Stardom Tent shuffle

A scene from Stardom Monarch of the Tent 2010

Stardom Tent, an event of the calypso season, will now be held on Saturdays as opposed to Wednesdays, organisers say.

According to Norman Letang, chairman of the event, so far this year the tent has proven to be a greater success on Saturdays than on Wednesdays.

The tent opened Saturday January 22 and was “one and a half times good as we expected it to be and the two other Wednesdays were not as good as we expected them to be,” Letang said Monday.

However, when other calypso events are being held on a Saturday, the Stardom Tent will be hosted on Wednesday.

This is Pat Aaron, this is where I stand. If I had the power to write a song strong enough to throw down ANY CORRUPT GOVERNMENT, and I mean ANY CORRUPT GOVERNMENT, be it Freedom, Workers, or Labour. I would. We have accused and voted every government we have had, for corruption. Before, corruption was A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS, A MINISTER USE GOVERNMENT MACHINERY TO DO HIS PRIVATE WORK . conflict of interest, was corruption, and through it all, I have consistently written against it. Now we seeing the true meaning of corruption and immorality and manipulation of the police and the courts, and disrespect for people, and cynicism, and total lack of humilityand transparency, deception, lies, disregard for opposition, fire bombing of senior citizens and this is just the tip of the iceberg, and all you think I can stop writing against that. THAT IS WHO I AM, THAT IS WHO I HAVE BEEN for more than 40 years, long before the birth of Roosevelt Skerritt. ALWAYS AGAINST WRONG DOING IN PUBLIC OFFICE, iF ANYBODY WANT TO OPERATE THIS WAY, GO INTO PRIVATE BUSINESS AND BE AS CORRUPT AS YOU WANT TO BE, PEOPLE WILL SUPPORT YOU OR NOT SUPPORT YOU, GO INTO CRIME, DRUG DEALING, TAKE YOUR CHANCES WITH THE LAW AND YOUR DRUG DEALING RIVALS, BUT NOT INTO GOVERNMENT WHERE PEOPLE ARE PAYING YOU TO DO A JOB OF RUNNING THE COUNTRY FOR THE BETTER OF ALL THE PEOPLE. Thas what i write about. yes if i could write a song to throw down a corrupt government , i would, with no apology to any man, now take a draw on dat.
AS LONG AS i AM ALIVE, I WILL BE WRITING AGAINST ALL ANTI HUMAN BEHAVUIOR, ITS FOR MY SURVIVAL AND YOURS TOO.

Pat I agree to disagree with you to some extent. In the time of Mamo your pen rained endless licks like old clothes on her government they are too many to count. Now, Show us the followers of calypso – the true calpyso lovers who appreciate the art form no materwhat the subject, when have you ever written a song that was/is criical of the UWP in all its years of existence. Even the “Ency” a one time stalwart of the UWP has penned soem cricism of the UWP. “Check Third Eye’s” song in 2011. One get the impression that you have not seen or heard about any wrong doings of the UWP. Yes, it is Mr. Skerrit that is in government and he must be given his fair share of “political blows”. It goes withthe territory. But if you have taken upon yourself the job of writing songs against situations, developments etc that are anti-human, then it is not only government’s that do things which are anti-human. Check the opposition too. have they lived up to the people’s expectations.theyare part of the governance of the country – that is our system of government.

Pat who cares about your songs .

You still have all your singers on the same level with the exception of dice.

It is soooo plain to see the manipulation. That is why I never buy a Cd from Mas Camp.

nothing is wrong with stardom changing on a saturday. I love calypso and the songs at stardom are seroius songs to learn and pounder on, mass camp as we all know is beef, beef, beef although their are possitive one like sye, that we can learn from. When come to calypso dominicans follow. The wednesday is really not the best time, Competition is always a good thing. as being its always our choice what we want and don’t want to do. But one thing people, politics can never save our souls or put bread on our table so stop the fighting and fussing over politics, dominica is all a we own to build and promote. like my good friend copiel we have to learn to agree and disagree, without hurting our bringing down another brother or sister. do enjoy the calypso and stop the fighting man.

