Crush, never attempt to encourage an individual by destructively criticizing another. Almost sounds like their is alot of animosity from you towards Nadira. You hurled alot of insults at Nadira. The young lady did well and so we must recognize that. They each have their own unique style. Stop attacking Nadira. We as a people must do some soul searching. Too much hatred has plagued our land. Nadira keep your head up. Leslassa continue to do your thing. One Love!

Hear, hear, and I couldn’t have said it any better myself dear!!!! 

I believe when people lack “high self-esteem”, generally they turn to such immature and toxic behaviour to fill their thirst for this.

My advise to such individuals would be to find something that excites and ignites your passion for it, and do just as lovely Nadira did and follow those dreams, as I assure you it’ll be worth it in the end.

According to Mr Garvey, “If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won even before you have started.” By|: Marcus Garvey

Hopefully one day that unhappy individual will find such happiness and soar just like Nadira did. :-D

I know we are getting a bit excited here but the DFC should not be bullied into sending anyone to Miss World when they are struggling enough as it is financially. Furthermore the judging criteria for Miss World is totally different to the caribbean so we might not even get past the introductions. There will be dozens of girls who look like Leslassa and many will be very beautiful. Plus we in the Caribbean are trained to very fake at pagaents. the judges will spot that straight away. This is the main reason caribbean girls don’t do well at these pagaents.

    • July 1, 2013

No one is bullied into sending anyone to Miss World pageant. We are not struggling more than anyone else. Agreed, the judging criteria for Miss World is totally different to the Caribbean, but we may get past the introductions. Of course all the contestants are beautiful; however, the pageant is not all about beauty. How do you fake pageants? Have you watched these shows, rooted for a particular person as the winner and at the end this person did not even make the cut? I have. FYI, these contestants are winners in their own country, but they get additional training when the enter the pageant. So what if our contestant do not make the finals, at least she will be exposed to the difference. They all do not make it, they try and this is what it is all about. All are winners because they tried.

Beauty is not the reason Caribbean girls do not do well at these pageants. KEEP WATCHING.

I understand where you’re coming from but I know that my cousin Leslassa has what it takes to take part in Miss World. Regarding the financial aspect, I think it will be worth the investment. Countries need to invest money in things like this to advertise their country. Dominica desperately needs this type of advertising. As for the fakeness, Lassa is the most real person that I know. Even in interviews she is always honest, kind and poised; everything you need for the international stage.

That is what you call VINDICATION they in Tortola knew they just wanted to give the Caribbean World crown to their hometown girl. After all more than half the judges went to the same church as her, don’t tell me that s not a conflict of interest. If BVI was that great, why didn’t she place in this contest? Tato tato…

Its all good to be excited about Miss Universe pageants etc but does anyone know the cost involved? I thank you

    • FLAGS
      June 30, 2013

Tell me about it the cost is to much way to expensive for Dominica the organization cannot afford to sponsor a local queen show is Miss Universe they can fund in our dreams

    • July 1, 2013

That is why there is sponsorship. The money do not come out of their own pockets. They get sponsored by their country. To SPONSOR is to PROMOTE.

    • Ti_kye_cocoa
      July 5, 2013

To send contestants you have to join the organization and as anything Donald Trump is involved in, you know it is not going to be cheap. Initial investment is in the neighborhood of 20K US dollars with a $5000.00 annual membership fee to keep sending girls every year. All they provide is hotel, and sponsored activates. Airfare and sundry expenses has to be provided by the country of origin/sponsor. You talking about $20 000.00 in wardrobe alone because you have to appear in a different evening gowns at several different judged events. Also there is hair and make up that are done by the show’s image consultants that you have to foot the bill for along with promotional media package which could add up to an additional $8000.00 to $15000.00 US dollars. So ballpark, the Ms. Universe Pageant could cost Dominica around 50K US dollars. Now oyu get why we don’t go?

Whereas some countries lack these basics, let us all help Her Majesty get to the Miss Universe to showcase our masterpiece. After all nothing beats a failure but a trial.Congrats Miss Dominica Miss Carival for a job well done.

