Jacintha Fagan has won the 2011 Miss Dominica Pageant competition.

(SEE PHOTOS BELOW STORY)

The first runner-up award went to Earlene Labassiere and the second runner-up award went to Roselia Bazil.

Fagan, sponsored by the National Cooperative Credit Union, is a 23-year-old resident of Checkhall.

“I feel very elated, very relieved,” Fagan told DBS radio following her victory.

Fagan described her preparation for the show as a “long journey” laced with “hard work and sleepless nights”.

She said nothing comes easy and she was determined to “come all out”.

Fagan plans to focus on her platform of children and health during her reign “to ensure that our children get the best health possible…”

Fagan is currently a lab assistant at Dominica Brewery and Beverages Ltd. She is a graduate of Dominica State College and Convent High School.

The show, spearheaded by the Dominica Festivals Committee and organized by the Queen Show Committee, was held at Festival City in Pottersville, Roseau.

Boohoo who think they better than the judges .. you guys suck !!! I Believe that the show was judged well and that the only reason people thought they cheat is that THE COMPETION WAS TIGHT!

I think the show was judge well myself..being a judge of this year show, contestant number 7 could have won the crown but what throw her off was question and answer. But Ms. Jacintha did a great job. The first contestant was also in the running but again too there were only three spots

    Congrats Jacinta-

ANYBODY who saw cellulite where Earlene is concerned needed glasses. She was the best toned, muscle for so -with the flattest stomach- certainly endorsed by the radio announcers on DBS.

How could Michelle ever be placed when she came LAST in swimwear, ONE BEFORE THE LAST in costume and ONE BEFORE THE LAST in evening wear? -that big ill-fitting dress….. Best talent my foot- She went very flat and off-key during the song-watch Marpin or SAT when they play the show and check it

you seem to know a lot, maybe you were one of the judges who were keen on scoring her low points before even seeing what she could do, because all you had your favourite already.

so wat if she was of key at some point her talent was still the best out of all them….her presentation was was perfect and no other contestant could of beaten her presentation, the song she sang was perfect an fit her talent and the atmosphere she was trying to give of…AND SHE HAD A REAL TALENT!!!!! which is playing the violin..that is a real talent and she did a great job and she sang really well….that was one of the best talents i have even seen in a pageant held in a D/c..she deserved best talent and no one else on that stage could of gotten best talent.

      March 8, 2011

I have to agree with you. Earlene Labassiere was the best toned there and her swimwear was the best fit, even her evening wear was the best fitted. I have to also agree with you as someone in music myself, Michelle did go flat in her singing and her violin playing was very safe, no special challenge in her technique and no challenging cords. People in Dominica must not be fooled by a musical instrument, they must know about music and the skill and technique involved in playing. I think the best talent should have gone to either Earlene who sang beautifully, she had skill and the vibrato in her voice is a technique that is developed by singers years after training, I was surprised at her technique and voice control, and even word endings were very good she was excellent. Again someone would have to be in music to understand and appreciate what she did or even Jacintha sang beautifully. Many people also say that Michelle should place I have to disagree because her swimwear round was horrible, her evening wear round was horrible the dress was not fitted well at all and even her costume round she did not carry the costume well. As it relates to the question and answer Michelle did deserve this award, I think the other contestants were very nervous and as a result did not take their time to answer. This does not mean that the girls could not answer it just means that they were nervous.

I think the show was well judged. Congratulations to all the young ladies.

Fagan was never my choice or even a contender for me on the night but I still say congratulations as we all need to agree that the judges decision is final!!! As an avid pageant fanatic, I advise you:

    1) tone up- ur body did not look well in that swimsuit
    2) listen to the news- u need to keep abreast with current events so that u are capable of answering questions at the regional pageants
    3) get a better dress maker- let the designer or designers look at current fashion trends, urs was passively acceptable but still on the horrible side

These comments are to build u up, not break u down. U have big shoes to fill if u are to represent us as well as Marcia, Marah, Leandra and Nakita.

    Best of luck….I’ll be watching!!!

Michelle Did terribly in the other rounds! Her dress was not pleasant to look at! She said on the radio right after she got off the stage that “the color was her fav color and SHE got to choose her dress” Her custome was “blah” . Playing an insturment made her get best talent. And all the girls answered so silly… she’s the only one who didn’t sound “silly”.

Jacinta was GOOD … all rounds.

Ms. Dominica Pagent is a setting stage for the REGIONAL pagents. Lets wish Ms. Fagan luck and enough of the negativity.

