Dominica’s 2011 carnival programme will be officially launched on Saturday, February 12th with a massive street parade on the streets of Roseau and an action-packed show at Carnival City, Pottersville .

The opening parade and show for Mas Domnk 2011 kicks off at 3: 00 p.m. from Victoria Street and will move along the Roseau Bayfront right through to Carnival City for a programme of activities.

The streets of Roseau will be transformed into a huge carnival atmosphere with the participants and masqueraders parading a mix of carnival forms and moving along the streets to the music of lapo kabwit, steel band, live music and sound systems.

The parade will highlight a range of advertising floats, costume bands, traditional masquerade groups, and the color and splendor of Dominica’s carnival.

At the end of the parade the revelers will move to Carnival City to join carnival troupes and performers for an evening of speeches and entertainment that will herald the start of the 2011 carnival celebrations in Dominica.

The official programme will include speeches by Ministers of Government and the Mayor of the City of Roseau, as well as officials from the Dominica Festivals Committee and headline sponsor, LIME. The entertainment package will include performances from traditional carnival troupes, presentations by contestants and competitors of the various shows for the carnival season, a special presentation on the Tale of Carnival Costumes by the Roseau Cultural Group, displays by Flag wavers and performances by several calypsonians including reigning calypso monarch, King Caressa.

Master of Ceremonies (MC) is expected to be Val “Young Bull” Cuffy.

Mas Domnik 2011 is dubbed “The Real Mas” because it is considered the last remaining bastion of true authentic masquerade forms in the Caribbean. The festivities will run from February 12 through to March 8 with a number of signature events beginning with the Opening Parade and will include the Ole Mas Festival on February 24, Soca Monarch Competition on February 25, Pan Savann (steel band competition) on March 1, National Queen Show on March 4th, the Calypso Monarch Competition on March 5, Dimanche Gra Way Lay with kiddies carnival and DJ Clash on March 6, J’Ouvert on March 7 and parade of bands and street jump-up on Carnival Monday and Tuesday, March 7 and 8.

The season also includes Princess Show, Miss Teen Dominica, Junior Calypso Monarch Competition, the Mas Camp and Stardom Tents and other events. Several villages and towns such Portsmouth, Mahaut, St. Jospeh, Grand Bay and Marigot will host their own carnival programs

Mas Domnk 2011 is organized by the Dominica Festivals Commission with events coordination by the Carnival Development Committee.  The Government of Dominica is the main sponsor while telecommunications firm LIME is the headline sponsor.

Given all the disturbing issues, I think the PM should make his outburst just as he did for National Day of Community Service and declare that we should pray and fast during that period for the next 3 years. Dominica needs prayers. Satan has taken over. Too much acquiring of wealth and greed in our land. We have a constitutional crisis and we need to fix our country for the next three years.

A few days before the opening of Dominica’s Carnival, I asked: Have the Queen Contestants been sponsored? What are their sponsors? Is there a website to view information on Dominica’s Carnival 2011? Finally, Is carnival one of the things that is being taken to the ” next level”? Or is it being left behind because of its current appearance?

Somebody please help this Dominican carnival lover, a Carnival baby, a Dominican in the Diaspora with the answers to those question that I asked. Thanks!!!

Let the soca monarch trophy be the “ARROW SOCA TROPHY” IN HONOR OF THE MAN HIMSELF, the late “ARROW”, Alphonsus Phonsie Cassell.

I believe that this would have to be the job of Monsfest – Montserrat Festival, which have already name the festival Arrowfest. But please remember we too have Dominica who we could name Soca Monarch after. I am not discounting the contribution of the Late Alphonsus Arrow Cassell.
