Seven Educators will grace the stage and compete for the top spot in the first ever ‘She’s Royal’ Inaugural Teachers Pageant on Sunday October 13th 2013 at the Arawak House of Culture.
The contestants are Melinda Ulysses of St. Mary’s Primary School, who was also a participant in this year’s national queen show, Enzinga Darroux of Pierre Charles Secondary, Andria Andrew of Wills Strathmore Stevens, Merlincia Henry of the Convent Preparatory, Delah Gachette of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary, Odessa Elie from Convent High and Nikisha Philbert of the Laudat Primary School.
President of the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) Celia Nicholas, said that the pageant was being introduced in response to requests for something of that nature as part of the DAT’s observance of World Teachers Day.
“As part of the observance of world Teachers day, DAT normally we try to have different activities …So we have to satisfy the demands of every one and there was a request some time ago, that we have something of that nature and Miss Mora (Antoinette Mora) came in and put the icing on the cake,” she said.
Nicholas added that because of the cost, they may not be able to have the pageant every year.
“It is an inaugural pageant and some individuals are hoping that we do it every two years we don’t know about that yet because it is a very expensive venture but in 2015 the Caribbean Union of Teachers will be hosted by the Dominica Association of Teachers. As the Caribbean region of teachers, we meet biannually so this includes counties from the Bahamas right down to Suriname”.
She noted that She’s Royal is a pageant, not a queen show and it is part of their celebration of the 20th observation of World Teachers Day.
World Teacher’s Day has been inaugurated by the United Nations and every year it’s actually on the 5th of October but in Dominica it is celebrated on the first Friday in October for purposes of expediency.
Organizers say the show is expected to have six rounds ‘with a difference” which they say they are keeping as a surprise.
They also failed to give details of the prizes.
Tickets to the show cost EC $30.00
Dear negative commentors. Please note that the pageant is done in an effort to allow the teachers along with the help of their students to showcase there creative ideas and rtistic abilities. The rounds in this show are unlike the Queen Show, making it compulsory that students are ivloved in the building process if specific outfits. We must also understand that there are very little avenues for young ladies to expoe their talents other than pageantry in Dominica. We would love to do so but they are just not there. Please do not misunderstand the pageant. It is done to raise funds for the association, give teachers an opportunity at receiving further education, and allow students who are interested in such fields an opportunity to be involved in the planning and creative process. Also if any of you had taken part in a pageant, you would understand that pageantry teaches discipline, time management, people skills, communication skills and encourages young women to be as beautiful as they can be with talent and intelligent to back it up. Please support this venture by the DAT. It is the only opportunity that some of these young ladies have at receiving an education. They are simply doing what it takes in an attempt to better their lives. Let’s be more supportive. I will be there in the crowd, will you?
Stupppsss. Can you imagine a teacher who does not perform in the classroom but winning a pageant and getting an opportunity to go study when there are hard working teachers who deserve it more. Teachers need not wait for a pageant to keep them discipline or to better their lives.
Go Nzinga! Pierre Charles Secondary School / Petite Savanne repping all the way!!! Full support boo
If all of them were Armour-Shillingford what would be the comments. Dominicans like to talk before they know full details to stuff. God only you know why I came from this race of negative thinking people, for once think positive towards things so you can attract positive. Somebody please educate these negative people about the law of attraction. Smh……….. many times I come through here and just read some comments and want to scream hush up.
Not surprising in a country where there is a beauty shop around every corner and not a single decent bookstore.
Pageant is a “ladies” thing, so what all you expect? Let dem do there ting man!! The look like statues….
bon diex
me self going to stop my 15 dollars from going to DAT. That is utternonesense. Well you can see is time for ma Nicholas to resign.Them teachers self that in that more silly again. what dat doing for us. What? People working for how many years and they cannot make ends meet. Well not me they will get. I hear they had to beg and hunt to get six, hope they there the night. So is pageant you have to win to get scholarship. what about those who are teaching their hearts out and get excellent results// no reward, but wine your butt on stage and be rewarded. boy leave me alone eh
most of the comments here, about this and about dat, negative vibes, why you all do not see it as,putting the teachers in focus, right on center, maybe this pageant, will help bring about the recognition they need, beside’s who asked you all,for you all opinions, you all are not helping to organize anything, just criticize, that all you all do,you all supported a bogaman show whole heartedly, filthiness, skat you all behind.
That is why the teachers who fear the Lord are the role models for the students. This is not relevant especially at this point in time.
Absolute Nonesence!I vote for Celia!
