Tasha P gets full government scholarship

Tasha P

The Dominica government is granting a full scholarship to Dominica’s first female calypso monarch.

Tasha “Tasha P” Peltier, 23, will further her studies at a university of her choice with funding from government, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit disclosed today.

Tasha also copped the Stardom Monarch of the Tent and Calypso Queen titles during the carnival celebrations. Skerrit said government recognizes Tasha’s success and wants other young Dominican women to be inspired by that.

“She being a young woman will send a very clear message to the rest of the young people in Dominica, particularly the young women, that they too can continue to do positive things for themselves, for their families, and for the country as a whole,” the Prime Minister said.

Peltier, a student of the Dominica State College, wants to further studies in tourism, and Skerrit said “her training and qualification will certainly add value to Dominica’s economic thrust”.

Government has made scholarships available for participants of the Miss Teen and Queen pageants.

Another of Skerritt’s manipulative playing on the people’s psyche. Such pronouncements, good as they are, will never erase all those wrongdoings committed. When will a date for the dual citizenship be set so that Tasha P and other artists and Dominicans in general will know exactly whether the country’s leader is an illegal one or not. They need that assurance. A quick solution to that matter would encourage youth to partake in future cultural events with added vigor and determination. They would be willing to participate confidently in future shows and express their talents with a sense of integrity, enthusiasm. The artists would expect Fair play in their endeavours as well.

Youth are listening. They know what is going on in Dominica. They hear about the good things as well as the Bad things. We would certainly want them to do what is right, emulate righteous and law-abiding public figures. Most of the corrupt acts taking place are dampening their spirits.

The Youth surely would like their Leader to be honest, truthful at all times and do things according to Dominica’s Constitution. DNO’s mandate, I would think, is also to encourage integrity, transparency, accountability and Good Governance by those in Public and Private Office. Our youth must be encouraged to practice those good values as they develop as artists, lawyers, farmers, teachers, or in whatever field they choose. We must, as Dominicans, look at the Bigger Picture. Culture is the HOLISTIC development of people.

the time will come when the dual citizenship case will come to an end and you will shut up. congratulate the young lady, she did not ask the pm for the scholarship, he saw it fit to give her as a young woman the youngest in the calypso monarch and she did d…. good and deserve her crown. you wanted dice to win, he did not. he got a scholarship for making history, what did he do with it? He got a piece of land from the same government, what did he do with it, did skerrit buy or sold him? some of us just can’t see another man stand tall. if it was your niece or sister you would be praising the young lady. TASHA P HATS OUT TO YOU MY GIRL AND CONTINUE TO MOVE FORWARD AND TAKE ALL THE NEGATIVE VIBS WITH A SMILE. BLESSINGS TO YOU MY GIRL, AND COME BACK NEXT YEAR AND BEAT THE 4 TIME KING, THE TWO TIME KING AND ALL THE KINGS YOU CAN BEAT GIRL. HATS OF TO YOU WRITERS. IT SEEMS, IS DICE ALONE THAT CAN BREAK RECORD, NO HAD FEELINGS MY BOY, IS NOT TASHA THAT JUDGE HERSELF. NEXT THING SAY SKERRIT BUY THE JUDGES TOO.

Congrats! congrats Tasha. all this negativity would only make you stronger. so what if she didn’t finish college? at least she now has the opportunity to enhance her education, bettering her life. why not be happy for her now instead of criticizing her? i do not know her personally but am proud to say that i am excited for her. not everyday an offer as great as this comes along. let her lavish in it. and all those who are in turn criticizing people for making foolish comments, just pray for them instead. one day things must get better! much love <3

A resolution should be put in place that from 2011 thereon a scholarship will be awarded to the deserving princess, junior calypso monarch, teenage pageant, carnival queen, and calypso king or queen. The same should be done during our Independence Celebrations. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT

Well, I must say a good gesture by the government. A priceless offer, but can the government really commit to that – university of choice? Well let’s see a little what university of choice could mean.

