica 2010 started I headed out to my first pageant where I captured the coveted title of Miss Caribbean World 2010 in Tortola, then unto Miss Carival 2010 in St. Vincent and the Grenadines where I placed 2nd runner up with three awards, Miss Caribbean Culture 2010 in Nevis where I copped the award for best evening wear, Antigua where I emerged the 2010 Miss Jaycees Caribbean Queen with two awards and Miss Caraibes Hibiscus 2010/2011 where I placed 2nd runner up out of 20 contestants. I also had the pleasure of being named Personality of the year 2010 by insideposse.com thank you!” (Marah Walter, 2011)

Leandra Lander won 3 regional Pageants. The record for the most regional pageants won is held by Marcella Larocque. She won 4 regional crowns. Marcia Baptiste and Nakita Bruno both won 2 regional pageants.

First of all Conggratulations to Leslassa Armour-Shillingford and her devoted team. Just asking: “Why wasn’t Nadira Lando ever considered for Miss World or was she and we never read about it?” One would have thought, with all the talent she displayed, she would have been considered in representing Dominica as the first Queen in the Miss World competition after 37 years of Dominica’s lapse representation. And why were the others never considered? Is it a matter of money talks or status and surname plays the game? Just asking.

You should be proud of her and for saying that. She is surely not one who will sit back and allow the world and time to pass by and then say, what happened. She is an ambitious person who means well for her beloved country, Dominica and its nationals. Applaud her for it.

Dominica is full of talent, Lessalassa is the tip of the iceberg, we have so much more to show that is why Lesslassa has to go for Ms World to show the world that Dominica can provide something extrordinary

Congratulation on your achievements and I wish you the best as you move forward. You can bring some more recorgnition to Dominica tourism wise, but we are well placed on the map already.

    • Justice and Truth
      August 6, 2013

Geographically, it is already on the map. However, there are many people worldwide who have not yet heard of Dominica. Some of them in Canada ask us if we are from Jamaica. If we say we are Dominicans, they ask if it is Dominican Republic. We have much explaining to do to educate them about Dominica and where it is situated. This obviously also occurs in the US and Europe. Furthermore, there are also some Jamaicans and Trinidadians who never heard of Dominica. For these two countries, lack of education/attendance at elementary school where we learn the basics has much to do with it.

Mis Dominica 2013 is just amasing, great and talented . Which you would get a chance on the world Beauty stage . Would wlike to know if she have broken the records as Miss Dominica to scope most crown?

    • dominican beauty
      August 6, 2013

Just so u know many “queens” before her won more crowns that she did. she is an amazing talent yes! but lets not get it twisted…..remember Diane Francis in the 80s no less won a few more than 3 crowns…the young lady from convent won every crown she went for….

congrats to her but lets not blow it out of proportion.!!!!! it would be nice for her to compete on a world level…a few dominican girls in the past declined the opportunity !

      • hmm
        August 6, 2013

Which Young lady from convent that won every crown she went for there?
        smh!

Marrah Won 3 and Miss Dominica – 4
Leandra won 3 and Miss Dominica – 4
Nakita won 3 and Miss Dominica – 4
Marcia won 2 and Miss Dca
Nadira won 2 and Miss Dca
Leslassa won 3 and Miss Dca – 4
There are others, but the person is just asking. SMH! Some of all you too fast to bite and jump at people with all you tone of writing! .. I say CONGRATULATIONS and A SPLENDID JOB DONE with Leslassa since she have kept the baton a blaze!!! Looking forward to the future winners

      • The G
        August 7, 2013

Queens before might have won more because there were more pageants in the region back then. There were also the PJD2 pageant which ended in 2008 and the Miss OECS pageant. Last year, Nadira took part in 3 and won 2 cause she didn’t take part in the Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant. I am sure if the PJD2 and Miss OECS pageants were still around then these queens would have won more crowns. Furtheremore, back then it was about 8 girls that were taking part in the regional pagents. Today, our girls are winning amongst as many as 15 girls. Big up to our great queens of the past, but we have to give full props to Lesslsassa and others.

      • Anonymous
        August 7, 2013

I agree with your comment. Even in more recent times Leandra Lander won 3 or 4 regional titles in a row. We should give this queen all that she deserves but we should not discount or forget all that her predecessors achieved.

Dominican Beauty, lets not forget Marsella Larouqe, she did her best in all over and got more than 3 crowns.. I think this is the lady you are referring to when you say the girl from convent..Marsella Larouqe

      August 6, 2013

Afraid she didn’t! Marah Walters the from Paix Bouche I believe won all four.

      Leandra I believe won three,

Perhaps the Dominica Festivals Committee should publish the league tables of how pageants each “Miss Dominica” won.

Best wishes with getting to one of the international pageants.

I;m sure I read somewhere that countries must have a local franchise of “Miss Universe” in order to become eligible to participate. Not sure whether that’s a fact or not.

      • Yup
        August 6, 2013

Leandra placed in Miss Caribbean World.. she didn’t win. Same as Miss Shillingford. I wish her good luck too.. I think they really do need a local franchise to get into Miss Universe.

Could you come up with a little more originality in your slogan. Something uplifting and/or motivational, by which you will be remembered; and avoid “put Dominica on the map”. Dominica has been and will continue to be on the map.

Even if by “put Dominica on the map” you mean advertise Dominica on a world stage, unless you are a politician, avoid saying what you are going to do, just do it.

  67. National Interest
    August 6, 2013

Let’s Hope that DFC can make this happen.. On second thoughts, AND I AM DEAD SERIOUS, I think we as Dominicans should talk to Matt of the Hot Seat to see what we can do to ensure that this happens for our country. This is wonderful opportunity and we ought not to waste it. This young lady is 4 out of 5 (Include the local Queen Show), in competition…. I think we should try to ensure that she gets in…. (I said Matt because, in MY opinion, he and his talk show seems to be one of the more abled venues through which important national issues get max attention and more importantly, positive reactions for the general public)….. We can do this ppl…

    • Really!
      August 6, 2013

Congratulations. We are very proud. This is positive for Dominica, so please do not come up with your Matt on Q. She has done very well without that scandalous talk show and she will continuity to do better with the positive people she has around her. Don’t try to bring her down with your nonsense Matt of your hot seat. To Carla, family and friends, you are doing a Great job with this beautiful Queen.

Dno, Not wanting to be critical but Miss Shillingford hopes of getting into the Miss World Pagent is commendable and i do honestly wish the best for her, but i also have one concern and that is am not sure if the level of competition that we have in Dominica and the organizational skills of those persons who are organizing these queen show competitions are up to par with what the rest of her competitors are involved in, in their respective countries, these world pagent competitors are involved in advertising on a regular basis on television, making appreances at various events and promotions for popular products, are we ready in Dominica for a Miss world pagent appreance?? I say no not with those eight hour a day organizers working in the public service and the other departments concern. Let all ideas contend my friends in this debate

Some right from our shores, had publicly stated President Obama would not make it past the Primary and that the World wasn’t ready for a Black President. They have been proven wrong. You see, most change came about by the action of one individual. Do not forget Rosa Parks my dear. Leslassa can certainly make history. I have full confidence in the young lady. Keep your FOCUS in check. The BEST ANSWER during ANY INTERVIEW CAPTURES THE WIN IN EVERY COMPETITION.

If you should be accepted in the Miss World Pageant, which I have not doubt you could, DO NOT LOSE YOUR CONCENTRATION as far as beauty, what you or others wear, or anything to DISTRACT you. Your MAIN FOCUS should be on the QUESTION and ANSWER, and DO NOT BE OVERLY CONFIDENT.
