STORY OF INTEREST: Jamaica government probing the ban on Vybez Kartel

Last week, St. Lucia became the latest CARICOM country to place a ban on the Jamaican dancehall singer, who had been scheduled to perform here at the end of the month.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The Jamaica government is investigating the circumstances under which the dancehall artiste, Vybz Kartel, had been banned from performing in St. Lucia, the Jamaica Observer newspaper reported on Friday.

The paper quoted Wilton Dyer, head of communications at the Ministry of Trade, as saying that contact had been with the Jamaica High Commission based in Trinidad and Tobago and that the authorities here also plan to speak with the artiste as Kingston probes the decision to ban the dancehall deejay.

it’s really a lot of things being said… i think its really good music promoting a bad vibes ( no pun intended).. ON the airwaves though you don’t hear a lot of bad music… but who goes to dances and does the vibes at the dance influence them… I think the ban by the Jamaican broad cast commission was good… It outlines boundaries, the different states should do that.. and not act in totality not with standing there is a lot of cleaning up to be done…..

They should ban all of them. Let only the ‘genuine’ gospel artists reign!! :)

Only in my dreams that would happen in this world, but still., I’ll take what I get.

…nothing but bad influences on kids….I have no preferences! BAN THEM ALL!!!

people u all need to stop being so brain less…i understand that some of his music is a bit much..but its only a refection of whats going on in life.i am a big kartel fan and am a young man/teenager an what he says in his sounds doesnt affect me or influence mi to do of any of what he sings bout…and thats because my mother raise mi rite..so if u all a going to talk bout he is affecting the youths..maybe u all need to ask yourselves a serious question “am i a good parent, did i raise my child right” if so u have nothing to worry about….dominican’s a to small minded..ps banning vybz kartel isnt goin to solve anything what so ever…..its like trying to stop the wind

Ya, but ‘X’ , what does Glorifying violence (Black-On-Black’ crime)’ and gangsterism have to do with music or entertainment? You want to go back to medivial days so everybody has to walk with sword and weaponry?
he should GLORIFY LIFE, not death of another black youth or man.

To “Oh gosh’, you kinda late wi……..It’ called a forum, it’s interractive too! So what are you doing here posting comment? Must be the Dominican in you den! LoL

Lots of interesting info sometimes, maybe St.Lucia N.O restricts comments a whole lot …but DNO lets us interract. Big-Up DNO, THANKS for the technology.
ADMIN: Actually St. Lucia News Online is a sister publication operated by the same company as DNO, and comments are not restricted; it’s just not as established as DNO. Thanks.

Do we have a problem here in Dca?

I’m reading the comments here and can’t stop giggling.

I went to the story on St. Lucia news online and only 4 people commented. On other posts, there are 0 comments.

So what’s wrong with us, all this bashing and throwing words at each other. Are we too idle in Dominica or is it because we lack proper night life we entertain ourselves on DNO. lol, oh gosh.

i don’t think that vybez kartel should be taken out from the singing industry.Yes it ir true that some of his songs are of direspect but indeed he has some very good songs.Take for example MAMA and LIFE WE LIVING.These two songs talks about the everyday life taht WE the people live.Like someone said if it was lil wayne or some other famous rapper was to set foot on their island they would worship them like a god.Hey i am a woman of pride but i love his songs so therfore,i am against the fact that vybez kartel should be banned

why dey doh banning tv? everyday over a 1000 murder happens on de screen. plus how much exposure of woman and how much sodomite vibes going on. i don’t support violence and disrespect to de empress dem but tv does much more damage than kartel ever will and nobody doh saying ban dis channel or dat channel but we ready to crucify de artist dem whether triple k or kartel. let de artiste dem do their ting cause it better dan killing an stealing for money and as de man say control your children doh go blaming artist. all in de seventies allyu listening to bi yo bwa now allyu vex about de same expressions.

Good job St Lucia. Let Jamaica keep their violence for themselves. We want to hear conscious music.

    April 24, 2010

I’m the biggest Lil Wayne fan but if you listen to some of his lyrics, and most of the hip hop artists, their lyrics are just as bad, glorifying violence and objectifying women.

I’m sure if one of these artists was coming to St.Lucia everyone would be breathless and welcome them with open arms! That’s called a DOUBLE STANDARD.

    ‘low the artists dem!!

