Seven to compete in teachers’ pageant

She's Royal
Participants in DAT’s She’s Royal pageant

Seven Educators will grace the stage and compete for the top spot in the first ever ‘She’s Royal’ Inaugural Teachers Pageant on Sunday October 13th 2013 at the Arawak House of Culture.

The contestants are Melinda Ulysses of St. Mary’s Primary School, who was also a participant in this year’s national queen show, Enzinga Darroux of Pierre Charles Secondary, Andria Andrew of Wills Strathmore Stevens, Merlincia Henry of the Convent Preparatory, Delah Gachette of the Isaiah Thomas Secondary, Odessa Elie from Convent High and Nikisha Philbert of the Laudat Primary School.

President of the Dominica Association of Teachers (DAT) Celia Nicholas, said that the pageant was being introduced in response to requests for something of that nature as part of the DAT’s observance of World Teachers Day.

“As part of the observance of world Teachers day, DAT normally we try to have different activities …So we have to satisfy the demands of every one and there was a request some time ago, that we have something of that nature and Miss Mora (Antoinette Mora) came in and put the icing on the cake,” she said.

Nicholas added that because of the cost, they may not be able to have the pageant every year.

“It is an inaugural pageant and some individuals are hoping that we do it every two years we don’t know about that yet because it is a very expensive venture but in 2015 the Caribbean Union of Teachers will be hosted by the Dominica Association of Teachers. As the Caribbean region of teachers, we meet biannually so this includes counties from the Bahamas right down to Suriname”.

She noted that She’s Royal is a pageant, not a queen show and it is part of their celebration of the 20th observation of World Teachers Day.

World Teacher’s Day has been inaugurated by the United Nations and every year it’s actually on the 5th of October but in Dominica it is celebrated on the first Friday in October for purposes of expediency.

Organizers say the show is expected to have six rounds ‘with a difference” which they say they are keeping as a surprise.

They also failed to give details of the prizes.

Tickets to the show cost EC $30.00

Dear negative commentors. Please note that the pageant is done in an effort to allow the teachers along with the help of their students to showcase there creative ideas and rtistic abilities. The rounds in this show are unlike the Queen Show, making it compulsory that students are ivloved in the building process if specific outfits. We must also understand that there are very little avenues for young ladies to expoe their talents other than pageantry in Dominica. We would love to do so but they are just not there. Please do not misunderstand the pageant. It is done to raise funds for the association, give teachers an opportunity at receiving further education, and allow students who are interested in such fields an opportunity to be involved in the planning and creative process. Also if any of you had taken part in a pageant, you would understand that pageantry teaches discipline, time management, people skills, communication skills and encourages young women to be as beautiful as they can be with talent and intelligent to back it up. Please support this venture by the DAT. It is the only opportunity that some of these young ladies have at receiving an education. They are simply doing what it takes in an attempt to better their lives. Let’s be more supportive. I will be there in the crowd, will you?

Stupppsss. Can you imagine a teacher who does not perform in the classroom but winning a pageant and getting an opportunity to go study when there are hard working teachers who deserve it more. Teachers need not wait for a pageant to keep them discipline or to better their lives.

If all of them were Armour-Shillingford what would be the comments. Dominicans like to talk before they know full details to stuff. God only you know why I came from this race of negative thinking people, for once think positive towards things so you can attract positive. Somebody please educate these negative people about the law of attraction. Smh……….. many times I come through here and just read some comments and want to scream hush up.

Wey Wey Wey! Isn’t there anything better for the association to assist our teachers with? This is such poor taste. Why don’t the teachers union go around and find the hard working teachers and honour them on that day. What are our teachers and even our students learning from this? You can be a poor performer in the classroom but you can win a prize in a pageant. Teachers need to perform in the classrooms not on the stage!

I doh understand why teachers have to be in a pageant? Surely de role of a teacher is to teach, see how the ladies are posed with their sash, how is it not a queen show? What it missing again? So if is not a queeen show where are the male competitors?…teaching is not about glamour or who can strut their stuff…how is a pageant suppose to improve the teaching abilities of these young ladies? How is it suppose to improve their effectiveness in the classroom? No wonder Dominican stuck in a rut, even de teachers running out of ideas….pageants seem to be our answer to everything! Welcome to Dominica Land of the eternal queen show and not much else….

    • October 4, 2013

This is ridiculous. So all the only activity we highlighting for women is more of the same prancing around a stage. Teachers should engaging in a national competition of some sort testing perhaps speaking skills in debate or reading. Creativity, professional wear, etc. Something to showcase educational skills, dexterity, etc. Also too many things going on where the younger gentlemen are left out. We need less pageant and more creative and progressive competitions.

    October 3, 2013

After two months of summer vacation it is just one month since school children are back in their classrooms. How acquainted and orriented are they with their teacher, especially the newcomers and those who promoted. The month of October has so many activities, just a side track. The teachers should take more time to teach civic education about culture, local dish, national wear, how to match for Idependent Youth Rally and how to respect those in authority. I think these is wrong timing for this pageant. Aquaint themselves with the student for a the first, then the second or third term, preferable second term around Easter some activity for the teachers can be organise; suggestion-the most creative teacher; A talent show for teachers,or modeling in formal dressing. Also how to be good mentor.Drama depicting coping in the world of work Teachers have being asking for incentives like they are the only civil servant.

    • October 4, 2013

I am in definite agreement with you. I have always wondered why do we have to appreciate the teachers without getting an fair amount of time to familiarize ourselves (parents and students alike) so early. These activities should be held in third term, after they have had sufficient time with the kids and guardians to be GENUINELY appreciated. IT’s all so superficial to me.

Bet you say that about all things wasteful and pointless in DA? Take your head out of you know where, smell the coffee, the island is hopelessly adrift. And wasteful events like this one exemplifies how bad things are. Trust me, I was never more aghast at the state affairs when I last visited, for 6 weeks, just one month ago. 39. Truth be told
    October 3, 2013

No! Tell me this is a joke, tell me it is April fool in October! Or maybe the contest is based on intelligence, argumentative skills, debating ability and educational techniques? But I hope it is not another female body exposing exercise for our young people again because then the teachers would be setting a bad example for a country that is already too immersed in appearances, body exposure, pageantry and sexuality! Is this the depth of our imagination and creativity nowadays? It must be the latest fashion to have a pageant! Why not put on a play, so much political, social and economical issues to turn into some really nice satire/drama? Come on teachers show us your intelligence not your body parts! I am waiting to be surprised by the “six rounds with a difference” and I hope that I will be pleasantly and intellectually surprised!

kids are underachieving because parents do not take an initiative to read to them or assist at home. You cant put a child in school and expect the teacher to do miracles. Read to your child, engage their brain, turn the tv off one night a week and play board games. Or is this too much?

      • Justice and Truth
        October 7, 2013

Some of the parents may not be able to read and do maths. They should ask an educated person to assist their children.

    • curiouss
      October 13, 2013

So what? After teaching your kids for years , teachers can’t do something to have fun and release all the stress that your children give them? Stop blaming teachers for your children’s underachievement! School starts at home and you fail to train your child at home before he enters a school gate don’t expect teachers to work miracles. Without parent’s 100% support and interest in their children’s education then some will continue to go through the system without being able to read and write well at their level…..
