Dr. Anthony ‘Mighty Gabby’ Carter, a Barbadian calypsonian and songwriter, known for hits like ‘Jack’ and ‘Boots’, is to perform at the third edition of Showdown Mas Camp, carded for this Thursday at 8:00 pm at the Harlem Plaza.

Dr. Carter, an official Cultural Ambassador for Barbados, said at a press conference on Wednesday that he is “proud” to be back in the Nature Isle, and thanked the Mas Camp organizers for the opportunity to perform.

“I feel proud to be back in Dominica,” the calypsonian, a close friend of late Prime Minister Rosie Douglas, said. “I want to ensure that Mas Camp itself, with the kind of cast that they have, will give a very good account of themselves, and I mean at the highest level of calypso—not just in Dominica, but in the Caribbean. And, I want to thank the committee for inviting me to come to Dominica to perform.”

Carter is the youngest calypsonian to win the calypso crown in Barbados at age 19 in 1968 and went on to win the Calypso king title again in 1969, 1976, 1985, 1999, 2000 and again in 2010. He has penned over 700 songs and was awarded Folk Singer Of The Year in 1977, 1978, 1979

He has been writing and singing calypso music for over 40 years, and is known for his satirical songs criticizing politicians and cultural trends.

Meanwhile, Public Relations Officer for Showdown Mas Camp, Cecil Moses, spoke of an ‘ole mass’ theme for this Thursday’s segment of the show.

“This week we are doing ‘ole mass’… We want folks to come out and have a good time,” he stated. “You’ve got your sensay? Walk with it, you know. Come out to enjoy yourself. Come out to play Carnival. Bring your whistles.”

He assured patrons that the event would start “bang on time,” with happy hour from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm.

“We kicking off at 6:30 with happy hour, and we moving up until 8 o’clock. As always, we’re going to be having the bar open,” he stated.

Moses went on to provide the outline of events for Thursday night’s show.

“As always, the calypsonians are going to be coming and giving a great showing of themselves,” he said. “We have guests artistes, Brother Gabby’s going to come and perform for us and we’re gonna close off our show with our calypsonians who are going to be at the semis, in the names of Boople, and King Dice, and Sharisse D… Checko’s going to be closing, along with Boople and King Dice.”

Gabby is one of the most celebrated calypso singer and song writer in the world. His repertoire resonates with the Caribbean people, his lyrics interpret the struggles and life of the ordinary man and woman and his melodious voice and rhythm are food for the soul. One of his best compositions “Everton” is not a calypso, but this song strikes at the heart of the struggles of the Barbadian and Caribbean people for justice, independence and development. We Dominicans should celebrate and give thanks that we have a champion like Gabby to tell the world what is in our hearts.

Good work Mas Camp. Gabby is a wonderful addition to the show. Great performer, talented song writer and our calypso will be better off for his presence.
But DNO, Gabby is not a doctor.
