Regional and international copyright societies discuss royalty collection at regional meeting

McCarthy Marie

President of the Eastern Caribbean Organization of Music Rights (ECCO), Dominican McCarthy Marie, is among representatives of regional and international copyright organizations meeting in Barbados.

While there, Marie will attend two meetings. One is the annual general meeting of the Association of Caribbean Copyright Societies (ACCS), which is made up ECCO and other copyright societies from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad, Suriname and Belize.

The other meeting is being held under the umbrella of SISAC, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers which includes the ACCS, and the American Societies, Ascap, BMI and SESAC as well as British Copyright Society, PRS for Music.

Two key issues expected to be discussed at the ACCS annual general meeting are what Marie says is the low level of copyright compliance in the OECS, and the adoption of a decision for ACCS member countries to lobby their respective governments to institute a quota for the broadcast of local music.

At the SISAC meeting, the regional and international copyright societies will discuss concerns by Anglo-American copyright societies about the level of royalty collections being made on their behalf by the regional societies especially since their music is being widely used on cable TV, broadcast TV and radio, as well as hotels and resorts.

Discussions will also focus on the kind of assistance that SISAC can provide to the regional societies.

These organizations are seeking material assistance in the form of appropriate software for managing the societies’ business, technical assistance in using the software as well assistance in the area of legal training with regard to copyright litigation.