As for MS> LABASSIERE!! stupes………..The swim you were swiming on the stage in your Swimsuit must have impressed the judges…..but not me. YOu didn’t deserve it. Nuff Said! Your Sponsor put in alot of money so they had to give you a place! You took Michelle’s place…….

The Queen show was substandard this year. What is going on? Are we becoming a superficial nation? How can a Dominican not know about feeder roads and social security? Earlene boasts of being an engineer and she could not spill out the advantages of geothermal energy. Chuh! And Ruth Augustine is either exceptionally naive or brave to tackle Frank Sinatra’s classic, I did it my way. If these women represent Dominica then prayers are in order. We as a nation need to read and seek information. I think the debacle that was last night speaks to the Dominican tendancy to talk without researching. It’s like a cancer. And I agree that consistency wins the show but the rounds are not equally weighted. As far as I know, the talent and answer rounds are given more weight than the other rounds. So, how fi Michelle not to place? Am I to believe that she was so appalling in the other rounds? Also, isn’t tone important in the swimwear? How Earlene win swimwear with all those cellulite? How Earlene place? Colour still counts in Dominica? I believe that the committee needs to focus on the question round as the winner has to be an ambassador. The world is not in love with looks anymore but with intellegence. The reign of the dolls is over.

Is true, colour constantly plays a role in our queen show. I don’t know why they doe just leave the show for shabine.. the dark skinned girls who win always have to work 10 times as hard as the light skinned girls to wear the crown. One day we will get past slavery “massa” mentality.

      just to be clear,

every round carry equal points. looong ago in our time, talent and in terview were scored higher, not anymore. there are pros and cons to this i guess.

my belief is, a public figure/ ambassador, needs to deliver in speech, and be confident and have great self expression, versitility and tact! Talent and interview segments shows the proof in the pudding.

Earlene was too eager! i could hear her thought process, but she failed to articulate! she was my favourite!

i would encourage her to do it again!

      congratulations to Jacinta!!!!

Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t one need to have attended UNIVERSITY and obtained a degree to be called an engineer? Since when does DSC give out engineering degrees? And if Earlene is already an engineer why was she heard saying that the only reason she was entering the competition was in hopes of winning the scholarship to go study? …..Where do they get these young ladies from?

Miss Columbo, I listened to DBS myself and their criticizen was unbecoming. I watch the show online and it was not anything like the criticizens this people gave on the radio, and this is sad. And for your information Mitchel did an excellent job with the question on Haiti. Again it had to be her opinion on such a question. You say that the girls are not intelligent, I wonder how intelligent are you. Ask yourself would you be able to do what they did last night. The more you all can’t do anything is the more you all criticize. Stop it and learn to support people. All the ladies are educated. In case you don’t know, which from your comment tells me, nervousness, which is something that happens to nomal human beings can cause you to stay still at a certain moment. Get real, be an older example, stop criticizing and play a positive role. All you all do is to repeat the foolishness you hear from other people and cannot make a positive analysm.

CONGRATULATION TO MS. DOMINICA 2011, HOWEVER I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH THE FIRST RUNNER-UP POSITON. EARLYN DOES NOT DESERVE IT. MICHELLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRST RUNNER-UP. EARLYN WAS NOT LOOKING TONED IN THE SWIMSUIT. SHE DID NOT SING HER TALENT SONG PROPERLY. SHE WALKED CLUMSILY IN HER EVENING WEAR AND SWIMSUIT. SHE COULD NOT HANDLE HER COSTUME. INFACT TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, EARLYN DID NOT HAVE TO PLACE- PERIOD. ROSILLIA WAS IMPRESSIVE. IF AM NOT MISTAKEN I THINK SHE IS THE FIRST MS. I think you are very blind. Earlene deserves her first runner up position Michelle deserves no position at all. Her stomach was bulging and the swimwear fit was horrible unlike earlene when she walked you saw muscle tone I wonder if you know about muscle tone secondly Michelle’s costume was not carried well at all she was fighting with it unlike Earlene who handled herself very well in costume. As for the vening wear round, Earlene was not rough she was graceful and her talent, as someone who sings myself, she delivered very well and she has a unique voice, the vibrato she did with her voice is something that even the best singers learn over many years. Michel on the other hand went flat in her singing and her word endings were horrible; she got best talent in my opinion because of the violin being unbiased the best talent should have gone to Earlene or the queen herself, these two young ladies sang beautifully. We must learn to be objective and if we are not sure of something ask a question instead of placing negative comments.