Weh weh weh! Dominica will remain divisive. It is sad to see that persons believe the tents are politically affiliated hence the reason for not attending. When will Dominicans Wise up? Have fun people. Stop the hate. If the people wants to change their tent to Saturday what’s the big deal. If they try it and it does not work then maybe they will try another night. What does that have to with the other tent. I need to listen to the calypsos keenly because I did not realize that one was Anti-Skerrit.

Come on People, relax and have all you fun.

  6. Calypso Controversy
    February 8, 2011

There is still no answer to the question from calypso controversy. Outside the Calypso season which literaly end on Samedi Gwas for most of the so called “calypso lovers”. See them on Carnival Monday and Tuesday girating in gay abandon to merely chants from a forever HOARSE VOICE and 1, 2, 3, jump jump jump jump. Can anyone indicate any calypso from the pen of the “King Maker” that has made it big outside of the carnival season in Dominica or at any other regional or international event where Dominicans are not present in their numbers. e.g Arrow’s “Hot Hot Hot” made it big in Japan and Europe. Sparrow’s “Salt Fish” is a hot sougt after number in Europe and North America. Just one example will do. But who is the master mind behind the “King Maker anyway?. An avoud anti Skerrit ,News editor. See the quality of the nightly news he produces.

“go do your homework” you should take no comfort in the workers success at boycotting the Stardom Tent to mean an upsurge of support for your cause. There are many more praying supporters for Skerrit who do not go to any tent. But their numbers will overwhelm the collective following of both “Mass Camp” and “Stardom”. Hard to believe eh! Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

    • Go do your homework
      February 8, 2011

For your info, I take no comfort in any such foolishness as I don’t support the notion that workers has boycotted Stardom tent. My comment was only intended to remind Calypso Controversy that Labour has a much bigger following and therefore a boycott by UWP should not have such a great impact. Could you all stop this politicking and allow the Carnival lovers to go wherever they choose. I for one prefer the songs coming out of Mass Camp and obviously will choose to go there like numerous others, especially since it is on the weekend. And I am sorry to disappoint you (as you have already concluded that I am a worker), but I am NOT a registered voter and I do not support any of the 3 political parties in DA as none of them are deserving of my support. Some of you live and breathe for politicians – I hope they will guarantee your seat in heaven. It’s really shameful what is taking place currently in DA.

        February 8, 2011

Well, you may not be a worker who has boycotted Krazy Coconuts, but I have friends who will not support any even in Krazy Cocnuts because of Karzy T’s affiliation with labour Party. It’s sad- but it is true! I love Calypso- i have no political affiliation, and i attend both tents myself- but most people see these tents in red and blue.

If I was gven the contract to continue planning festivals in Dominica, I certainly would not be singing “bull&^it”. I would be singing Skerrit’s praises -not finding a fault in him. Now that the bull has been cut loose and found refuge in and among Skerrit haters, I am now singing about taming the rampaging bull. Tellme that particular tent is not anti Skerrit. In Stardom, thereare people who sing aloud in crical ways about the government. That si not evident en Masse. But we go see.

By the way, boycot for boycot. Charlo did not have to tellme or profer any advice to me. I will decide where where to buy my medicines too. I will go to bigger, better and cheaper stores in the middel of Roseau. I am on the rampage too. What you think my friend?

Take it easy BRO/SIS. Don’t get too worked up. It’s not that serious…its calypso in form; it’s an expression of events.

    February 8, 2011

How can this be true, “According to Norman Letang, chairman of the event, so far this year the tent has proven to be a greater success on Saturdays than on Wednesdays. Only the opening was held on ONE Saturday, January 22, 2011 when it was opened. So why the bias here. I was at the opening and it was nothing compared to mass camp every Fridays nights.

So Norman you can put your tent on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays certainly not Fridays “because you know where everyone goes”, Saturdays or even Sundays and you will still not reap success.

I was made to understand by the CEO of Crazy Coconut that a good job was done there but when I was there on January 22 I prove that to be futile. The place it too cluster phobic.

