Norman Letang clarifies Stardom King win

The crown was won by "De Professor"
The crown was won by “De Professor”

Chairman of the Stardom Calypso Tent, Norman Letang of the Stardom Tent has brushed aside comments made by some following the crowning of newcomer Sheldon “De Professor” as Stardom King of the Tent on Wednesday night.

Many had opined that a newcomer cannot compete for the title, but Letang told Dominica News Online (DNO) the such claims are untrue.

“There is no rule or law saying that Calypso newcomers cannot perform at the Monarch of the Tent competition,” he stated. “It used to be that way few years ago but we have shoved that.”

He noted that any Calypsonian who is a member of the Tent is eligible to compete.

“Checko won his first year in the Tent, so De Professor isn’t the first person,” Letang noted.

Meanwhile, Letang stated that the Tent has been having a very good year.

“It has been growing and every Tent has been bigger than the last,” he noted.

Letang revealed that last night’s Tent was one of the biggest.

“I expected that crowd, I knew we were going to have a huge crowd,” he noted. “Most important of all the show was very enjoyable.”

The show took place at the Sisserou Hotel.

De Professor, 19, was able to impress the judges to beat 18 other competitors for the crown.

He has been crowned Junior Monarch three times and is one of the Calypsonians who will be aiming to dethrone King Dice on Saturday night at the Calypso final.

What Norman Letang should comment on is the extra $10 we had to pay at the gate, to come into an event where you couldnt see the stage at all. Because it was so crowded and hot. You could swear is football I was playing, sweating like a pig in my nice dandan. Stardom has to look into making patrons more comfortable at these shows. The bar was disorganised, felt like I was begging to spend my money. I did not stay to the end, I was very unhappy with the atmosphere.

Be fair. It is ridiculous and discriminating to state that a newcomer cannot compete for the calypso title. It is a good thing this old ruling has been quashed for good.
If you ask me, it is downright silly that a newcomer is ineligible to compete.
He has what it takes to compete and considering he was three times crowned Junior Monarch.
Congratulations young man. Go for it! I wish you success in the calypso final.

I love calypso even if I dont go to the tents. However my observation is that the “politics of calypso” is encouraging a war between Dice on one side and Professor on the other. probably seeing Professor as the one with the best chance to probably dethrone the Dice. In comparing both of their premier calypsoes, I think they both present their songs well and melody is great however the lyrics of Professor to me is weak….. focusing too much on one person………….. as opposed to maybe an institution. Looking forward to a great calypso final.

Why let him compete if knowing that new comers should not be crowned. Well if the young man performed and wins give himm his crown. Everthing for you all is a problem.

This is totally rubbish by you alas ,good vibes and all you waste of time contributors to DNO.
The man advertised…You all no problems
The man performed …You all had no problems
The Man won…. It’s now an issue
Pure bull…..Is it the subject that’s the problem?
Or bold face disrespect for other people’s talent and competence
Norman Letang and Wadix told the media of the bat this ‘first timer’ participating in the monarch is a thing of the past. Checko was a first timer when he went into the finals with AM/PM and won the Stardom crown
    Was it an issue then?
Who are you all to decide for Stardom Tent management who should take part in their competition.
    NONE OF YOU
Stop hating on the youth and embrace him.
He has brought a crowd and fan base to the calypso
    Is he too…

As chairman of stardom you should acknowledge some of mas champ artists who performed at your tent. How sad! Where is the love and unity Christ showed us. Life is short let us be the best we can.

what i don’t understand is whether he is new or old to the tent does it affect his ability to perform? No so why is it a problem if he wins being a new comer? this craziness does not make sense to me….he performed and if he deserves the win give me the crown….Congratulations De Professor