You are so right. A Competition can only have one winner and you enter it with that knowledge, confident at the same time that that winner will be you. If it turns out to be someone else you should have the grace to offer your congratulations and the winner to say:”thank you for affording me the opportunity to win” ,because you can not be number one without competition. The competitors are as indispensable as the winner. If you think this unfair, don’t take part in the first place! Meanwhile, let’s enjoy the event for the lighthearted grace and beauty, represented by some talented young ladies, who do us all proud.

  26. COLUMBO
    March 5, 2011

It is impossible to please everyone and no matter who was crowned last night, there will be some disappointments. I was not at the show. I listened via DBS. My disappointment however was in the talent round and most of all in the question and answer segment. I heard some things which people called singing and it was horrible. I mean, if you are not a singer who is used to handling the pressures of singing to a huge crowd, don’t try it at a queen show! You are going to be so nervous already, you are just compounding the problem. That however, was miniscule compared to the utter rubbish during the question and answer segment. I have had the experience of being with a queen contestant and I know they are given the topics before hand. They are even given examples of how to answer the questions. They are also advised not to cram an answer as they are not sure which question they will get. But, does anyone need coaching to answer a question on Haiti or on manufacturing? Aren’t these high school and college graduates? It shows their level of intelligence in current events! No one reads newspapers or even listen to the news. Facebook, yes!! DBS news, no!!! Well, it showed last night.

My advice to queen show committee is to begin training these individuals earlier. Give them more time to come up with something good. October to March is not enough time. When our girls take part in regional or international pageants, they will ask questions on current events. Make us proud. Jacintha, now you have been afforded to opportunity to represent Dominica. I would strongly advise you to get current on issues affecting the world right now so that if you are asked about the middle east you can definitely answer with confidence.

you are so right, and how many of us can answer these ridiculous questions under pressure, I am very well educated myself with my mastere Degree and would never be able to answer these questions on feeder roads, and geothermal energy. Why do we give the contestants all these ridiculous questions and in the regional pageants it’s so much simpler. We must reexamine these. Last year’s questions were much better.

Congratulations to Jacintha and Earlene both of you deserve your positions.

    • My comment
      March 9, 2011

October to March is clearly not enough time to prepare, agreed! However, very few young people follow news items – locally and internationally to be well versed on various issues; and they do not read that kind of stuff from young so that listening to and understanding such becomes a no-brainer. So with having to prepare physically, there is no time and really it is not the time to try to learn and read up on other issues. Basic questions about feeder roads and social security should not be difficult to answer even if the girl’s were a bit nervous. Be informed, read up on issues and news items from an early age and you will see the results in your speech and intelligence!

    March 5, 2011

Firstly let me Say congratulations to you Jacintha. A job well done. You deserved that crown and this is the only positive thing that I can say about that show last night. I was stunned last night that this is the best that we can do. The costumes were acceptable but I have seen better in the last years. During the talent round my ears were assulted and to place the icing on the cake the question and answer round was just torment. Why is that? I believe that the committee needs not only to re-evaluated the selection process but to also have the girls expose to more pressured environments prior to the show. We are all concerned about whether the judges were right or not and have over looked the bigger picture: these girls were selected. That means that they were the best out of the lot. Is that it? Do we no longer have individuals who know what their talents are. At this stage in life someone should know whether they can sing or not. But the show last night can be a demonstration of the quality of education that our students are receiving in schools. Do we encourage our students to explore, find and develop their talents at a young age? Do we discuss social and political topics at the home or are we too busy, doing other things than trying to mould the minds of our kids.
Last night was a reflection I believe of brain drain that has begun in our society. Our girls could not answer basic questions. I know being on stage is difficult but this is something that one should realise before going on stage.
We need to do better and we can do better. I was totally embrassed to be a Dominican woman last night. We have to step up the standard of this show. From the decoration of the stage to performance of the girls was a total disappointment. Where is the motivation for the private sector to sponsor next years contestants? And what image are we sending to the foreigners who watched and will watch this show? This is a reflection on Dominican Women.

Girls I know that most of you will read this. You did your best with the abilities that you have and I know that each and everyone of you worked hard. Sometimes we the public are not previleage to the pressures that you are under and maybe your dresses and talents were not selected by you but for you. This criticism is my opinion and meant also as food for thought.

