Miss Dominica, Leslassa Armour Shillingford, will take to the stage on June 28, to compete with other beauties from around the region in the Miss Carival 2013 pageant in St. Vincent.

The event will be staged under the theme ’28 Years of Exquisite Pageantry’ at Carnival City, Victoria Park.

Armour Shillingford told DNO on Friday that she is looking forward to the show. “I am going to try my hardest because I want to bring home the crown,” she said.

She said she has not stopped practicing since she competed in the Miss Caribbean World Pegeant in Tortola on May, where she secured 1st Runner Up position. “I am trying everything I can,” she stated. “All the T’s are crossed and all the I’s dotted.”

She thanked her team for the support and Anchorage Hotel, her main sponsor.

She is now calling on all Dominicans in St. Vincent to come out in large numbers to support her. “Crowd support and energy is very helpful,” she said.

The full slate of contestants is as follow:

1. Barbados – Dannyele Teneel Leslie
2. B.V.I. – Shari Bianca Ylina de Castro
3. Dominica – Leslassa Armour Shillingford
4. Dominican Republic – Rosa Emelia Martinez Javier
5. Jamaica – Kabrena Latoya Robinson
6. St kitts & Nevis – Zinga Ayesha Johariah Imo
7. St Lucia – Janelle Desir
8. Trinidad & Tobago – Jenelle Jenny Thongs
9. Venezuela – Yaimer de los Angeles Armes Macias
10. St Vincent & the Grenadines – Shara George.

A number of activities has been planned in the run up to the show.

There will be a talent preview on June 24, a sashing and meeting with the St Vincent media on June 25, followed by a dress rehearsal.

On June 26, the contestants will visit various business places in Kingstown after which they will meet with the prime minister and various members of his cabinet. An official motorcade will be held later that day around Kingstown.

The winner of the crown will take home US$4,300 from the Carnival Development Corporation (CDC), while the first runner-up will receive US$1,300 and Second runner-up, US$700.

This is the second regional competition Shillingford-Armour will be competing in since she captured the Miss Dominica crown during the carnival season earlier this year.

To Shameless – I guess you have never heard of a hyphenated last name. The girl’s mother is an Armour, her father is a Shillingford, their kids are Armour-Shillingford! I am so fed up with dominicans and their last name nonsense, its always the ones like you that bring it up that seem to have an issue with “last names” If you look at the dynamics of dominica, gone are the days when the haves and have nots were separate, right now the so called upper crust of society is educated along side, intermingling with and yes friends of average dominicans (Thank God for changes!!!!). And further to the point….yes she is unmarried and can be Armour-Shillingford…wow…educate yourself before you write please!

@ Bully you were making sense up to a point. While you are telling Shameless to educate themselves mind explaining what you mean by “friends of average dominicans”? What is an average Dominican or even person? Last I check all people are created equal. You still function from the massa mentality you sort to correct Shameless on. So in the end both of you are still ignorant.

Good luck Leslassa. No doubt, all Dominicans are vying for you. Enjoy yourself; have fun; be safe. Keep in mind, you’re (as many of us were. :)) only young once. Make the most of the opportunity. Safe travel to and from. God bless!

I think she will win. She seems very humble and likeable and hopefully will stay that way. I saw how last years winner let it get to her head calling herself ‘her majesty’ and going on nonstop about her long hair. Every other dominican has long hair. There have been dozens of Miss Dominica’s and nobody else behaved like that. I think Dominicans made too much of her fuss of her and it got to her head. stay grounded Leslassa best.and do yourb

You know, sometimes I jus get fed up of the so called “BIG SURNAMES” that is a relic of the days gone by being rubbed in our faces. DNO, please, what the young lady’s last name? Is it Armour or Shillingford? She is unmarried so she cant be Armour Shillingford unless someone feels like it is more important to represent her families in the capacity as queen than the populace . Come on man, lets get over ourselves (last name s nonsense) and stick with the program.

    Assertive, NOT Agressive!

      June 22, 2013

please stop being an idiot and get over yourself…the young lady’s parents are divorced and because of this she LEGALLY carries both of their names…it is definitly not a publicity stunt so please stop living in the 18th century.

      June 22, 2013

haven’t you ever heard of parents choosing to give their children both their surnames?? it is recorded that way…

    • Justice and Truth
      June 22, 2013

How old are you and how long have you lived in Dominica or are you residing in Dominica? Why question her choice of surnames?
Her mother’s maiden name is ‘Armour’. Her mother’s married name is ‘Shillingford.’ You want to know her grandmother’s (on her mother’s side) surname? She was a ‘Joseph’ – still is :) except she married an ‘Armour’.
I know them all. I can give you an account of them. In brief, from my point of view, they are all well-known and nice people.
Give Leslassa her dues. She loves those names and decided to use her mother’s maiden name and her mother’s married name. So be it. It is her prerogative. Is there anyone who will deprive her of her right to do so? I see nothing wrong with that. In fact, it did not surprise me or others who know her family and herself that she chose to use both names. There are some people who do that. Why let it bother you and why make an issue out of it?

      • Ok
        June 24, 2013

You that Justice and Truth always extra. I think the bitter Canadian cold has frozen your brain cells. Who gives a darn if you know her or her family? The children have always used Armour-Shillingford point finale. I know alot of people who refer to both of their parents last names. Some of you make things worst than better.

    • YesI
      June 23, 2013

Parents these days opt to have their children carry their both last names. Hence maybe the reason for her two last names. It is legal although I find it nonsensical. However, especially in PR, the mother’s last name is usually added after the fathers last name, so your child will be named Pedro Cuentas Rios, Cuentas the fathers name and Rios being the mothers name. Maybe we in the English Caribbean just follow fashion. Case in point, it is a new trend albeit foolish.

    • well...
      June 23, 2013

are u serious? U almost sound like you blaming DNO for the girl’s name lol. Her legal name IS Armour-Shillingford…and you have a problem with that?
