Three-time Port Calypso King Peter ‘De Mighty Pigtail’ Letang has called on younger calypsonians in Dominica to begin writing their own songs.

He made that call during an interview with Dominica News Online (DNO) on Monday.

With his song ‘Witty’, Letang was crowned at the Dominica Air and Seaport Authority (DASPA) competition held on Saturday.

“Younger calypsonians need to start writing their own songs,” he said. “It might not be a great song the first time around, but just keep doing it; you can get help from other people…”

He continued, “When you sing what is yours I want to believe that there is a lot more feeling going into it.”

According to him, introducing music in all schools on the island will also help in that regard.

Upon winning the crown the third time, an elated Letang said, “It felt great, the first time was nice, they say when it’s nice, do it twice, so I did it twice and a third time.”

Abel ‘Checko’ Jno Baptiste secured the first place while ‘Peyo’ grabbed the second spot.

Other participants include; The Intruder, Superizer, Mighty Souff, Mighty Assmiss, Energizer, Lulu, Mighty Ro-Ro and Mighty jack

Meantime; Letang sends a message for Carnival lovers, “Let’s have a violent free Carnival season.”

De “Mighty Pigtail” is very. very correct, I have been saying this all along, people like Karessa and Checker etc, write their songs, and that is a great accomplishment, when you can write and perform at the same time, it is just a encouraging, and that is great coming from a talented, and extremely handsome young man.

I am surprised that a musician would make that statement. Sir can you play every instrument there is? My God you actually sound foolish. You of all people should know that not every singer can write. Gimme a break bro.

Congratulations on your win …. and personally …. I find your calypso name to be just a fun one.

i see nothing wrong with his statement. its true… there is a more feeling of accomplishment when an artist wins a competition based solely on his work. i have the utmost respect for calypsonians who can win a crown with a song that they wrote or co-wrote. the karessa is on of these calypsonians. i’m not saying that he has to sing only his songs but at least he writes, performs and wins with his own sometimes. mighty pigtail you are right more encouragement should be given to these artists especially the younger ones.

Come on Peter let’s be realistic. Not everyone is fortunate enough to be exposed to and have access to the resources you were blessed with to develop the skills in writing their own songs. In addition to the comment which is well accepted what resources can you identify to point these youths to in order to develop the talent? Are these resources accessible? Are the cost reasinable for equal access to all? I think answers to these question woukdnhelo direct the youths.

Also you and you family write songs for others, are unwilling to stop writing for those you write for and instead teach them how tincture?

What’s wrong with the name…It’s calypso…its satire. What you want his name to be? Mr Handsome? Young Thug? Lil Peter? Honestly when I saw his name I just laughed. You’ll missing the point…

But you not making any sense. You writing for calypsonians. Why don’t you tell them go write their own song. Writing is a gift. You can’t expect every body to have that gift. You either have it or don’t… Stop being ridiculous. Lead by your comments. Stop writing for calypsonian

Fly on the Wall! You not making sense. He is trying to encourage younger calypsonians to write songs. That is how we can elevate the artform.

My sentiments Fly on the wall. Make no sense. Everyone have different talents, and what of someone with a great singing voice who just can’t compose a song. Will we allow them to be robbed of their talent? Oh! please .

seems you cannot read. he says “YOUNGER CALYPSONIANS” should begin writing their own songs. are we that dumb. It does not mean he cannot write for a senior calypsonian. As far as I understand, he wants the younger calypsonians to experience writing songs and get a feel of their own material.