  21. d/can in j/a
    April 24, 2010

First of all Kartel is one of the most talented artistes in the C/bean. Easily. His conscious songs lyrically are on par with anything written by Morgan Heritage, Tarrus Riley etc…

2nd, there is a time for all music. There are times when I want to hear Go-Go club, and Rampin Shop, especially in a party.

3rd, since they banned all slack songs in the media in j/a, there is a clean version of all of Kartel’s slack songs.

So if the grounds is on his music, that ban to me is BS. How about restrictions on what songs he can perform, or tell him he has to do the clean version. he has a million hits i’m sure he can still put on a good show.

I listened to dancehall from high school it nvr send me to smoke, drink or commit violence, people need to raise their kids and stop using the artists as scapegoats.

      April 24, 2010

I agree with most of your points, d/can in j/a, but Vybz Kartel, can’t compare in any lyrical content to the reggae stalwarts like Morgan Heritage and Taurus Riley and even Jah Cure. Let’s just say if women weren’t around he wouldn’t be able to sing about much else. Barring this, I fail to see how his music spurs violence. People have their free will to do as they choose. To each his own

    Exporting violence eh!
This Jamaican official is only admitting their intention to export some of Jamaica’s unwanted violence to the rest of CARICOM. What’s their next export to us, their drug dealers and guns? (well we might be too late).

This Gov’t official is one of those who has gone to the media to plead to Jamaican youth to stop that Gaza vs. Gully violence but now wants the rest of CARICOM to have it. Talk about double standards….or no standards at all. I would not wish that stuff on my worst emimies.

Over 2000 Jamaicans have died from violence so far this year, and we are only in April. At least 500 of them died from Gaza vs Gully incited violence.
Do you know Vybes also has another nick-name, it’s ‘TakeLife’.?

CARICOM should persue the economic union without Jamaica who is reluctant anyway. If it’s population numbers we want, Jamaica has 2.5 million poor people, replace it with Haiti that has 8 million poor people and encourage Dominican Republic with 10 million poor people and more resources to join, if we want numbers.

STOP SPREADING FALSE RUMOURS YOU LIAR

Your statistics are pure lies. The murder total so far in J/a for the year is about 500 not 2000.

Further, there have hardly been any killings in j/a which were because of gaza vs. gully. Most killings in j/a are between warring communities, as in reprisal killings, its a back and forth thing.

The other murders mostly occur during robberies, other persons are killed because they refuse to submit to extortion, and then of course anyone stupid enough to go to the police to report a crime is wiped out.

No one refers to Kartel as ‘takelife’ in J/a. His only other popular nickname is ‘Teacha’

Don’t come on here basing your argument on statistics you pull out of your a** ok??!!

It seems that you don’t really listen to his music & heard 1 or two tracks of him you don’t like & just running ur mouth to say “all he sings is rubbish”.

What you need to do is listen to; Vybz Kartel “life we living” & Vybz Kartel “mama” & Vybz Kartel “realize” & Vybz Kartel “thank you jah” & Vybz Kartel ft. Di Genius “be careful” & Vybz Kartel “life sweet” & Vybz Kartel “yuh love’ & Vybz Kartel “black child” & the list goes on & on… So if “ramping shop” is the only track you heard from him & running ur mouth like you does so listen to his music wheel & come again…

These ‘artists’ are animals, plain and simple. I do not know why such people are allowed on the airwaves. Their lyrics are senseless and they do nothing to promote peace. Personally, I would jail all of them. Its sad to see that my generation is being influenced by such people. They should continue to ban them and even lock them up for being embarassments to societu for all I care.

Words are more powerful than any weapons! Until these artists (Lcoally, regionally adn internationally) change their lyrics to be positive then they all should be banned. It is never the music but always the words – the spoken words, the implied/suggestive words.

This is not about freedom of speech but about responsibility. We may have freedom to do and be – but with that comes RESPONSIBILITY – We are not free to do and say as we like without consequence (good or bad).

Coud you imagine having no boundaries or not held responsible? Sea for eg: has the freedom the roll and crash on the shore but we all see and know what happens when it is out of control.

    Marian Jno-Finn

I agree with you….. we need to have some control as to what our children are listening to because they are beginning to believe that “dance hall reggae” is the only music that Dominicans should listen to. I agree that the “music” in itself is great but the words leave a lot to be desired, they are awful.
