Queen contestant Armour-Shillingford receives sponsorship

Leslassa receives sponsorship cheque from Auto Trade representative

Carnival queen contestant Leslassa Armour-Shillingford is now the third queen contestant to receive full sponsorship for the February 8th pageant.

Armour-Shillingford was sashed Miss Anchorage Hotel and Auto Trade Ltd at an official sashing ceremony held for her at the office of the Dominica Festivals Committee on Friday morning.

Yvonne Armour, Manager of Anchorage Hotel and Dive Centre and mother of the contestant said that Anchorage was proud and privileged to place their commitment and support in the contestant.
“I am totally in awe, I am totally proud, I am totally honoured to represent Anchorage ltd this morning to offer and to commit our sponsorship to Leslassa. We feel it will be money well spent. We have great faith that she will do great things for Dominica” Armour noted.

Carla Armour, chaperone and aunt of Armour-Shillingford also explained that apart from receiving support from corporate businesses they were also attempting to gain sponsorship from the community. Therefore, Leslassa also receive support from Dominica Marine Center, Dr Hazel Ricketts Optical Services Ltd, Elima’s Shop & Bar and Hans all Natural Hair Salon.

The contestant said that she was excited about receiving the sponsorship. “You should expect excellence from me. If I win I will become an ambassador for Dominica,” she stated.

Leslassa Armour-Shillingford joins Daina Matthew of Canefield and Jeanne Royer of Goodwill as the contestants to officially receive full sponsorship for the national carnival queen show slated for 8th February, 2013.

Is there anything else we cans say about this girl other than debate about her hair? I just read an article on another queen contestant who had some serious issues of migration to speak off. Prefer to comment on that than how this girl chooses to wear her hair. She could cut it all of for all I care. who cares???

Well, thats obvious..Its her mom! Has Anchorage sponsored any other queen contestant in the past? All of a sudden they generous. When u have money eh…

      January 7, 2013

Yes they have, 1984! There are many order firm making the money and never sponsor. A company’s focus might be different, it may be sports, it may be culture, it may be a focus on the elderly. We should not be blaming companies for not sponsoring if their efforts is place elsewhere. An example, National Bank of Dominica, they are into sports.

Leslassa you are beautiful and your hair is amazing, I love the way that you style it. keep on being you and perfecting YOU whilst others try to be who they are not. God’s blessing upon you and continue to excel at what you do. To her family, it is great to see you all coming out and supporting her.

    January 6, 2013

The hair is nice natural but the style can change. Nobody saying to straighten it, simply the conros a little wassy. Neat it up or rock the photoshoot swimsuit look. Still natural but conros are too casual in my opinion for this occassion.

Way to Go Lelassa. You are beautiful and I know that you have the intelligence and finesse to go with that beauty. I wish you all the best. Praises to all her sponsors. In this hard economic times, many businesses are counting their every penny. Its good that there businesses who can promote the country’s cultural development.

You know, in these hard economic times, we must congratulate all those good corporate citizens who in spite of the hardship continue to support culture and the arts in Dominica. This is commendable and a very god demonstration of corporate social responsibility.

DNO, second to Lennox Linton, I would named your service “DNO” as personality of the year or for sure New media outlet of the year followed by Q95. However, I do not know if I missed it but you did not name a person/personality for the year 2012. In that regard, I think DNO should consider a partial or full sponsorship of a young lady or event for carnival 2013 in honour of your organization and its many readers.

I look forward to the bold print of DNO Admin below this posts.
    You are welcome.

Fifteen thousand is alot of money for one Firm, so all should chip in something and all the girls can be sposored….still the show will go on….

DNO is becoming very biased. Since new management took over there is no objectivity allowed with comments. Before I used to come here and laugh. The comments used to be hilarious because there was freedom of speech; now you cannot say what you think when its negative. I think sponsoring queens is a waste of money as these sponsors do not get anything back from their investment. Also the whole show should be banned in this day and age..women parading in teenie weenie bikinis! Also natural hair is good but sweetheart you are not in kindergarten so loose the little girl look. for all of you agreeing her hair looks ok, I can see that you don’t work in high fashion like I do. Also that wild crazy afro look just looks lazy like she didnt bother to comb her hair. Don’t hide my comment please..low rating or not..Its still an opinion

    • Jean Zicack
      January 6, 2013

Why is wearing her hair how it naturally grows out of head ‘lazy’? What does she have to to to comb it to your liking?