Howard University tuition per semester (No room and board yet eh): $9060 USD ( 4yrs of school $72,480 USD ($195,696 EC) in tuition

Harvard University: $38 416 USD per year (Total room and board per yr: $50 724 USD, 4yrs = 202,896 USD = $547,819 EC)

University of the West Indies: $2450 USD ,per semester (Tuition) (4yrs 19600 USD = $52920 EC tuition)

I would advise the PM next time to put the scholarship in terms of dollar amount, and say whether it is to tuition, boarding, and fees. Congrats Ms. Tasha. Choose a good school (don’t drive a Ladder when you can drive a Benz) and all the best. We hope the government to commit. Note: Whatever cash you get for winning the crowns is peanut change compared to this scholarship offer)

The gorvernment has given scholarships to alot of Dominican students for alot of different reasons. This one i think is a well deserved gift as well as a move to encourage young and talented Dominicans to achieve academically.I’m not saying that others before her did not deserve the same but we should congratulate the government for starting now than never. Tasha, being the first female artist to break the record of male dominance, in the calypso arena i congratulate you and the writers for 2 songs that were well sang and performance well done. Good luck on your road to success. Now go make us even more proud by giving Allison hines and Destra a run for their money with some soca and calypso preasure.

When oh when are we going to be pleased (even happy) for someone else who has been given a opportunity.

Tasha, take the scholarship, say ‘thank you’ and put it to good use. Pay NO attention to the haters, they are seething with jealousy.

This constant attitude of bringing others down and never wanting good for others is very destructive. It must be very sad to go through life always looking at what others have, always wanting what others have, always wishing bad for others, even bad mouthing others. Just think of all the energy and time wasted.

Tasha dear, I wish you all the best. I pray you will come back and work for positive change in our nation. I appreciate all those who gave Tasha their love and support. On the other hand, we see strong elements of people in our society who are very envious. Hatred has appeared from their mouths but I assure you what is in their hearts is FAR WORSE.

Haters, learn to wish good for others, learn to pray for others and stop the envy.

    • Papa Dom
      March 11, 2011

And how would you know what is in their hearts? I believe by and large people are happy for the young lady, what they are disgusted about is skerritt’s sinister attempt to gain popularity and votes at the expense of Tasha P. I must say that it is working though because people like you will excuse his stealing, lying and law breaking because he has given a scholarship. I am prepared to bet my last dollar that the first the rest of the cabinet heard of this offer is when it was made public by skerritt.

      • Muslim_Always
        March 11, 2011

I understand where you are coming from Papa Dom, I will never excuse his ‘stealing’ because I believe that the thief hand should be cut off even if he is a leader. :-D

Well Papa Dom when a person says evil things to someone what they conceal in their hearts is far worse. This is what Allah taught us in the Holy Quran.

Thirdly, besides doing this for political gain, I saw some comments which simple reflected envy and this is wrong.

Some people are just to ridiculous. When Tasha P won many persons said that the govt should come on board and award this young lady a piece of DA or a scholarship. Now that the PM has done so its a problem for some. Well in life you will always find those who are trying to deter the progress of others simply because they are have been regressing instead of progressing over the years. Tasha you have done yourself, family and Dominica proud. Your talent will be beneficial in the field of tourism. You could not have been given a much better gift than that of a scholarship. Go girl and make the best of it.

Some people must learn to rejoice with others when they are rejoicing and cry when they are crying. Thats what keeps a nation united

I believe that the scholarship is a wonderful idea. However, I believe that there should be a monetary limit on the scholarship. If Tasha P were to be accepted to an Ivy League or other prestigious University in the U.S., where tuition and room and board can approximate US$50,000.00 a year can the Government afford almost a quarter million dollars for one scholarship. I think not.

    • Sout Man
      March 10, 2011

If she makes it to an Ivy League University, more power to her. That makes it even more deserving. If she can attain the high SAT score required, then go for it. Why should we limit her? The only condition for any government scholarship should be a commitment to serve Dominica for at least 10 years immediately after graduation unless graduate studies or specialized training is pursued. In that case, service is deferred.

Congratulations, Tasha. Tourism is great, but personally, I would change my major unless you want to be an entrepreneur (own a hotel instead of working at someone’s front desk).

    • Way to GO!!
      March 10, 2011

Well the PM is aware of that eh!! The man say full scholarship at the University of her choice, So that’s what it is. If the PM said it, so shall it be. Money is not an option.

