Showdown Mas Camp is back

Head of Showdown Mas Camp, Pat Aaron

After a one year absence, organizers of Show Down Mas Camp are promising a revitalized and better production in 2010.

Showdown Mas Camp will host its first show for the season tonight at the Harlem Plaza in Newtown.

“We have every type of calypso in the camp. We have tempo, social commentary, social searching, humorous and when you come to the camp you will not regret it,” the head of Showdown Mas Camp, Pat Aaron, said.

Telecommunications sponsor Digicel is the headline sponsor. They have given up to $22, 000 towards the staging of the event. Other major sponsors of the Camp are Heineken and Scotia Bank.

Meantime, Aaron says the date of Carnival has continued to negatively impact the calypso season.

He said there is not enough time to prepare for the calypso season.

“I still hold the view that we have three major events in Dominica: Independence in November, Christmas in December and Carnival in February. Each one matters to the other and it is a disadvantage. I think we would be doing ourselves a favour if we had at least three months to prepare for Carnival,” he said.

Aaron is suggesting that Carnival be pushed back to April or May.

“In Dominica we depend a lot on the influx of overseas nationals, and Dominicans overseas would have more money in March because most get their tax rebate at that time. It would be better for the calypsonians because there is an influx of persons in the recording studios and tents,” he said.

He said while the number of studios is increasing every year, there is not enough time.

The Camp is home to 21 Calypsonians including four-time Calypso Monarch, King Dice.

Good point Pat Aaron. I support you on that .Carnival should be somewhere in July. These three events are truly too close. People need more time to prepare especially coming from overseas.

It always amuses me when one says that there is not enough time for calypsonians to prepare for the next carnival. i could possibly tell you when ash wednesday willbe for the next ten years. It means therefore the calypsonians should know how much time that is needed to produce a song and give themselves an appropriate start date. Carnival preparation should not start after Christmas. Should start right after the last carnival. Trinidad does it everyyear ,so why cant we!
Even with a date change, you start preparations late you will still struggle to be ready.

Before there can be a can in carnival date the mentally of the people… like the carnival planning committee has to change. Even though the change the date of carnival because of the way things are currently done there still won’t be progress. How can u start planning a few months before. Its the same problem I have with the WCMF…common after years of existence, you mean to tell me in JULY there are still in the planning stage…trying to find artist…..oh please!!!!

I agree with mr Aaron and others who are advocating for a change of month for carnival. Here are three reasons.1 we can’t compete with Trinidad . If we want to make money from our carnival we can’t have the same date with T&T . 2 Carnival is really to close to xmas. 3. Changing the date /month will in no way impact the lentern / easter celebrations.

    @ staffy…whts ure point???? CHUPESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!

Pertaining to the carnival that was mention by Pat…. common year in year out you carnival is the same time….so why not start planning early. Mean we know carnival is going to be round february therefore planning for the next year should begin right after carnival is over and not in December. Its all about planning people!!!!