DNO, the young woman said I feel so ELATED or something to that effect when she won not “I feel amazing”

And to those biased or uninformed or both individuals who actually think Jacintha didn’t deserve it. Don’t be irresponsible ask a few objective experienced judges and let them explain to you how the judging and scoring works. You may not agree but if your open and honest you will understand why MIchelle can win talent and best question and still not place.

In my view her package for her talent was somewhat innovative but she was offkey for a huge part of the song her violin was not tuned and she changed the key of the song and then went off again!!

How can you sing offkey and still win best talent especially when Jacintha sang beautifully and never went off key! Although I wonder if Jacintha lost points for the length of her presentation.

I think Jacintha should have won best talent except if she did go over her time

Michelle is intelligent and possesses great potential i truly hope she grows because she has much more to offer but she simply did not do well enough to win.

It is obvious that consistency got the winner the crown, YES people it is possible mathematically. But here are my issues with the show:

    1. Why is that the person who got best Talent and Miss Intelligence did not place?

    2. The questions were extremely simple/easy this year. How is it that college educated students cannot answer simple questions. I know education is not all BUT the way the students academic achievements are articulated during the show, I really expected them to deliver. Not even the general questions that pertained to them they could answer.

    3. Didn’t the girls had a fitting for their dresses? How is it that some of the dresses were too big for the girls? And the designers, can they please keep up with the fashion trends and materials they are using. The first contestant was a curtain and drape gone terribly wrong. The yellow dress showed off the wrong curves…..

    4. Talent Talent Talent – why is it that so many of the girls sang and cannot sing? WHY. There are so many options, skits, dance, steel pan etc. Why forced them to develop a talent that you need some of natural tendencies and sufficient practice to develop? Is there a committee that observe each individual’s talent during preparation and give constructive advise. For example, “you do not have the vocals to pull through so why not try a song with a lower pitch or incorporate less singing or not sing at all” That seems fair to me….

    HOW CAN WE IMPROVE:
    1. Begin the application process earlier and maybe incorporate some type of audition to result in effective selection of top talent. Put them before a panel, ask each a question on the national level, inquire about their talents and have them perform on the spot, have them choose a platform as part of the application process and make a presentation before the panel etc.

    2. Once the girls are selected put them through some type of mandatory development program that they can do together. Public speaking course, Mock interviews conducted by top professionals on the island (a good way to get citizens involved), a networking challenge, have a coach walk them through modeling techniques etc. We don’t have to re-invent the wheel, look at pageantry nationally and internationally, reach out to organizers of those shows and do an informational interview. You all will be surprised that people are willing to give advise.

    3. If the public is seeing an investment in the success of contestants we would see an increase in application and the committee would have a larger pool to select from.

    We can do this.

Congrats again to you Ms. Dominica 2011! I do not normally comment on public forums, but I will admit that I have alot of experience in pageantry. I was not physically present at the show but did have access to live streaming where I viewed and listened to all the performances. I have also won and judged competitions in the past; I did the same last evening from abroad and was in agreement with the results. You did deserve your crown and won as a result of your consistency in the rounds. You possess a great talent and portrayed great confidence and poise. I wish you much success and in your future endeavors! Keep your head up! Cheers!

      Jascintha,

While I was not impressed with the show overal, you won and I congratulate you. Your calypso was very good and your tone and diction was a cut above all the others who tried so horribly to sing. I have to say I expected more from many of the contestants in the talent and Q/A rounds.

Dominicans can be vicious when it comes to criticizing the work that is done for the queen show but you have to understand how much you and your counterparts represent to us. You are supposed to be the cream of the crop, the best, most beutiful and brightest that we, as a poeple, have to offer. Those are huge pumps to fill so please excuse us for not being blown away by the show or by some of the things that took place last night.

Ok so with that said, the work begins now for the rest of the hourney. i think you are quite capable of winning as many crowns as Marcia or any of the others. How badly do oyu want it? Be yourself, be natrual and remeber you have a right to be here, you have earned this and you mst step into it boldly as if it were tailor made for you. You perspective and outlook need to be set on OPEN so that you can digest all what is about to be thrown at you in a short space of time.

Seek advice from Marcia B, she will always be open to tell you what it is really like and pobably caution you of some of the pitfalls that may lie ahead of contestants in regional competitions. From what i know of Marcia, she is someone who is very honest and what you see is what you get from her. You will never have to worry about her putting up a front or misrepresenting her feelings about anything. Make her your best friend, as I am sure she has done with others who went before her and you will be just as sucessful.