Wey Wey Wey! Isn’t there anything better for the association to assist our teachers with? This is such poor taste. Why don’t the teachers union go around and find the hard working teachers and honour them on that day. What are our teachers and even our students learning from this? You can be a poor performer in the classroom but you can win a prize in a pageant. Teachers need to perform in the classrooms not on the stage!
go pcss go we are behind u 100 percent
At least they all have an education and their degree to teach students. come on support those young ladies. as far i can see its a show that is goin on, on dno by those comments good luck to u teachers
good idea want to see closeup of the young ladies they all look beautiful will be bias and vote for
Andria Andrew .. never had all this fun way back when I was teaching in Marigot
So how come I don’t see any men in the line-up?
I smell some serious discrimination here.
This is stupid
that was my first thought after reading the article. ALL U TOO SOT. let the teachers participate in other pageants if they wish to.
Find something better for the teachers to do.
That makes no sense to me. Ma Nicholas run out of ideas. it is time for her to give up the presidency.
…no wonder our children so STUPID!!!! 65% of DA illiterate!!!
Excuse me miss or mr chilout…. A little correction…”no wonder our children ARE so stupid… Looks like you’re in that 65%… Irrelevant comment! Go find a life and something positive to do
Another pageant? ebeh
Just now we will have vendors pageant and bread depot pageant cause whenever we need to organize something thats the best idea
lol
soon we will have pageant shows every month. Police pageant, priest pageant, pastor pageant, minister pageant, secretary pageant,fisherman/fisher woman pageant. Dominica seem to be moving backwards.
Boring, Boring, more rubbish “I AM”…same repetitive, basic childish out of date nonsense.
what is the purpose of this initiative? who benefits from the proceeds?
after 22 years in DAT existence, there is no professional status for teachers, no teaching service commission, under paid teachers and the list goes on. But what we need is a queen show!!! DAT is a pappyshow!
Best they make Pappy their General Sec. Look like is a pappyshow now.
I doh understand why teachers have to be in a pageant? Surely de role of a teacher is to teach, see how the ladies are posed with their sash, how is it not a queen show? What it missing again? So if is not a queeen show where are the male competitors?…teaching is not about glamour or who can strut their stuff…how is a pageant suppose to improve the teaching abilities of these young ladies? How is it suppose to improve their effectiveness in the classroom? No wonder Dominican stuck in a rut, even de teachers running out of ideas….pageants seem to be our answer to everything! Welcome to Dominica Land of the eternal queen show and not much else….
what exactly is your point?this is for the teachers.Who asked you to come?It is just like when the police is observing police week ,they hold a police calypso show.
This is ridiculous. So all the only activity we highlighting for women is more of the same prancing around a stage. Teachers should engaging in a national competition of some sort testing perhaps speaking skills in debate or reading. Creativity, professional wear, etc. Something to showcase educational skills, dexterity, etc. Also too many things going on where the younger gentlemen are left out. We need less pageant and more creative and progressive competitions.
You are so right. There are male teachers too. Do something that they can participate in.
Teachers pet. Anyone knows of and remembers the movie “Teacher’s Pet” with Doris Day? I have also seen it in on TV in Toronto.
Interesting! This is a start. Probably the next time around they could try something else. Someone suggested a Play. It is not a bad idea.
one word came to mind, “taste’less”
After two months of summer vacation it is just one month since school children are back in their classrooms. How acquainted and orriented are they with their teacher, especially the newcomers and those who promoted. The month of October has so many activities, just a side track. The teachers should take more time to teach civic education about culture, local dish, national wear, how to match for Idependent Youth Rally and how to respect those in authority. I think these is wrong timing for this pageant. Aquaint themselves with the student for a the first, then the second or third term, preferable second term around Easter some activity for the teachers can be organise; suggestion-the most creative teacher; A talent show for teachers,or modeling in formal dressing. Also how to be good mentor.Drama depicting coping in the world of work Teachers have being asking for incentives like they are the only civil servant.
I am in definite agreement with you. I have always wondered why do we have to appreciate the teachers without getting an fair amount of time to familiarize ourselves (parents and students alike) so early. These activities should be held in third term, after they have had sufficient time with the kids and guardians to be GENUINELY appreciated. IT’s all so superficial to me.
DAT think of this. How can any of those teachers be Royal when they broke?…..
Go and negotiate better salaries for the broke teachers.
AMEN to that!!! We need More money not a pageant.SMH the nerve of these teachers agreeing to participate in this nonsense. Rubbish!!!!
But what all u dominicans see behind people and their pageants na. If all you doh like pageants then just stfu and keep it moving.
SOME people like pageants. It is not hurting any of you. Jeez! Relax!
Bet you say that about all things wasteful and pointless in DA? Take your head out of you know where, smell the coffee, the island is hopelessly adrift. And wasteful events like this one exemplifies how bad things are. Trust me, I was never more aghast at the state affairs when I last visited, for 6 weeks, just one month ago. DA is sinking fast, fast.
I don’t see how this pageant is going to elevate that standards of teachers and the profession as it exists in Dominica today.
Convent Prep all the way
Another pageant again, next will be nurses.
wow some women a jealous, commenting on they should not have swimwear round it a fun event, just enjoy please.
