On December 17, the 5th edition of the Waraka Séwinal Festival held in the community of Atkinson.
Séwinal is derived from the French word serenade. It is a Christmas tradition in which a band of musicians and singers known as Bann Séwinal go from house to house during the weeks in the lead up to Christmas and on Christmas Eve, playing and singing traditional Christmas songs and carols.
While the Séwinal tradition has been in decline over the years, it has remained fairly strong in Atkinson.
The festival was organized by the Waraka Séwinal Festival Committee and the Atkinson/Antrizle Village Council. A number of people were recognized for their contribution in keeping the Séwinal tradition alive.
See photos below.
Great effort by Atkinson villagers. I which such could be organized in other communities.
Congratulations! Job well done
