New features revealed for Dominica carnival 2011

The Dimanch Gwa Bouyon and Pan Savann competitions are among the new features for carnival in Dominica.

The March 6 Bouyon event is an initiative of the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) and is to lead patrons into the Carnival Monday rivalry, Nathalie Clarke-White, DFC Events Coordinator has announced.

“What we are trying to do this year is get a DJ clash and dance-off competition, coupled with a big band to lead us into the Carnival Monday and Tuesday, so we can now come into the carnival city, lime from about 3 o’clock until,” she said at the media launch for Carnival 2011 at Fort Young Hotel Thursday night.

The Pan contest, scheduled for March 1, will see pan groups competing in the senior and intermediate levels. “It’s going to be in our carnival city. There are 13 pan groups, out of which four are going to compete at the senior level, and four at the intermediate level,” Clarke-White said.

Carnival organisers say they want Jouvert to run from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. this year.

But the message for Dominicans this carnival season is to keep the peace.

“My hope is that we will experience a carnival totally devoid of violence. If this is to be achieved, keeping the peace is everyone’s business,” said Justina Charles, Minister for Culture and Youth Affairs.

Charles has urged youth to “exercise good judgment” and abstain from negative activity.

The ‘Real Mas’ 2011 will run from February 13 to March 8.

I am constantly annoyed when I hear about the Trinidadian Events Coordinator. Is there not anyone in Dominica who can do that job??? Will a Dominican be allowed to lead any thing in Trinidad???
For example; it is FORBIDDEN for Caribbean Airlines(BWIA) to employ a non-Trinidadian.All jobs in the Bahamas are for natives first. Only in Dominica that … happens. These are the kind of things that UWP and the Unions, etc. should be making lots of noise about!!! 8-O

I don’t agree with you… I face similar comments……I am Dominican but work in a senior position out of Dominica. We need to stop this nonsense and see each other as Caribbean brothers and sisters contributing both the the islands we work within and being able to help our families back home.

Yes indeed Dominicans are leading things in Trinidad. In very high places as well. Herbert Volney recently resigned as a judge in TT and is Now a minister in the Government. Reginald Armour is another very highly placed Dominican in Trinidad. Dr Peters was the head of the University of of Trinidad and Tobago up till he left to head West Indies Cricket. It is totally senseless to bash Mis Clarke because she has some connections to Trinidad

just so you know, the position was posted LOCALLY and abroad. is just that no dominican did feel capable or wasn’t willing to accept the position(not that i blame them allu can be too ungrateful and mal palent) so as long as miss trinidad doing what they paying her to do give her a break.

more importantly the move back to 3:00am for the jouvet sounding good them new tings too making my feel i going to take my foot when i rach home for the val

look on the brighter side of life doh stop at where the person from see the good they doing

I sincerely hope that our wonderful people can enjoy themselves responsibly this year during the entire carnival season. Moreover, I am appealing to each and every one to enjoy the real mas without violating others. And trust me this is very much possible.