Stay humble and contine to hold on to your fath as it will continue to light the way for you. This is very exciting adn the year will come ot an end before oyu know it. Relax, be good to yourself and don’t takelife too seriously, all will work out for you and for all the others. God bless you and good luck as you go forward my dear!

      Cheers!

      March 5, 2011

Firstly Congrats to you for winning the title! I think you were pretty consistent though you were not my favorite for the show.

As you prepare for the Regional Competition, which the first being in March, is it is not going to be an easy one, as Dominica have been having favorable results our the past few years. Kudos to the Queen show Committee. My advice to you is seek advice from former winner who are still on Dominica, maybe even Youtube the shows and the winners. I know the Chaperone of Miss St. Kitts have been keeping a keen eye on the show last night. Keep going to the gym to TONE your muscles for swinwear. For talent continue with the natural talent that you have, maybe using TASHA P’s He is a Boy or Let the Children be Children, developing your story around that. Work with Tasha P on your performance of this song [ moves and presentation etc]. Your evening gown need to be changed, it’s been seen too often [ colour and design etc], and continue to work on your modeling skills. For the continuous development of your Interviewing skills, work with someone in the Media [ Mrs. Green Brown at DBS, the Henry girl who is into Communications or even the current Events Director Mrs. Meade as she too is a Media person]. Most importantly READ and LISTEN to the News both radio and Television as this is the only way you become aware of what is happening around the WORLD, the Region, and not only Dominica.

      Take my two cent!!!

      To Miss Dominica 2011,
Let me first congratulate you on winning the pageant last night. I am however disappointed in your post on DNO. Why would you take the time out to correct DNO on what you did or did not say? This does not reflect well on you at all. Instead you should already be focusing on polishing your act and getting prepared for the upcoming regional competitions. You still have a lot of work to do to get up to the caliber of queens like Marcella, Nakita, Leandra and recently Marcia;just to name a few. Remember to be humble and not let winning the crown get to your head and refrain from responding to pettiness like you did above. A true queen rises above such things.People will misquote you and criticize but the true reflection of your character is how you respond and handle these situations.
Again congratulations and make us proud…..

Looking at this competiton – too little weight is placed on what matters most or should matter most. Talent and Intelligence = These set you apart in a competition like this.

Anyone can be made up = photogenic
Tailormade dress or well fitted=best dress
Get your bud and swimwear = best swimwear
Be the people’s person = amity or whatever

  38. QueenSpeculator
    March 5, 2011

Oh my gosh where to start. I cringed in horror last night at my computer as I watched this debacle of a show that we put up as Dominica’s best unfold.

You may or may not have been an agricultural science major in high school or college but as a Dominican, there are certain things that should be in your blood and you should know by default. How could you not know what a Feeder Road (agricultural access road) is?

You were asked about agro-processing and did not address the question at all? Is that because you did not understand the term? As college student or graduate, you should know that we have so much fruit in Dominica that ends up falling to the ground and rotting because we do not have the facilities to can, bottle, or turn that fruit into finished product with a shelf life.

You were asked to speak on the benefits of Geothermal energy and you could not even explain what it was far less for the benefits of it? You proceeded to say that Dominica was a volcanic island with hot springs? What about the fact that our country would no longer need to depend on foreign oil (Petro Caribe) to support it’s economy? What about the fact that we could sell power to neighboring islands?

You come from a country that still boasts the first ever female Prime Minister in a male dominated West Indies, and you cannot comment on impacts of women in politics? Dame Eugenia Charles must have been rolling in her grave. You were handed a cake question and you did not take advantage of it.

You come on stage in a swimsuit and do not bother to get a proper bikini wax so that you have hair in places that create ungainly silhouettes in the swimsuit? Do you think that your chaperone should not have seen you in the swimsuit and told you that did not look right?

i am not sure that I can even blame these girls. You cannot teach poise, talent, class, eloquence, or enunciation in a matter of three of even six months for that matter. However, the chaperones have to be held accountable for some of the things that went on with this show. The Ms Dominica pageant is no longer a beauty pageant as may have been the case in the 60s and 70s when some of these chaperones were queen. You can no longer take the prettiest one with the nicest complexion or longest flowing hair to put her up there just because she may look like what we consider to be a queen, if she has no substance.

I also blame the schools for not grooming or youth enough with regard to self expression and extemporaneous speech. Students are not encouraged to express and develop their individuality and ability to communicate. Instead they are beaten down into submission and being one of the ‘sheepole’ in society. I am so utterly disappointed by this showing that I cannot even say anymore because this would end up being too long.

