Prominent businessman highlights social and historic significance of new movie theatre

Inside the Emerald Movie Theatre

Proprietor of Prevo Cinemall, Norris Prevost has said that the new Emerald Movie Theatre is a major contribution to the social and entertainment life in Dominica.

Prevost told Dominica News Online (DNO) in a recent interview, that the theatre is of world class standard and congratulated the young entrepreneurs who have ventured to reopen it.

Dominica’s first cinema (Carib Cinema) was established in the 1950’s but closed down after Hurricane David in 1979. It was reopened in 1994 but closed again in 2007.

“Let me congratulate Emerald Movies for doing a remarkable job in re-establishing the cinema at the Prevo Cinemall. This is part of the original Carib Cinema that was established in the 1950’s. When my group bought the Carib Cinema building, we transformed it into the Prevo Cinemall,” Prevo said. “One of our goals was to ensure that we maintained a cinema in the property because we considered the Carib Cinema an important part of the heritage of Dominica. The Carib Cinema is an example of what you call sustainable restoration.”

The theatre seats about 180 people

Prevost said the new Emerald Movie Theatre is a major contribution to social life in Dominica.

“It also is a positive, bold step by young Dominican entrepreneurs. From a business point of view, it’s a great example for business and young businesses should take examples and we, as Dominicans, should big up our young entrepreneurs for some of the businesses that they are doing and we should do everything that we can to patronize them and also to care for that cinema,” the veteran businessman advised.

He continued, “The directors of Emerald Movies meet that bench mark of young men who could be considered model young men in the community and seem to be pitching for high standards. I’m excited about the way they have refurbished and created a whole brand new look in the cinema. From a physical point of view, the new Emerald Movie Theatre is of world class standard, it’s of a standard that would meet in any city in North America.”

Prevost added that it is his hope that the entrepreneurs of the theatre will continue to succeed and grow in providing more entertainment businesses for Dominica.

“It’s a big step they have taken. My hope and my dream is to see them grow to the level where they can multiply; they can open additional screens or they can build their own cinema. That’s what I would like to see – grow their cinema business to the point where there are business and moral examples in terms of entertainment.”

He said both young and old cinema goers are excited and he believes that once Emerald Movies continues at the standard they have begun, the venture is going to be a successful addition to entertainment in Dominica.

Prevost encouraged Dominicans to support this “worthwhile experience for a reasonable price” and include it as part of their regular lifestyle.

What was the point of having Norris speak? … or even mentioned in this article? Absolutely unnecessary . What about the young men who put time and effort in to this? NO MENTION !!!! Do better DNO!

    ADMIN: Your outburst was unnecessary.

You could have just asked a question. The owners do not wish to be identified at this time, if that changes we will seek an interview with them.

Additionally, Norris Prevost is very relevant to the story as he originally reopened the Carib Cinema at Prevo Cinemall paving the way for the current owners.

“It’s about time. Shows the DA is progressing forward.” Great response and observation that our business people step forward and help build our nature island. This government has no clue of socio-economic development and how they merge in embracing everyone towards a thriving economy and country. Dominica under this current failed corrupt Labour government has, over the past 19 years no clue as to what development and benefits are all about to our people and island. This corrupt Labour government and its incompetent immature Odd Minister knows nothing of how to develop this island. There is no obvious strategic plan to follow on this, if it is, then hidden somewhere in a cupboard. However, we hear nothing of Skerrit in the past 19 years articulate the discipline of socio-economic development where the government takes the lead in encouraging the local business sector and international business interests who may wish, want to invest in Dominica. The passport scandal Bobol is a failure

Given the rise of chronic diseases on island, that snack bar needs to be revamped. The sodas and chips high in sodium should be replaced with healthy snacks and drinks. This is where business and civicmindedness needs to comingle and call a shotgun wedding. Great job, nonetheless.

The minister didnt see the amount of people on social media crying about not being able to afford the movies? He didnt see them crying about affording it on their minimum wage? Another thing, look at the snack counter, pure health risk. Not one food there is good for the body, thats a sure road to CNCDs, esp diabetes. DLP want to take credit for a private enterprise opened DESPITE their existence, not because of it. I still commend the people for taking the risk and I wish them well but DLP alas they bankrupt of ideas.

      June 24, 2019

It’s a movie theatre, serving movie theatre snacks. If people are already complaining about affordability like you said, how often do you think that people will be at the movies eating the snacks to send them into diabetic comas and health crisis? It’s not going to do anymore than the road side snack bars, shops and supermarkets are already doing. It’s something nice to bring Dominica into the 21st century with family entertainment while providing jobs. Get a grip Frank! There’s a lot to criticize with the goings on in Dominica, this is not one of them.

The people crying about it being too expensive are those who line up on wednesdays for the red clinic. If you cannot afford it dont go. Simple. Real movie goers know that the local price here is cheaper than what we pay in other countries. Everything is not for everyone. If you cant afford to go then wait until you can download on your laptop Frank. People will always complain about something, especially Dominicans who like free handouts..This article had nothing to do with DLP or UWP. It was about new business and common sense. Regarding the food, noone is forcing you to buy the popcorn or nachos, however, these are foods found in every movie theater on this side of the hemisphere. That is a fact. clearly, you know not much about going to the movie Frank.

Health risk??? That’s so funny… Let’s go to the movies and eat carrot sticks.. And where is DLP coming into this situation? Trust people like you to bring politics into something like this.

what DLP or UWP have to do with the theater???? stupessss… SMH…. everything in Dominica must be about politics?????

Listen! You can’t honestly turn everything into Politics. You’re the only negative comment under here, Please take your negativity and address it to the Prime Minister himself! But for now … Congratulate them or SHUT UP!
When Dominicans finally do something good… Acknowledge it! SMH

      June 24, 2019

clearly you don’t even know your head to your tail. the man is not even a minister. you don’t support movie theatres anywhere in the world (providing that you can afford to travel of course) where in the world to you go to movie theatres to see “healthy foods” as part of their menu options? you are too laughable
