Jemer Joseph, of Woodfordhill, has emerged the winner of Iron Chef Dominica 2013 Competition held at the Anchorage Hotel on Thursday evening.
Joseph is a chef at Secret Bay Resort near Portsmouth.
This is the second time the competition was held and it forms part of the 20th Anniversary celebration of DIVE FEST.
The judging criteria for the Iron Chef competition was as follows:
1. Presentation of Chef
2. Skill & Efficiency
3. Flare and Showmanship
4. Choice/diversity of dishes
5. Creativity, artistry and extent of use of the ingredients
6. Presentation of dishes
7. Taste of dishes
The Chefs had 30 minutes on Center-Stage to produce a starter and a main course.
Competitors were supplied with the following:
1. A 2 burner table top stove, set on a table with a basin
2. Branded ingredients from Astaphans and vegetables from the local market
3. Hot water in flasks, water for rinsing and cleaning, and plates/bowls for service,
4. Chefs were asked to come equipped with their tools including their favourite skillets, small saucepan(s), utensils and of-course knives and a good chopping board.
Last year Jessica Pinard-Byrne Yard, Food Enthusiast and Entrepreneur, won the title.
Jemer u topped it and u won! congrats my girl, Dominican need to look at da positive side and start appreciating.
Boy dominican alone that will try to bring down their own people.u will never find a indian or arab do that.the woman try shat man.any way congrats again cuz
Good morning my people. I want to congratulate Ms Joseph for winning the competition but she must realized that. If her winning dish is going to be photograph then its her ultimate responsibility to make sure its cleaned up before its photographed. Also if the dish was photographed by a photographer from DNO then that person should understand that they are presenting the dish to the world therefore they must be cognizant of how it will look on their Wedsite. I hope I will be able to sample her dishes when I visit in November . Again congrats to Ms Joseph.
Why are Dominicans so afraid of truthful critique. The dish is sloppily presented. That is plain for all to see. It was a competition and therefore such comments are warranted and people are within their rights to comment on a story that was presented to them about a winner of a competition.
If no comments were desired, the story should not have been posted.
Dominicans, next time you walk into a restaurant in Roseau, carry out this experiment.
Ask what for lunch?
This is the response you would get.
Fish, pork, chicken…. ( or what ever meats they have)
The reason the dont tell you what else you will get with the meat is because they already expect you to know…
Rice, peas, provisions… that is always the response.
That tells me that my people are not creative with their meals, its like dog food, same thing everyday, why not be creative with the provisions, or be creative with the rice, or add other side dishes… its the same every, rice, peas, provisions. Its a pity.
DNO, whats the name of the dish? Looks like a one pot?
Wow… I need to enter that competition to raise the standard.
congratulations to you miss joseph.it is always good to read positive news, I am so sick and tired of the negative

Congratulations, Iron Chef Dominica 2013. Being a contestant is no easy matter. It comes with anxiety and stress to complete the dish in a given time. Your dish must have excelled which is why you came first. Good luck for the future.

‘Cindy’ and’ wooty to de bone’I would rather have a cup of ‘unboiled’water than eat whats on that plate. Thanks but no thanks!
Admin, can you tell us the name of the starter and main course dish Chef Joseph prepared? Thanks.
ya a little more detail plz
We are so quick to tear each other down. Can we be a little more constructive in our comments? is that the way we wore brought up not to be happy for another ones accomplishment? We waste no time to speak hurtful words. Dominicnewsonline is bringing us news some of you try telling them how they should present their news how rude. Any way congratulation miss joseph on your accomplishment hold your head up high job well done. you didn’t sit by the side road wasting time. that’s the way to go.
Admin, can you tell us the name of the starter and main course dish Chef Joseph prepared?
It looks like lion fish, cous cous and pumpkin with a generous amount of chives and a stale slice of lime. Auguste Escoffier must be turning in his grave at the sight of such a sloppy presentation. Then again, what can you cook in thirty minutes?
It’s the famous Lion Fish with Cous Cous and Sauteed Pumpkins….. So delicious!…. Only a person who knows real food and have eaten at the best places would appreciate such a meal!…. Well done Jemer!… Secret Bay must be proud!
The fact that he won means that his was better than the rest.
So what did the other people present?
