New song to assist in relief efforts

dominica strongA group of artistes, headed by Cornell Phillip, has come together in a collaborative effort to produce a song, Dominica Strong, to aid in the relief effort post Erika.

Other artistes in the effort include Carlyn XP, Michele Henderson, Tasha P, Heston, Omalie 360, Devine Songz, Aima Moses, Knutkase and Atunyah. The song is titled “Dominica Strong” written by Carlyn Xavier Phillip, composed and produced by Cornell Phillip. Other musicians included Jervon Henderson on Bass and Chad Augustine on Guitar.

A video has also been made directed and edited by Jawanza Stuart. The song and video will be freely distributed via social media together with a link to the official funding site for relief of the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica.

The artists urge all who receive the song to contribute to the cause. They also encourage everyone to freely distribute the song to create awareness to the fund raising effort.

All involved have donated their time, effort and talent completely free of charge and in some cases have made financial contributions to the project. 100% of the proceeds will go to the Erika relief effort.

On Thursday,  August 27  The Nature Isle of the Caribbean, Dominica, was devastated by the passing of tropical storm Erika.

This small island was brought to its knees. The islands electricity grid went down, the water supply was cut off, telecommunications was disrupted.

The main city, town and villages were unreachable due to major flooding and landslides causing severe damage to roads, bridges and the general infrastructure.

Most disturbing was the tremendous loss of life when the village of Petite Savanne suffered the worst blow.

The Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, in his address to the nation couple days later commented “The visual damage I saw today, I fear, may have set our development process back by 20 years.”

Donation to the relief effort can be made at: http://www.gofundme.com/DA-erikaReliefFund

Beautiful music! Hats off to these artists for taking the time to compile such a great song. We should all be grateful for people who find a way to contribute to the healing and re-building of our nation in which ever way they see it fit. More strength to my brothers and sisters in Dominica and abroad. Love always wins and music will always be therapeutic to many seeking peace of mind, hope and resolve. Jah bless DA! The odds are against us but we will prevail with God on our side…………….. SHORWAZZ……….. Blessup!

    @ Cornell et al.

I want to respectfully say that I appreciate and applaud your collaborative efforts.

However, while I appreciate the reggae genre of music when it’s tastefully done, I feel that this production was either lacking in or had too much of something. I cannot put my finger on it since I’m not a musician. I only go by what my ears like. And while I again say I appreciate the efforts of the artists, i think maybe too many of them were on the mic, not complementing each other’s voices, but at times almost sounding like they were trying to ‘over-ride’ each other.

Mr. Cornell Phillip. Sir, it is my understanding that you are brilliant at what you do and well respected through-out the Caribbean for your work. I respectfully suggest that the sound be re-mixed and this time only have a duet (male and female) and then somebody to do the rap portion.

    All the best.

I guess we are in deep trouble as a nation indeed. Failure to lift each other up in anything. Let me do my part -This song is awesome! The vocals are great. The collaboration is to be commended as well as the cause. The great talent is obvious, the voices are simply beautiful. The best part which the devil is mad about – it gives thanks and praises to the Most High God!! Yay. In everything give thanks. Dominicastrong!

All of these countries in the Caribbean a sub developing countries just like Dominica, and have to reserve funds also for their country for we are in the hurricane season. How much help are we expecting them to give. We have to look to develop countries and Nations. Dominica need serious help so it could be rebuilt. If all you do want put Dominica up for sale. Let a colony or nation come and buy it. For Dominica is the only country that hasn’t move on since it gain independence almost 37 yes ago.

I think they did a great job! It is so sad to come on here and see such negativity and pointing fingers. Come on my fellowmen, grow up. if you have nothing good to say, keep silent. It’s very disappointing and unprofessional to read some of this post. Thank God for sparing you through the storm and find something productive to do with you time, instead of always criticizing the efforts of others. Dominican God is trying to tell us Somethin, take heed and let God be the judge. Find something uplifting to say, please the world is watching us. I know we can do better, rise up from this negative and critical spirit and be productive and purposeful. I pray that we all find peace and live in unity with each other. Love my people.

