Live audience TV show to feature local culture, music and more

Starting this week, Dominican television viewers will have the privilege of viewing a live television program which showcases local culture, cuisine, talent and products.

Spearheaded by Val Cuffy, ‘The Conch Shell’ will be hosted by a local media practitioner Karishma Matthew, and will run for an hour on a bi-weekly basis from May 6 on SAT Telecoms.

Cuffy, who spoke at the launch of the program at the Old Mill on Tuesday morning, described the show “as an art, entertainment, culture program that will feature the works and the discussions of Dominica’s top performers both in the field of music and culture.”

According to him, the program will feature local videos, clips, acts and performances from local groups among others. The Conch Shell will involve discussions such as the history of Dominica’s culture, the religious part that plays in the development of the culture of society.

“It opens up the avenues wide…” Cuffy said. He also welcomed the idea of partnering with other media companies to air the program on the cable network. He said that this would be all in the collective view of promoting Dominica’s culture.

Meanwhile, Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence, who addressed the press launch, said that the Cultural Division welcomes the initiative.

“Programs like this one Conch Shell, which was initiated by Bulls Eye, Events Plus, Cee Media and Karishma Matthew, programs like these have to be commended because they too help with the general promotion of the marketing of the art of culture…” Lawrence said.

Lawrence said that the media has a very important role to play in cultural promotion.

“Sometimes we view the media too much as maybe just providing news… we have to see the media too as cultural organizations not simply transmitting news but personally I see media too as cultural institutions which can help to promote culture and when you have an initiative like that on television, that’s another role that television can play in helping to promote out culture,” Lawrence said.

The Conch Shell was made possible through partners and sponsors which include Cee Media, MVB ,SAT Telecoms and Dominica Brewery and Beverages Limited, among others.

The first season of The Conch Shell will run until July end. Re-runs will be aired in August and a new season will begin in September.  The show will be viewed on SAT’s Channel 09 at 7:30 p.m.

The Conch Shell also has a Facebook page, which can be accessed via http://www.facebook.com/TheConchShell

Why a creative idea as a talk show never really cross their minds? It will get the youths more involve in being a part. Everything don’t have to be base on culture, we must learn to think outside of the box of nature and culture. Let’s get more creative and become a people part of the 21st century move. It would be pretty interesting to watch and see a talk show that addresses issues we are dealing with in Dominica and youths as part of a global world.

If you noticed the people make up part of the Conch Shell, so I assume that will be part of it. Lets not be too quick to make statements like this. Support the initiative..