As our calypso sours to new heights, our queens have sunk to levels that I have not seen in years. No one should have walked away with the crown after last night!

I am sure these girls are not as horrible as they presented themselves to be on the night; however you do not get a second chance to make a first impression and nerves be damned, you should have seized the opportunity to show us all what you were made of and alas NONE of you did. We as a country have to do better to convince the right people to get on that stage… These girls were pretty but were not the right people and I was embarrassed for them up there on that stage.

  40. chaos
    March 5, 2011

After last year’s competition patrons left festival city satisfied. This was manifested in the turn out at the pageant this year. But alas! The judges once again have left patrons to believe that they do not know about pageantry. This chaos in the decision can only happen when a queen is crowned before the night of the queen show. Clearly, Ms Labassiere was crowned before the actual pageant, but when the official ceromony was held she did not show up, so this left the judges desperatetly looking for a queen. Ms Fagan congratulations to you, all the best at the regionals. But, if we are to encourage patrons back to the queen show and also give the potential contestants the will to participate, the judges should not allow themselves to be held hostage by the Queen Show Committee. For the future of our Queen Show the judges should exercise professionalism (aren’t this what they are…professionals in their various fields?)
I am not a fan of Ms Joseph, but how could she not have placed last evening, it was for her to have scored almost nil in the other three rounds, which was highly impossible. Yes, Ms Joseph’s body and height is not that of the accepted queen contestant, but she should not have been accepted and then when she shows up for the ceremony turn her down. This is madness! She just didn’t suddenly become petite. This decision last evening is a total disregard and disrespect for the intelligence of the patrons.
It was obvious that the style of swimsuit worn by the contestants was designed and taylor made for Ms Labassiere’s body type. Give me a break! We are in 2011 and to clad our young ladies in this 19… look is outrageous. The trim ladies were made to look out of place last evening. This did no justice to the trim ladies. They must have paid a mint to the designer for only one night. Ms Fagan cannot think of using this swimsuit in any of the regional pageants. Having cellulites is a no no for awarding any young lady best swimsuit, but it was evident last evening that Ms Labasierre was selling them.
If there is to have an elevation in the quality of the Queen Show a complete overhaul must be done. The present committee needs to stop micro managing, If the patrons have to continue to be slapped with these chaotic results, then we may as well do like cricket and have a referral system, something, anything, whatever but not that ….!

    March 5, 2011

Mathematically, it is very possible for someone to get 2 prizes and not place.
We as Dominicans were all happy when our representative won Ms Caribbean World.
Are you aware that she didn’t win any of the prizes, nothing at all, but she won the crown because she was consistent……it worked in our favour at the time and it worked in Jacinta’s favour this time.
Example of how consistency can make one win.
    5 contestants A, B, C
    Round 1: A(20 pts), B(18pts), C(10 pts)
    Round 2: A (25 pts), B( 24 pts), C(20 pts)
    Round 3: A(9 pts), B(17 pts), C(26pts)

    Contestant A coped 2 prizes, contestant C 1 prize, contestant B none.
However, contestant B was more consistant, being second in each round and getting more total points(59pts)
Contestant A, even topping 2 of the 3 rounds, still got the least total points due to one terrible round.
    ITS MATHEMATICALLY POSSIBLE PEOPLE

    • Disappointed
      March 5, 2011

So, let me get this straight..consistency is how this young lady won? Well in that case, we need to hear a breakdown of the “consistency”. I think it is only fair. My thing is this. If she was 2nd in all the rounds regardless of who won, then she must have been pretty close to the first place winner in terms of points and to be quite honest, I don’t see how that could be. She did not carry herself well in her costume and her talent was not well delivered. Talent is something you can do and do very well. She did not do hers very well. Also, I do not see how she was best in dress. I am still trying to figure that one out – and in relation to that- who was 2nd best in dress? While she did an ok job of answering her question, she came nowhere close to Michelle so again I don’t know how she could have been 2nd in that round.

But the million dollar question at the end of the day is: why did Michelle not place? and Ms Basil, who did not win a single round came 3rd. Now how can that be? There were 4 rounds: Michelle won 2 and to me – (these were the most important rounds). Are the judges trying to say she was at the bottom pool in the costume and swinsuit round? I don’t think so…

I have always said our problem in Dominica is communication. We always keep things a secret and we seem to like controversy. Competitions like these have to potential to create muddy waters so I don’t see why the organization cannot educate the public on the judging criteria and I would further suggest that during the reading of the results they should probably name the top three ppl in the round with points. That way when the winner is announced the crowd will have some understanding. Although I expect some people may not be happy with the results because everyone has their “Queen” but we would have something to work with. That is just an opinion.

