On Saturday October 17th 2015 Dominicans in the Tri State area were treated to a cultural extravaganza at the 13th annual Madam Wob Dwiyet USA 2015 pageant organized by the Dominica Emerald Organization of New Jersey.

This show was held at the Italian American Club at 1976 Valley Avenue in Scotch Plains New Jersey.

The event started with a bang as the beautiful contestants were ushered into the hall by the pulsating drums of the Lapo Kabrits band. The audience was treated to a show of extremely high standard and a flavor that is unique to this pageant.

The winner of this year’s pageant was Colette Ambo who resides in the Bronx New York and represented Salisbury.

Ambo swept all three categories of best Talent, best Wob and best Interview.

Lucia Jeffrey out of Queens New York represented Colihaut and copped the 1st runner up spot.

Nina Edwards out of Montclair New Jersey took the 2nd runner up spot and represented Wesley.

There were performances from Alison Peltier of Boston representing Point Mitchell and Nakisha Joseph who lives in Irvington New Jersey and represented Wesley. The common theme among the contestants was – Dominica will Rise Again.

The crowd was touched by a great liturgical dance by Justina Henderson to the song, ‘We Shall Overcome.’

They were treated to the great vocals and steel pan music of DNA, a band by Athenia Henderson of Giraudel and Devon Atherley of Trinidad. DNA had everyone on their feet dancing to the popular pop and Latin rhythms.

The crowd was excited to have for the first time in a live performance Al Jahmal Burnette of Jingle Jam Entertainment as Ma Buttercup and Rapunzel. He brought the house down!! Many people complained the two segments of Jingle Jam was just not enough. Ma Buttercup will definitely be returning to the Madam Wob Dwiyet USA show in the future.

Everywhere you look Dominica’s culture was on display from Ti Matadors to the guests attending the shows dressed in their beautiful cultural wear. The show was co-hosted by Justina Henderson the DEONJ Madam Wob Dwiyet North America; Bernard Sylvester and Kelly Thomas, President of DEONJ and she was also Madam Wob 2011. It was a great atmosphere where Dominicans could enjoy local foods, meet their friends and enjoy the Dominican Independence celebration away from home.

Many thanks to our general sponsors; Garraway Hotel, Gabriel Christian Law offices, Joseph Tax Service, RJ Dental, Old Stone Bar and Grill and many other individual and groups who sponsored the contestants.

The organizers are very pleased at the quality of the show and are looking forward to 2016 where we will have winners from pageants all over the US and Canada compete for the title of Madam of Madam Wob Dwiyet North America.

The Dominica Emerald Organization of New Jersey has been in existence since 1998 and has hosted the longest running Wob Dwiyet pageant outside of Dominica. The Executive of DEONJ is Kelly Thomas President, Hannarose Lambert – Vice President, Treasurer – Jules Edwards, Vadshire Dupuis – Secretary, Angela Sylvester – Pageant Coordinator/PRO, Committee Members Joan Dupuis and Bernard Sylvester, Entertainment Chair – Joseph Lambert and Daisy Grant Timothy serves on the Entertainment Committee

Happy Independence Dominica.