DNO please tell us what was in that dish. To me it looks like a melange, or as some of my padnas would say a JOBOOM…
look like dog food
omg… no wonder people prefer to eat home in dominica, but, congratulations
do you guys knnow that this chief or cook is the one who does the cooking for a resort which has received numerous awards for excellence?so all u haters can eat
celia i would really like to see your presentation.these chefs were timed.who knows maybe in the rush to complete on time the garnishing got here and there and didnot have time to fix it.so what
Go Secret Bay!!!!!!…. Great job Jemer!….. Wow, I know that Ana and the others are very proud of you!…. You made us all proud!!!!
Is that “Todays’ Special?”What is it consist of?
We i don’t mean to put her down especially as she has my families name (no relation) but why has the journalist note advised us of what the dish is, is it because HE DON’T KNOW? It’s unrecognisable, i’m sure it must taste nice but i give her 1 for presentation…………..sorry
@celia – u dont know anything about cooking/ go and arrange your fig on your plate how u accustom to do, by length
I totally agree. If a plate was presented to me like that, I would have doubts. It may taste nice but sight goes a long way and this is not a matter of criticism. When I first saw the plate I was wondering what is that and where is the winning plate. Only to find out that when I continued to scroll down guess what? It said “The winning dish”
Do not give her 1 for presentation. This has nothing to do with her. She came first therefore the overal presentation was excellent. The dish looks presentable and palatable. She deserves 10 to 100.
The reason why the name of the dish may not have been posted is, so that the recipe is not stolen or it was oerlooked. Just my thought.
What is important, she is the Iron Chef Dominica 2013. Congratulate her.
Celia, You are a 100% correct, actually I would give it a 0 for presentation. I am also not surprised that you received so many negative thumbs down. When I eat at so many restaurants in Roseau the food looks no different from what I see there, it actually looks like left overs. I am sure it might taste nice, but it sure is not pleasant to the eyes, its very untidy.
We in Dominica have become used to mediocrity, if this was presented to a customer in another country, he would have lost his job, with immediate effect.
To prove my point, if he won with that presentation, you can imagine what the others looked like.
stop trying to bring the lady down.many of u can not even boil water,so shut the hell up
not only can they not boil water, they would burn water
Looks delicious! Clearly some people do not know the appearance of high class meal.
Congratulations to the new Iron Chef!
The only thing I’s critique is, I didnt see a title of the dish.
Also for the heavy critiques on here, bear in mind that the contestants were only given limited ingredients and had to produce a meal in 30 minutes.
I do not know about you all, but it takes me that much time to try to figure out what I am cooking for dinner. (With a pantry full of ingredients)
So she did well
I agree with alot of other peoples views. Her presentation needs to be much better. You should atleast be able to tell what it is thats in the plate. but I guess it taste much better than it looks so congrats.
Can we please know the names of the other participants and also the name of the dishes the winner prepared.
well as a food lover and cook i would love to know what the dish is called and what was used to prepare the dish again congrats.
please note that ms joseph dish is the one to the right and not the one to the left
What are you talking about? There is only one plate with food on it
There is only one dish.
i thought is left overs that on d plate dia wii boi
if is dat i paying my money 4 better i go by the river and cook a jot
@ who vex vex – ur sillier than a rabbit without tricks. shut your mouth u silly WABBIT,
Crude, rude, disrespectful and insensible. Have you not watched the US Iron Chef and other such programs?
well miss lady, who preventing you from going to the river to cook your jot.woodfordhill all the way yea.
Did you not know left overs taste better than the original dish?
I did not read your comment before, but I thought the same, and she works for a Hotel? hmmmmmmmmm.
For a hotel tha’s winning a lot of international accolade. So talk all you s***
whenever someone trying Dominican do their best to bring down the person. look at the comments u all making I wonder if some of u can do better or even hot some water. u all think is only Dominican that reading your comments
Those lack class and dignity.
They apparently think that. The judges felt that her dish was worth winning, and that is that.
i agree with you, Dominicans are not trying to do anything to build up themselves but since one person is trying, the critics will be the first to open their mouth. That is why our country can never go forward. Remember your words as an individual that bring you down, not ppl or government. Grow up ppl
If we are going to have copy cat shows like these, then let the participants brush up on their skills also.