Well I only heard about the show but did not listen or participating in anyway last night. I speak to miss Fagan, know her very well, her family and friends must be very happy for her. I am very happy for her and I wish her all the best on her endeavours. Secondly, after reading most of the comments on DNO, it seems that many people are disappointed that Michelle Joseph did not place. They have a point. Is it true that beauty replaces intelligence in this country?

It is carnival time in Dominica. There are three more days left for this season, then it will be back to normal life.
There is a time and place for everything. This does not mean that they forgot the missing child. I am certain that she is very much on their minds.
Generally, people cannot concentrate on many things at one time. However, note what the new Miss Dominica stated about assisting children. Read between the lines.
In addition, I am certain that the Police Force whose obligation it is to try to find her has not ceased investigating the case of the missing child.

I thought it was a good show. With some encouragement and help, the queen should be able to bring some regional crowns home. My only thing is that I think the Committee needs to come out and defend itself against the criticism about the question round. I know they prepare the girls for that….I just don’t know what is wrong every year like that.

  60. Diaspora posse
    March 5, 2011

i never have difficulties with the judges decision; the quality of the show leaves a lot to be desired. we need to work with the girls on using their true talent and not trying to adopt a talent for the show. the talent round was really disappointing. and boy every year the girls make a mess of the answers. is anyone listening? there is time between selection and the actual show – give the girls some practice. you see the amount of practice the calypso competitors get in the tents? create opportunities for the girls to practice. bring them on at the tents; ask them questions while the guys are singing. have them comment at the princess show, teenage pageant; let them do some small promotional speeches in an adhoc manner. we need to improve on that segment. In closing, i need to say that the girls gave their best and we need to move on and give the queen our support; i too cant understand why our best talent and most intelligent person could not secure a place in the top three. but say consa y ya!!!!

    • LET US EVOLVE FOR THE BETTER
      March 5, 2011

Hear, hear and I totally agree with you on that score! At one point I thought I was at some wonna be calypso show with singers out of tune and what a drag that was.

Contestants should really look up the meaning of the word ‘talent’ and equate this to something they like, enjoy and do exceedingly well and comfortable……not make believe that I can sing when in deed I am actually scaring everyone who with out of tune noises.

The people advising the contestants need to be upfront, honest and realistic enough to realise that they need to advise contestants to choose areas that they are most suited to.

In my opinion all the contestants did a good job.As a past contestant of a national pageant i can say that it is hard, hard work.I can also add that the judges can be quite unfair. i must say that ms Fagan wasn’t my first choice but her performance was good. now i believe that some sort of standard should be put it place when selecting candidates for this show. people focus way too much on just beauty. i mean of-course beauty should b a criteria but intelligence should come way before beauty. I am positive that that the candidates were given the list of questions in advanced. they would not have know which question they would be asked but they knew all the questions there they had time to think of intelligent or even basic answers. i was very disappointed in ms Earlene Labassiere for her answer about geothermal energy in dominica. I mean come on, there has been so much talk about this and you cant even answer the question, she just talked about dominica being a volcanic country and our hot springs…they asked how would it BENEFIT us!!!! AND also the contestant who was asked the question in relation to social security, she could not have given a more stupid answer. wat does social security have to do withe government and taxes???? does she even have a job?? and if yes does she pay social security ?? cause if she did she would know what it is. Winner of the show will represent Dominica, so we cant just say she looks good, she must also be confident, intelligent, respectful, because when she represent us whatever she says or do will reflect us as dominicans! SO next year i hope the committee will focus more on intelligence.

    D.C

    • hmm
      March 5, 2011

for your information, queen contestants do not receive the ‘list of questions’ before the show. during regular rehearsals there is time allocated for the Q&A round through DISCUSSION of current issues and ‘areas’ from which questions may be developed. For example, a general discussion may be held about “Haiti” or “Geothermal energy” but the contestants will have no idea what question on the topic will come up or even if it will come up.

      • bosslady
        March 5, 2011

even if they dont receive the actual questions, at least they receive the topics which is more than enough. from the topics they should be able to deduce what possible questions will come up. these are young people that will represent us. they at least should be able to be answer these questions without prior knowledge

      • LET US EVOLVE FOR THE BETTER
        March 5, 2011

Yes in deed they do know the possible topics that they can expect and it is up to them to familiarise themselves with topical, current affairs issues of the day by reading newspapers, listening to the news, etc. How so I know this because I friends who work with pageantry and also those who have been judges or former contestants.