    • BTW
      February 8, 2011

Stardom tents have been held on Saturdays in the past- they have also been held on weekends in different villages- so just what bias are you referring to? You like Mass Camp- go to Mass Camp- Stardom will always have their followers- people who appreciate good music, lyrics, a variety of topics- and most importantly- Calypsonians who can actually sing. Stardom has been around for decades, and they have reaped success in the past- and they will continue to reap success in the future. Some years are better than others like everything else in Dominica. Why be so spiteful? Why take pleasure in the thought of the demise of something great? I’m guessing you’re not a very happy individual. Why not get a life, get a man -maybe get a better job- and make your pathetic self useful in society.

  10. Vibes
    February 8, 2011

Stardom should take the tent to the outdistricts. The gent Roseau (environts) crew are the ones are having a filled day at Stardom’s demise. Many of these people are not really lovers of the artform as they claim, but as simply blue (and green) loosers who are using the anti-government calypso tent as a means of combating their frustrations at consecutive elections defeats (as a stress relief). Since their constant radio verbal garbage on Q95 isn’t reaping the rewards they expected, their next line of attack is through calypso.

It is a fact (many people have heard) the “Kingmaker” and “Calypso writer extraorinaire” has boasted that his mission is to use calypso to try to “bring down the government”.

While he hasn’t (and I dare say WILL and CANNOT SUCCEED) in his endeavors, unfortunately many of the poor calypsians (including Dice) are being teken advantaged of, since the individual takes almost all of the price monies made, while the calypsonians pockets are left almost empty.
I guess, that is why they hate Skerrit so much. They believe he is enjoying something that they cannot wait to get their hands on!!!

    @ Calypso Controversy….

I dont agree with your partison comment. We flock to the “King Maker’s” tent for the entertainment, the ambiance, the fun .. and not only to hear the “weekly diet of Skerrit hate lyrics” but we go to hear the TRUTH in song…that satisfies our conscience. If you havent been (which i think you have no doubt) may i invite you so u can cleanse your mind of your anti skerrit retro analogy. There are many like you who seem to be adding to the controversy betweeen the so called “Anti Skerrit Tent” and the “Pro Skerrit Tent “, Hogwash!!!. Stop putting controvery in calypso. IT IS OUR RIGHT NEVERTHELESS”. where we want to go. Besides we stay away from hypocritical parasites!

  12. Calypso Controversy
    February 8, 2011

Yes! workers boycott have been extended from parliament to include “Krazy Kokonuts”. That is all there is to it. The low level of support this year for “Stardom” has nothing to do with the arts and entertainment. It has everything to do with our partisan politics, period. If you check all “Workers” mouthpieces and known avid supporters have been flocking to “Mass Camp” in their numbers for their weekly diet of Skerrit hate lyrics. Their absence at the other tent is clear for all to see. Another commentator like to say “IT IS THEIR RIGHT NEVERTHELESS”. Swinging Stars and the other calypsonians should not be too bothered. After all they have enjoyed much more success than “mass camp” anyway.

By the way can anybody identify any song from the “King Makers” pen that has made it big and substantial outside of Dominica and indeed outside the carnival season? I for one is unaware. perhaps Tim and Checker might be able to assist.

      February 8, 2011

I support you on this one. It is all because of politics. But the better songs are at Stardom. People should know that fame lasts for a while and after when people put you down you are down. If Pat should ever write songs in support of the government people would never flock to harlem plaza like they do now.

Stardom has a combination of all songs – those in support of the government, those against and those not related to politics and we the patrons who attended stardom enjoy all of them. We even enjoy those at the harlem plaza.

So for the love of calypso we should support all the calypso even if we have our favourites.

I thought Labour had a big majority. I would think that if workers choose to boycott “Krazy Coconuts”, the massive Labour followers should be able to full it up. Don’t you?

hey don’t be fooled!! the gents Roseau (civil servant) following who flock to Mass Camp do not represent the vast majority of Dominicans, many of whom yes are entertained by the calypsos (all of them) but do not take them as seriously to influence their vote on election day.

The result the next time around will still be around the 18-3 column ( don’t patronize yourself)

That sounds like a joke. Its all about MAS CAMP’S GROWTH