Love u Nicky!!!! Go go go go go go go!
What nonsense it that?????? Six rounds of what???? Flesh bearing? Enough already there is more to teachers than parading them on stage.
Another beauty show again? Isn’t there something more creative that the teachers could have done?
This is unbecoming now man. This shows where the mind set of our people as a society is.
The people are distracted man…
what is really going on??? all we do in this country is pageants here and there, should school children now lus……t after their teachers????
yah pageant after pageant that alone that in dominicans head them days use the money and do somethign constructive
Teachers should be able to attend for free or at least half price. DAT taking my $15 every month. If there aren’t special provisions for other teachers MWEH PAKA ALAY!
You all always looking for a free ride and special consideration. Fifteen dollars isn’t even sufficient to represent you. Silly mentality in Dominica where people don’t want to sacrifice anything for their well being.
You ppl want everything for free!!! Didn’t you read the part which said it’s expensive to host such an event! Magway sah!!
DAT not taking your money. You giving DAT your money.
I can see six beauties there! the one in the pink skirt needs some gloss to add some shine to the seven !
It is not a beauty contest. Furthermore, everyone is beautiful or handsome in his/her way. Look for it, if only a speck of beauty. It exists. Furthermore, beauty comes from within. Don’t you forget that!
No! Tell me this is a joke, tell me it is April fool in October! Or maybe the contest is based on intelligence, argumentative skills, debating ability and educational techniques? But I hope it is not another female body exposing exercise for our young people again because then the teachers would be setting a bad example for a country that is already too immersed in appearances, body exposure, pageantry and sexuality! Is this the depth of our imagination and creativity nowadays? It must be the latest fashion to have a pageant! Why not put on a play, so much political, social and economical issues to turn into some really nice satire/drama? Come on teachers show us your intelligence not your body parts! I am waiting to be surprised by the “six rounds with a difference” and I hope that I will be pleasantly and intellectually surprised!
Give the people what they want. Skin! Skin! and more skin. Sadly that’s what sells. MY teacher miss CAL –HER, is going to win. Read it first on D.N.O.
My sentiments exactly. What the heck is going on? Teacher’s pageant? NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING. Should the teachers not be making sure their students, every one of them, PASS their exams to the HIGHEST LEVEL?
WHAT ELSE IS DOMINICA GOING TO SUBJECT ITSELF TO?
Do you not know there is always a first time?
After all you’ve said!! You are still going to the show…Im sure u are going just to criticize. Such negative energy…leave it home..#hypocrtite#
I do hope that as u said its not another body exposing pageant that students can return to the classroom having seen more than they should.
And what is the grand prize? Do they get a scholarship to further their education or improve their schools?
I agree…. IF you are going to put on quite a show.
Let us see something of essence intellectually
This is very discouraging.Very suprised that Ms. Nicholas is a part of this.
So, I need a little more information. If it is not a ‘queen show’, then what is it? And what exactly are the 6 rounds and what will be different about them? So far, the article has not said much (unless is DNO that has left things out).
the pic is to small cant make the faces out!
CONVENT PREP ALL THE WAY!!!
Nikisha Philbert was also a participant in this year’s national queen show
Good Luck Ms. Enzinga Darroux. We coming all the way from South Cities to support you!!!!! Good luck all!!!!
Go ms.Darroux all your support coming from PCSS and Petite Savanne your home town !! Good luck and God bless yu !
Awkward….I don’t want to see my teacher half naked I want her to get a PAY RAISE for all her hard.
The illegal president won’t endorse that one, now that his agenda has been fully met.
i LOVE THIS COMMENT!!!!!
Where the male teachers?
When you hear “SEX SELLS” MALES are NOT included. Males cover up, females strip down. I always wonder why.
Beauty beauty beauty it’s all about outer beauty….while our kids are underachievers…..
kids are underachieving because parents do not take an initiative to read to them or assist at home. You cant put a child in school and expect the teacher to do miracles. Read to your child, engage their brain, turn the tv off one night a week and play board games. Or is this too much?
Some of the parents may not be able to read and do maths. They should ask an educated person to assist their children.
So what? After teaching your kids for years , teachers can’t do something to have fun and release all the stress that your children give them? Stop blaming teachers for your children’s underachievement! School starts at home and you fail to train your child at home before he enters a school gate don’t expect teachers to work miracles. Without parent’s 100% support and interest in their children’s education then some will continue to go through the system without being able to read and write well at their level…..
There’s not going to be a bathsuit round.. ofcourse we know the kids will be watching… just goand enjoy the show..
More pageants, Teachers- Really?. Clearly, the only thing we manufacture in Dominica is beauty queens?
I know that life should be about having fun too…but comeon……how about competing to raise the performance of kids in your school and classroom instead…..
thats what the teacher award is for..
great endeavour. w