Whilst one may not know which question they will get as some others have said, some sort of knowledge to at least expand upon with and example or two in one or two sentences on the subject who more than suffice.

Also each contestant has their personal questions that they choose whether linked to their platform or what……….so yet another avenue to do exceedingly well in this category with deligent work and paying attention to what is going on around you. Total disappointment in the Q&A and talent segments!

Mathematically, it is very possible for someone to get 2 prizes and not place. Most likely, she did terrible in the other rounds. Consistency wins pageants all the time. We as Dominicans were all happy when our representative won Ms Caribbean World. Are you aware that she didn’t win any of the prizes, nothing at all, but she won the crown because she was consistent. U all don’t know anything about judge! Jacinta was more consistent than the others. Is not because michelle got best talent and miss intelligent she had to win. Jacinta did well in all the round therefore her points added upto more than the others….Dominican put on u all thinking caps and stop making u all self look like fools!

jesinta fagan did not deserve that crown.michelle was intelligent and also had the best talent.i see her as the queen.if jesinta fagan cant answer the simple questions asked tonight.how will she be able to represent us for the other pageants outside dominica?

        • unbiased
          March 5, 2011

Michelle an Jacita gave the best answers so she can answer a simple question FYI….and like previously stated it is consistency that counts….though michelle may have gotten best talent and best questions her other rounds maybe didnt make up to get her in the top three…..but on the other hand jacinta was consistent in all rounds so the points added up in the end..be smart if someone 90, 85, 50 60 20 they will get get lower than someone who gets..80,70,75,70,85..consistency is key ppl remember that

      • Disappointed
        March 5, 2011

If it was between the two of them then how come Michelle did not place?

two rounds alone michelle was goo in so how it can be bewteen her and jacinta. michelle dress was ugly and not fiting well, michelle to hard in that swim wear her colour was not going with her, michelle costume was to heavy for her and she stiff. so those others bit in those wrongs . SO WAT THE HELL ALL U MAKING NOISE ABOUT SHOW JUDGED FAIR

I am of the oppinion that Michele Joseph should have placed in the top 3. This is certainly discouragement to our young ladies. Congrats to Jacintha, you did well but Michele should have placed.

she is too too young….if michelle had given that exact same performance in maybe 2 years time she would of won hands down

      • Proud Dominican
        March 5, 2011

If she was too young, then they should have told her that from the beginning. You should judge the young ladies on the performance of the night and not on age or size.

          March 7, 2011

Dont forget Michele Joseph came into the competition when another young lady pulled out…perhaps she too was contemplating doing it in two years.. I was also of the opiinion that she should have placed…but the more I look at Jacintha, the more she is growing on me…go out there and represent DA girl…Im behind you %!!!!!!!!

These are some of the most beautiful girls in Dominica, I can not deny. But I was shocked when none of them could answer a simple question.

How are they supposed to represent up fully in regional competition?

CONGRATS! Ms Fagan. I always thought you would win. You did the competition with such ease and poise. Enjoy your reign. Please work on the question portion of the competition.

Also, all you girls don’t need to sing because it is talent round. i am sure you have a real actual talent. Talent was really disappointing along with question and answer.

      March 5, 2011

Seriously the singing was horrible well not all and 5 out of 7 of them sang they should of tried something different…to me most of the contestants were really nervous during the question an answer round and you could see that but i cant blame..though they have an idea of what the questions may be this is the only round which they have not rehersed for countless nights so it kind of gets them of guard…Earlyn really disappointed be that round….you could see that she she knew what she wanted to say but she didnt deliver it properly

      • Meeeeeeeeee

so how is it that michelle joseph get best in question and answer and best talent and she doh place

    • no name
      March 5, 2011

because they wanted the labassiere girl to win so they had to mess up the points on the other rounds.
best talent and best question and answer and to me she was the best in evening wear, and she did not win, come on

      • ray
        March 5, 2011

she did not get best in evening wear…. and the best talent wasn’t for her she was totally off key none of her low notes were heard……. she should of just played the violin and done with that… but she deserved a place in the top.

    • unbiased
      March 5, 2011

u also have to consider the fact that yes she did get best in talent and best question but maybe her points in the round were not that great…her evening wear was not all the great an it didnt fit her very well so all dat is a deduction of points….the other segments maybe didnt do her juctice to get her in the top three.