I need to know the name of the dish. I would like the name of the dish, main ingredients and that the dishes be placed on a neat table for presentation. If you are going to send these people’s pics all through cyberspace, then give them an opportunity to do a great job…not good, great!
By the way-is the college ready to take on hospitality so that students can have avenues for this type of outlet? I’m just saying…hello Mr. Soft Subjects up there at DSC…
Dishes that are thoroughly cooked do not photograph well because they look wilted and messy. The appetizing meals we see in photos are make up and Science.
Apparently the picture was taken immediately after preparation. Given what was required the lady rushed to finish her dish in a timely manner. I think the photographer could not wait to take the picture. She WON regardless.
Could have been a Little better
What could have been better, the dish? I guess the other dishes including presentation was worse than this one.
I agree, see the presentation from last year, not the best, but much much better:

This food looks like a total mess.Get this off quickly.
Post yours, we would like to see what it looks like. Inquiring minds want to know.
it look s like a mess because u is a hungry ghut and dont know about dishes and recipies
As a culinary art teacher, I am very disappointed in seeing such a presentation. She needs to be given a scholarship to get some professional training.
If that is the type of dish presented to guests at Secret Bay, I am no longer thrilled in staying there for my next vacation in Dominica.
Are you willing to give classes/training to person such as the winner and others? Or just the usual critic!
Why don’t you leave some contact info so interested persons can get to you and learn, but so doing the standards of presentation will increase and we will see less chefs being brought in from outside to get jobs in the local market. Just a thought!
indeed I am and just want to know who are the right people to contact.
Wait, a woman who won? I thought it was a guy. My apologies. It looks yummy to me, I don’t know why everyone is complaining.
thirty minutes for a starter and a course meal. u think is whole day she had man???? hmmmm
Have you seen HELL’S KITCHEN?
My girl, you wouldn’t be able to stay there cause there is not for low class people like you!!!!…. You wouldn’t even be able to afford that dish presented!….. Damn up and fast!
sloppy presentation, i’m sorry
You did not taste it. You are narrow-minded. I tis obvious that you do not view such shows on TV. There are various ones.
Presentataion of this dish is lacking…i’m guessing it must have tasted hella good for him?her? to win….I really can’t tell by the name nor photo if its a guy or girl…no offense..
You are a negative person. She is beautiful. For all those christian Dominica have when certain subjects come up. Hate is all I see. That did not need to be said. The dish looks great and colorful.
What difference it makes? Can you not see that she is wearing “her cooks cap?” Cooks who especially serve the public must cover their entire head so that stands of hair do not fall into the menu as they prepare it.
“strands”
DNO…Wouldn’t it be nice to know what the ingredients of the winning dish were…
Way to go girl congratulation
Can we get a description of the dishes?
Yes need the description and recipe please
DNO just post pictures and most times there are no captions.
Poor presentation! It looks sloppy and food all over the place. The first one is very confusing.U all to like to imitate what u see on tv.Be original!
I agree. When platting food, garnish must never make your dish look untidy but enjoyable. A little wiping of the would have help but of course I’m sure she knows all this, maybe time was against her.
30 minutes to prepare a Starter and Main Course. Could you do better? Stupes
I think that the photographer rushed to take the picture, I believe the lady was running out of time, I am pretty sure this is NOT how she presents her meals at the Secret Bay Hotel. She would NOT be still employed. Give the lady a break. The photographer is at fault for this one.
way papa imitate? Did you see a man on the TV fighting to peel a plantain give us a break!
Go Iron chef DA
Because you know nothing about food and its preparation. Search recipe Websites and you will see similar presentations.
If you are a man, when last you cooked a meal for yourself or for the family?
Congrats but the second dish looks a little messy
nice
Mouth: watered! Congrats!
congrats
Congratulations girl! The sky’s the limit.
congrats, nice pleau
congratulations….I don’t know you but I am very proud of you. I am rather happy that we can showcase our skills and talents with food
once again…congratulations
why do we like to immitate what we see on tv?
Because imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so why not??? You have a problem with that?
why do you like to imitate other humans by breathing
LMAO
I understand the idea of wanting to do something to showcase our skills. But you seem to forget we are a “copy and paste” population. They could have given a next name.
“another”