    June 30, 2013

I noticed leslassa is quite liked by Dominicans. I hope she realises is because of her humility and friendliness she is getting all this support. Please Leslassa do not be tempted into changing because of this. I know it can get into someone’s head (like it did Nadira), when people are calling you queen, your majesty etc and everyone wants to take your picture and people complementing you all the time. All that is part of the test to see how genuine you are. Nadira right now thinks she is a real queen, asking people to not disturb her and complaining about the pressures of fame lol. Dont behave like that. Its only a one year title and dozens have one it before. I believe lesslassa can make it to miss world. Miss world is not judged like caribbbean competitions. Notice Miss cuba and dominican republic never place in our shows but send the same girl to miss world/universe, she will win. Grace, inside beauty and humility has a lot to do with it. Nadira would not do well as miss world. First or all she is too short. I watched her performances and there was no wow factor. I believe she won coz they wanted to give it to a carib person to send a message. I was shocked about antigua as the performance was mediocore. leslassa on the other hand is talented and natural. nadira has a made up accent. Dominicans dont speak like that unless they are copying Americans and thats so irritating. All the radio girls are doing this weird thing with their r’s and queen contestants are copying that.

Nice, some fail to understand that those who fear God will not condone this hatred. It is like trying to convince a potential buyer to purchase a product, you make ten statements, nine positive and one negative. The one negative statement will remain in your potential customer head, and more than likely you will lose the sale.

When I read DNO’s Headline, I said, “WOW!” So happy to know that Leslassa captured Miss Carival crown. Way to go!
How elated she must be including her entire family and friends.
Congratulations Leslassa! You have excelled in winning the crown. You put forth your best. You are a beauty, mixture of Joseph, Armour and Shillingford.
Fellow Dominican residents you must be proud of her. We who reside abroad join you in congratulating her and this celebration, if only in thoughts, words and spirit.
God bless you and with whatever endeavour you undertake in the future.
Dominica on the map. Ever since I resided in Dominica, it was always said by non-Dominicans guys that Dominica has the most beautiful girls/women.
I remember when there were inter-school tournaments in Dominica and how the guys of the other West Indian countries who participated loved Dominican girls. One of my friends married one. Some of us became penpals.

  24. June 29, 2013

    CONGRATULATIONS!

Everyone, including myself, asks, why a Dominican has never get sponsored to a MISS UNIVERSE or MISS WORLD PAGEANT? Leslassa, as MISS DOMINICA and MISS CARIVAL, speak up and ask your sponsors to send you to represent us, DOMINICA, in one of these pageants. That would be lovely.

    June 29, 2013

Alex..I wish you would stop calling names as if some queens are better than others. I bet every Miss Dominica would argue for various reasons why they represented Dominica well. A good Miss Dominica is not about how many crowns you win. How can you even think that. Was there internet, mobile phones and access to the whole world with just pressing a button 15years ago? of course recent queens will do better than past queens. Plus there was a lot of prejudice in those days and the committee used to back certain people more than others. Marcella was lucky to have had that backing, not because she was better than anyone else. Trace back to all the carnival queens. See what they are doing now and you will find its not the ones who won regional crowns that are successful. Queens before had proper competition overseas, nowadays the regional competitors are weak. Its easier to win

    • HAHAHA

      Dear true talk,

      Greetings:

As I said, the debate will go one. Please read my posts carefully my dear friend. I never suggest the any queen was better or did better than the other, I simply forwarded a few names of queen who had an impact on me (especially in recent times). If there are others who impacted you, please include their names. Let us not be telling each other how we should comment on issues; this sounds like censorship.

Probably you have stories you would wish to share…so please share them. Tell us about your experiences…I suspect you may even be a past queen, begin by publishing you name (I hope I am not commanding you or telling you what to do).

      Let the conversation go on…

There is something unique about our Carnival Queens, going far back as possible but certainly peaking with Marcella Larocque-Menal. They have a sense of belief, confidence and competitive zeal which is uncommon in their compatriots. If one would conduct a study of our queens achievements in regional competitions – and I might – we may be amazed to see just how imposing they are. In recent times, queens Nakita Bruno, Leandra Lee Lander, Nadira Lando, Jacintha Fagan, and now Leslassa have shown that our queens are beyond the ordinary.[An extract from my fb post]

Hi Alex, with all due respect to you and what you are suggested is conducted perhaps you and others may wish to embark on this research.

However, before you proceed I suggest that all of the facts are topped and tailed fully before proceeding.

It is one thing to begin to names former Miss Dominica’s who performed and won titles at optimum level but yet another to forget note worthy ones in the process.

One of the risks beginning to name people is to forget others that you should know about but nonetheless were perhaps unintentionally omitted from this list. That why sometimes a general description would have sufficed, as opposed to singling out individuals.

Diane Francis was also a brilliant former Miss Dominica who also won some regional pageants to. More recently Marah Walters and Marcia Baptiste were also exemplary delegates for Dominica in regional pageants and more importantly won several titles as well. Along with those on your list I also thought they were all “Miss Universe” and “Miss World” calibre.

