Improvement in calypsos expected ahead of February finals

An official of the Dominica Calypso Association is promising an improvement in the quality and content of calypsos closer to the calypso finals on February 13, 2010.

“We had to jump start the calypsos because we had elections and that put a damper in the initial stages; but I think when the semi final takes place, calypso will catapult itself to a new level,” Public Relations Officer of the Dominica Calypso Association Ian Jackson said.

According to Jackson, the 2009 election campaign also interfered with the lyrical content of the 2010 calypsos.

“Some persons had to go back and re-write their lyrics because most persons wrote not thinking that elections would have taken place. Even some of the songs that you are hearing now you can still see some instances and innuendos of that,” he revealed.

I do agree that Dice is a good calypsonian. Pat is also a great writer. Nothing can refute those two facts. But honestly, over the years many good calypsonians have come and gone. Lord Tokyo is just an example of a calypsonian who has come and gone. He has left the arena with some great hits like “Pumping Man” and “Tennis Shoe Scandal”. When he left calypso was still what it was. The art continued and developed. So I’m saying Dice in or out, Pat in or out calypso will still develop. Calypso came from the slaves. I don’t think the slaves thought at that time that it would even become a competition. If slaves were to return today, they would be marveled. So stop making calypso about people and specific writers. Let’s see the bigger picture and move on with life.

@Steve…I find you well informed pappa ( sarcastically speaking).

How can you say there are only 2 songs that sound like competition material? Man all of a sudden everybody in D/ca is an expert on calypso. It’s people like you who are not open minded enough to listen to “all” the songs before you cast judgment that is actually trying to kill calypso. Are you a musician (one who can actually read a score sheet not only play a song by air)? Are you on a level to grade a GCE/CXC English paper with openness and fairness? Are you really in tune with what is going on in society today? I mean we all have our opinions. That is why there is a panel of judges. Each with his own personal taste and preference. Each growing up in the same culture but with varied circumstance in life forming his views and tastes in life. When all is combined then we see what is happening.

The same goes for the writers. Would you like to live in a world where only one person decides who goes to school or not. Think of it as different writers expressing themselves through songs they write. Yes Pat is good…probably the best that has written a good percentage of songs in our modern time of calypso but don’t bring down the others in the process. I certainly enjoyed the current King performing last year to take “his” crown.

Time for us to enjoy what we have…the gift of music and stop crying down one another. If you disagree, then make a song and give to someone to sing, or sing it yourself next year, or better yet put yourself on the line by volunteering to judge calypso (please let’s know what are your credentials 1st).

For years Pat has been writing Calypso and thegreat Michael Jordan of Calypso (DICE) took a back seat in solidarity with his writer. The organisers said Calypso is bigger than Pat and Dice. To that i agree but we must admit without this two, calypso and the entire competition is empty. Dominicans love their calypso and the show is on the calender and its something to do. This year calypso is of great disapointment. Theonly 2 songs that sounds like competition material is written by Pat. I hope dice and hunter releases a single to spice up the road jump up.