Boy my DA people miserable! These comments…smh. We cant get ourselves to put things into proper prospective. In the midst of devastation and DEATH we’re bitching over the quality of a song over the other. Songs produced by artist of their own time and resources. To raise awareness and funds, bring comfort, and inspire resolve in the wake of the biggest natural and human disaster in nearly 20 years. UNBELIEVABLE!!

“What God has joined together no one puts asunder” This means the same as: what God is at work with no one can stop Him.

Continue steadfastly with your work, guys and girls; do not allow negative critics to faze you–they are not from God–but do not forget to give Him, the honor for your success; He will give you the exaltation

Too bad that I cannot hear the song, my computer sound is not working–don’t know why.

A group of a few of Dominicas finest use their talent, time and effort to help Dominica and DOMINICANS have it like its a competition and political. I live in the USVI and I can attest to the high level of respect the region has for artists like Cornell Phillip, Michele Henderson, Carlyn XP, Heston and Devine (Tortola still talks of she short singer from Dominica). Stay strong team, this is a very admirable effort. A none Dominican say so.

    • September 14, 2015

You have your rights to express your like and dislikes so do others, no one is making it political nor a compitition, people just expressing their rights what they like and dislike, politics is what taking place with the donations, when labor people saying who should get and who should not, when they dress in their red colours including the Prime Minister wife handing out donations, taking photos with those they giving the donations and saying that it is for her husband and herself, this is politics, not people expressing which song they like, some of you people who are pretending to be none political are more political than those who express their opinions about politics

    September 14, 2015

Last i checked this was not about competition. You see that is why we have to face so much hard times because we still not getting the point. This is just an attempt to show love and reach out to others. No money making no politics nothing. You would think at this time we would praise those who help rather than criticize. That’s why some of you all dominicans will never move up in life because you all full of negativity. It doesn’t take politics or Skerrit or Linton to bring down this country. The people already doing a good job as it is. Shame on u all.

    September 14, 2015

Cornel….take a page from ‘we are the world’. This production is way below your standards. All the artist have very good voices. However the composition of the song is poor. Everyone is screaming over each other; and it songs like Carlyn is trying to dominate the mic. Lyrically the song is also very weak….but I guess the reason for this is due to the time constraint. I know that a man like you normally puts a lot of effort and time in his work. I would have also preferred a more local genre rather than the Jamaican reggae. The song sounds like another immitation ‘Drunk in Love’ by Carlyn.

However on positive note it was impressive to get all this talent to come together…..especially the lights of Michelle Henderson. I would suggest that you bring together the same group with a few additions and subtractions to produce another.

Cornell I’m not feeling it, the first song I heard from Jerd Dossett and Ronald is way better and an inspiration, it relates more to the disaster, each time I listen to Like a thief in the night it brings tears to my eyes

I have four Dominican tenants and lawd I never seen so much negativity in life. I don’t know the singers but this is a really great song and it shouldn’t be linked to politics or competition. but Cornell’s track is ok….

Hmm, I heard Cornell say on Matt’s program this morning that all receipts from this song will be channeled to the Govt. of Dominica because the artistes do not want this to be political. Cornell, are you really that naive or innocent? Nothing could be more political than the Govt. of Dominica. I would be more impressed if you had all said to Mr. Skerrit to keep the $500,000 he recently promised to the musicians of Dominica and use it for disaster relief instead.
PS. Sorry guys, I’m sure you mean well but your song is not a patch on Ronald Charles’! gem.

Splendid delivery…Y Mr. Phillip wish not to call his own touch? Y everything the GOVERNMENT? Who’s overseeing the monies…r there n e projects which the Artists dem selves can come together and pilot? If we r looking solely to Government for a better DA then, we r doomed. It start with us as a team. where’s the counsellors for the wounded, afflicted, mourning….where’s the psychiartrist…
who’s in constant touch with the mothers and fathers who lost their kids, loveones etc? Always have a positive reason for your cause…there’s a lot that need to be done, and Government alone cannot get it done…if Dominica has to rise again that means we r at the groundlevel and who always look out for those on the groundlevel? JAH. Remember Erika’s devastation was an act of JAH. As I said before, if we gonna rise we have to attain the cause of our weeping. Until we radiate that vision there’s no rising…Remember the focus is on the people…seek my people, seek.
