2013 Jaycees Queen Leslassa, being crowned by last years winner, fellow Dominican, Nadira-Lando

Miss Dominica 2013, Leslassa Shillingford Armour, took her tally of regional crowns so far, to two, when she was announced winner of   the Jaycees Queen Show 2013 at just about 1.00 am on Saturday August 3, 2013.

Armour-Shillingford won from a field of eleven competitors at the regional pageant in Antigua which featured a bevy of beauties from around the Caribbean and as far afield as the United States.

The Dominican “beauty with brains” who recently captured the Miss Carival title in St. Vincent, copped awards for Best Interview, Best Swim-wear, Best Performing Talent and  Miss Photogenic

First runner-up is Miss Antigua and second runner-up is Miss Anguilla.

Armour-Shillingford was crowned by last year’s winner of the Jaycees competition, Miss Dominica 2012,  Nadira Lando.

Leslassa recently captured the 2013 Miss Carival title in St Vincent walking away with the awards for Ms. Photogenic, Best Talent, Best Evening Wear and Best Inteview.

In a recent interview with DNO, Armour-Shillingford’s chaperone Carla Armour,  said that just like in Antigua, Leslassa is prepared for her next regional pageant, the Miss Caribbean Culture Pageant in Nevis on August 5th.

Armour has urged the public to to keep Leslassa in their prayers and encouraged them to show their support.

Hi Errol, I had to smile. :) You made sure you wrote your name so they will know who you are since they know you and vice versa. :)
I read of her participation in the Queen Show on DNO. Was too busy for the weekend and did not access DNO but I thought of her and wondered how she placed.
I saw her grand-aunt over the weekend in Toronto and was happy to hear that she won. We spoke about her successes.
Now, do not ask her :) for she may not remember who it was since we were at a gathering and many others were present. On the other hand, she may remember.
You know who I am but will not divulge my name. When we see I will tell you. Keeping you under suspense. :) Have a great evening/day.

She is definitely one of the best if nit the best we have seen. We have seen very good and exciting ladies like Sandra Brown, Dianne Francis, the baptist lady from Portmouth (zicack). Leslassa is definitely a gem. A culmination of beauty, brains, social skills and intelligence. I see great things in her future. No crystal ball required.

Isn’t it the same Leslassa,Dominicans gave so much pressure because she had deservedly won the Miss Dominica title? Of course its Leslassa!!! Everyone is now praising because she has succeeded.
Lesslassa, from the beginning i saw you as queen material and you certainly have not disappointed. Thanks for withstanding the savage and wicked tongues of your fellow men. You proved you were way above their ignorance and triumphed. Continue to believe in yourself and the confidence you exhume, the sky is the limit. You are young, talented, brave and intelligent, attributes that can only help you soar towards the moon. Continue to believe in yourself and good luck in your future pageants. If you won Jaycees, Nevis should be a walk over… just believe.

I am not I was about to say the same but in different words, this young lady from the word go represented, intellectual, and beauty and in all honesty that’s what we needed. Not just people with beauty and lacking intellectual capacity. As far as am concerned she should go to the Miss Universe/Ms World pageant.

      August 6, 2013

I understand your comment, however it’s not everybody who was against her. You also have to take into consideration at the local level people will have their favourites and be upset. This is no longer a national competition, and I’m sure she is happy to have the country and even naysayers rally around her. I know Leslassa very well and her family, I don’t think they’re still hanging on to something that even Carla knows goes with the territory. Lighten up, it’s a pageant and really isn’t that serious in the grand scheme of things going on globally.

We salute your Majesty for making us in HarlemNetown Community and us Dominicans very very proud. I watched the show and you were so very great and absolutely confident and consistent throughout. While you are not invincible you are indeed very difficult to beat. We in Harlem hope that an effort is made to have you as our representative on either MISS WORLD or MISS UNIVERSE…it is about time that our powers that be make that effort. WE had made such a call for another Harlem Born Record Breaking Pageant Icon Leandra Lander yet no one listened.

Which other country would you compare Dominica to? Who said Dominica is poor? I dare anyone state that Dominica is poor. So now that she has won and worn the crown as Dominica’s queen, does that now elevate Henry to local royalty and by extension having won and worn Miss Jaycees Caribbean queen crown, does it also mean that he’s now become Caribbean Royalty? The author of this article must have been or perhaps fell asleep during the results reading. Professional journalism is done by ensuring what one publishes is always 1000% and spot on and correct.

You omitted to mention that Leslassa also won best “performing talent” in addition to “Miss Photogenic”, and the other two categories you mentioned.

You also got the final placings incorrect, as Miss Antigua was First runner up and won best “evening wear”, as opposed to St Vincent & the Grenadines as you stated. Similarly, Anguilla was Second runner not Third runner up as you noted.

Remember you’re not only publishing articles for just Dominica or the Caribbean region but also further afield internationally as well, hence the importance of accurate information reaching the eyes of readers.

CONGRATULATIONS Miss Dominica” Leslassa and I believe there must be something in the tasty water over in Dominica, as year after year, we keep showcasing absolute top calibre delegates.

    * People have suggested this before and I’m going to reiterate this point of view again, as I too believe it’s high time some sort of gallery or mini museum is erected in Dominica showcasing each and every one of the previous highly successful “Miss Dominicas” (won 2 or more) regional pageants, depicting when they began (while little girls at school, to regional achievements and afterwards their career paths they’ve chosen or are still endeavouring to get to via Higher Education.*

These achievements may not mean much to some but in my book they are and should be celebrated as part of our very rich and dynamic cultural fabric that the world sits back and gaze with awesome wonder at our natural gifts we possess. Tourist would certainly enjoy learning about this part of our cultural longevity too. Well done & god bless Leslassa you did yourself proud, your island and of course family and friends too!

Hopefully, you do get to represent us in the international arena at the “Miss Universe” & “Miss World” Pageants later this year. :-D

Incidentally, does anyone know whether Dominica does have local franchises for “Miss Universe” & “Miss World” pageants?

Admin: Thank you for your observations. We were monitoring the live internet stream and unfortunately the quality of the signal dropped drastically just as the results were being announced and so we could hear only snippets of what was being said which accounts for the inaccuracy of that information. This was corrected seconds afterwards though. You would have had to refresh your page to see the change. Incidentally, we did not state that Anguilla was third runner-up. We said third PLACE which is the same as second runner-up. However, we do appreciate your observations.
