Bartender Kanrauwn David, 24 an employee of the Fort Young Hotel has won the 2016 Mixology title.

The event formed part of this year’s Nature Island Food & Drink Festival which was at the Anchorage Hotel on Friday night.

He beat his opponent, bartender Ezekiel Charles of La Flambeau Restaurant and Beach Bar, to take the title.

They competed in two rounds; the first was to prepare a cocktail using the shaking method, while the other round involved blending.

David prepared a ‘Caribbean Cooler’ – a drink with added ingredients including vodka, orange juice, lime juice, cranberry and Almond Liquor in the first round of the competition and in the second round, he prepared a ‘Bloody Mango Blast’, the main ingredients of which were mango, pineapple and vodka.

“I was expecting more competition, but I was happy with what turned out,” he told Dominica News Online (DNO) shortly after his win.

David, who has been ‘mixing’ for the past two years called on more bartenders to showcase their skills.

“There are a lot of skills out there but bar tending is one that really inspired me,” David stated. “I never thought I would be here right now at this moment.”

David noted that he was not only representing himself in the competition but all other bartenders on island.

“This is just to show them that it’s not just being at the back of your job but also coming out and show the locals, patrons and other guests that you can showcase at anytime,” he argued.

David said also that he is looking forward to compete in the Mixology competition next year.

As part of his winning prize David will spend two weeks in St Lucia at Coco Palm where he will work with Master Mixologist, Demitrius Octave.