Those mentioned above are from my recall memory, who actually won one or more regional titles and represented superbly well also, in addition to most of the other ladies on your list.

Perhaps we can open up a blog that will allow people to give names of former Miss Dominicas together with their achievements, etc. That’s something that should be documented in audio, video and PowerPoint Presentations, and used as part of our tourism/cultural tools to promote our culture.

Wonder whether the Cultural Division or Carnival Organising Committee, has some sort of archive documenting these achievements over the years? Sounds like an interesting, worthwhile project to embark on if you ask me.

add to that Marah Walter and Marcia Baptiste. Our beauties have been representing Dominica very well!!

        June 29, 2013

Yes, for real. I note that queens Marcia and Marah could also be included on the list of queens that I published. No offence meant by that omission. In fact, I played a little part in Marah’s run for the thrown and Marcia is like sister; she knows that. They (Marah and Marcia) also represented DA well and I am very proud of them.

Queen Samantha Sammy Doctrove was brilliant…queen Kamala was great, I mean the list goes on and on and on…but, as I said, I just highlighted the few names which came to me at the time that I was writing.

The point was made, however, and I thank the many who joined in the conversation. Thanks for the love which you expressed. Big respect to Dominican and Caribbean women…and women of the world by extension.

        More POWER to the woman!

        Peace

Certainly, Alex. Our Carnival Queens since the mid 1980s have been doing very well in regional competitions. There are some years when Dominica has won some regional crowns back to back. The Cultural Division and the NCC should recognize the efforts of our queens by recording their achievements in a book. There very little we have going for us as a small nation. WE can boast, however, of our natural beauty and the successes of our young ladies in regional queen competitions. Not many other countries in the Caribbean can boast of these attributes and success.

SO piggybacking off of Alex, I would really like to see the pageant committee and Dominica back Miss Shillingford and enter her in the Miss universe pageant. I have felt that our last 3 queens have also showed the talent and ambition as well as knowledge to make in on an international stage and we have not sent a competitor in over 15 years. I think we need to reintroduce the world to Dominica and this can very well be done with Miss Shillingford.

      • June 29, 2013

        Completely AGREE.

        June 30, 2013

I suspect this Miss Dominica may very well get to participate in either the Miss Universe or Miss World pageants during her reign.

After all “money talks in this world!”

        Remember Margaret-Rose Cools-Lartigue?

        Case in point.

Aklex is entitled to his opinion and so is everyone else. It is not the gospel he is preaching you know. There is no accounting for taste and that is a good thing so it is pointless arguing, who was/is the best queen ever. We all have our favourite but to me they were/are all beautiful. Let it be so and let us rejoice for all of them.

I do not see why you all are on Alex Brunos’s case. I simply think that he was just mentioning some of the queens that did exceptionally well and did have to give a list of all the queens who did well. As the phrase would say “just to mention a few”.

Stop always trying to dig what people are saying to make them look bad. He was just giving some words of encouragement. what does his first line say “there is something unique about of queens” what does that say. He was thinking of everyone. We to mention that after Marcella Larocque-Menal things even changed for the better.

When he said this “If one would conduct a study of our queens achievements in regional competitions – and I might – we may be amazed to see just how imposing they are”, he was talking about all the queens that may have performed regionally and that statement does not only stand for those that he mentioned.

Omission of name does not mean he was not talking about them too. His general statement placed emphasis on all QUEENS.

Alex I think Diane Francis was the one who really set the bar for Marcella and all the others to follow. Our ladies have sure made us proud and we are a force to be reckoned with in the region when it comes to pageants. The other bigger islands still under estimate us as ‘small island people’ but small island ah grow big tings! Congrats to Lassa, we continue to be amazed and delighted by your humility and accomplishments!

YEAH I felt so proud to be Dominican last night at that show…When Lassa did her talent the comments from the crowd was so audibly admiring..One lady said “that is what you call talent” ..I felt so good knowing that she was talking about my representative..Dominicans can be proud.

    • June 29, 2013

I am sorry that you are disappointed Vincy but I was at the show and Lassa was ahead in all the segments. From the get go her poise and confidence.. the way she delivered in every area was phenomenal….lets be fair.
She had competition is several segments but the ladies who were just as good eg. in talent did not stick up in the interview or the evening wear Lassa was consistently of high standard..Even in the swimwear Miss SVG won..Lassa carried her swimwear with more elegance.