    • Anonymous
      January 6, 2013

@goodgirl I can see you have no idea what high fashion is about and you heard the term somewhere. Are you telling us that all the successful women and the stars such as jill scott, solange and many other famous black women and their hairdressers dont know about high fashion either? Are you also saying that big woman looks is chemically altered hair or a tight pony tail? I feel sorry for you goodgirl, very very sorry and i am not the only one. Anyway next month is black history month, hope it help you awake from your mental slavery slumber, good luck poor child, you parents and teachers have failed you miserably.

It is unfortunate that in this day and age we as black people still have the Eurocentric perspective that a black woman’s beauty should be defined by relaxed or process hair. In this day and age many top models in the fashion world are rocking their natural hair and have amazing professional jobs such as lawyers, principals etc. It’s unfortunate that the focus is on her hair. I would recommend watching the documentary Good Hair to give you some perspective.

P.S: I believe that every business in DA should be charged a ‘cultural tax’ so we can have all these young ladies sponsored. It’s a bloody shame that people continue to take from the communities of Dominica and not give back when it’s time to promote the country.

I concur . Moreover, It is very inspiring and she sends a very strong message to young women that beauty is from within and your smile brings out your natural beauty and personality not your hair style .

I wish the young lady the young lady the very best.

Maybe it was already said but does someone know how much it costs a girl to participate in a show of that type? Does that mean she becomes the ambassador of the company during the year at no extra charge?
    thanks for response

This delegate is a complete package of beauty (natural ); brain( well spoken and intelligent) andy got natural talent; she being a dancer. She should have been this first to receive sponsorship. In fact with such a dynamic group of delegates; the business community should relish the opportnuity of anyone of these young ambassadors to promote their business even beyond carnival. On a different note; the Queen Show Committee should have more than one trophy on hand as there may be a few ties. History will be made on the night of Friday February 8th; 2013. Leslassa you have my support; I got your back.

  17. Jean Zicack
    January 4, 2013

The article is written as if there was no hope for her to get a sponsor, when they well know that her family’s business would sponsor her. We know she’s gonna win too. She’s light and bright and has a name brand last name. If she doesn’t I’d be astonished.

You mean straighten it to live up to the white ideal of beauty? Are you ******** serious???!!!!!!!!!!

This girl is 100% ALL NATURAL black beauty in all its glory and essence!!!! I support her fully! She has my vote!

Cannot believe how far we are away, still, from emancipation. Very distressing.

    • Jean Zicack
      January 4, 2013

What does “fix the hair” mean? What’s wrong with her hair? Is it because it’s natural? Let me guess, you want her to have a head full of track right? To succumb to white standards of beauty. Some black people have such self hate. Disgusting!!

      • stupes
        January 5, 2013

Whilst i agree that natural hair looks good, there are tons of natural hairstyles to choose from. In the first pic Leslassa does not look like a queen contestant but rather a princess show contestant. NATURAL HAIR DOES NOT MEAN CHILDISH! phttt

    • Michael
      January 4, 2013

Miss. Universe which was held recently had two “baldheaded” girls; St. Kitts had a dreadlocks contestant; Antigua had a dreadlock who also eon The Jaycees Caribbean Queen. All that extension or “horse hair” is not always needed.

I personally love the hairstyle. It is so refreshing to see a young woman with all natural beauty going up for Miss Dominica.

Let us all hope the judges don’t detract from her on the night because she is rocking her “neg” hair. Rock it proudly girl!

      January 4, 2013

Seriously? In 2013, someone would make a low comment like that? The young lady has beautiful, natural hair. She has chosen to style her natural hair in backward twists. What is so wrong with that? Emancipate yourself from mental slavery please.

Is there a problem being natural. There is nothing with this look.

    • Roger Burnett
      January 5, 2013

On the contrary, I applaud Leslassa’s courage and confidence for being true to her own Afro-Caribbean identity. Why do we need to ape a concept of beauty that is foreign to our own?

    • Irie
      January 5, 2013

I happen to love her hair, more of our women should wear their hair natural, this young lady looks radiant and naturally beautiful. You can stay their with your breaking-split-ends-hair-turning-red-dandruff-aplenty perm.