    • Diaspora in NYC
      March 11, 2011

I second your comment. Studying in the U.S. as a non citizen or permanent resident could cost alot of money to one´s pocket. So P.M Skerrit should look and think real deep before saying any University of her choice. Studying in the U.S. of A isn´t cheap, tuition aint pretty either. They love it when foreign students come so they could bleed them dry on tuition alone.

    • HMMMMMM(the psychic)
      March 11, 2011

And, your point is? I am pretty sure you would go to an Ivy League school or a prestigious university if given the opportunity. So why not her? The PM offered her the scholarship and you worrying about the cost.

      • Sisserou
        March 11, 2011

I have no problem with the scholarship I think it is a wonderful idea. My point is the PM should not make the scholarship offer open ended and there should be a monetary limit. If that is done he would be able to offer more scholarships to many deserving students.

Tasha congratulations to you my girl! when I heard you had won, I said “she will save the prize money to go to university”, now its even better, you got dat for free! Invest your prize money wisely.

  35. So what about those who do not take part in Carnival
    March 10, 2011

I find it a bit biased that those who take part in Carnival get everything.

What about those who do not take part in Carnival? Does our government ever give someone a scholarship for going to church every Sunday? Or to the young woman who stays home to take care of grandparents instead of parading in bathin suits.

Is that what my tax money is for?

Then again I guess life is not fair so let life roll. The greatest reward is in heaven.

      March 10, 2011

It called CULTURE.Governments over the world spends heavily on the development of it culture, and they do so for several good reasons.
In Trinidad the woman who won the calypso monarch was given 2 million dollar and that was possible because of the heavy investment by the Trinidad government.
Way to go givernment of Dominica, lets invest in our country’s culture.

EVERYTHING for some of you Dominicans is politics….when Dice won 4 times in a row the prime minister awarded him…is that “politics” too? Because he give Tasha P a scholarship to further her education yall jumping on politics. If he say he will give yall kids a full scholarship I wonder if alu will say is politics and refuse it. ALL the man is doing is showing the rest of us young ppl in Dominica that when we do good and positive things in society we get good in return. Hoping that it will urge others to do positive….but some of alu just cannot see someone too well…stop holding our country back! Congrats tasha…go forward with that great opportunity my girl

I really like this one. Now I have the real answer why Dice didn’t get a scholarship too. Follow me with this one…

Why did every body vote for Skerro as opposed to Eddo again? … I thought everybody say Skerro was prettier than Eddo, so everybody voted for Mr Pretty Domples. So why should you give scholarship to ugly Dice, Ugly Karessa and leave the really pretty Tasha P standing there? And I must add, she has some real pretty dimples. Are you blind or just crazy? DA is a pretty country. Pretty Rivers, Pretty Mountains, Pretty Prime Minister, who has a Pretty Cabinet that is full of Fuchette, Pretty carnival Queen, and now a Pretty Calypso Monarch. Dice and the other ugly calypso kings over the past years are not pretty. No scholarship for them!! End of Story!!

All jokes aside, the young lady did what has not been done in so many decades. She deserves all the recognition. Excellent move on the part of government.

you sound that much more ignorant than the person who initially commented. The prime minister acts like scholarship for Dominicans is a gift, and a political tool, your political blindness though denies you the ability to see this in a clear light. Your opinion in tainted. You say the “blues” act like success is a crime, implying that you must be a “red” or “green”, well your culture it seems drives you to brush aside the issue and attack the person…evidence that you yourself are in fact a very simple minded person. Finally, do not use God in your comments when defending this evil government, because something might happen to you.

Get that straight cause there is a difference. If you have a scholarship then that means you are at a school that the Government has an arrangement with, they dont harass you or take you to office.

FInancial assistance u receive a portion of your tuition, get that straight, you need to come up with the balance. Even if you have a letter and funds are not available you still need to organize payment for yourself even if it is for the current year, daybooyah yourself, Government did not send you.

Young men and women all over the island who are more intelligent and also more deserving of these kinds of scholarships are crying SooKoo.

This is not a knock on the young lady’s achievement but on the Skerrit administration. As a labourer child who is working and who like many others applied for numerous scholarships and grants through aid bank cannot get a loan but this lady gets a full at an institution of her choice.

To add insult to injury Govt can’t deliver on promises to those who already are studying and are facing ousting from classes.
