Three carnival queen contestants still without sponsorship

Marcia Baptiste

Three weeks ahead of the Miss Dominica Carnival Queen Pageant, three contestants are still without sponsors.

Events Director of the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC), Val Cuffy, said sponsorship is  being solicited for Clarissa Nicholls of the Carib Territory, Marcia Baptiste of Portsmouth and Shama St. Hilaire of Pichelin.

The budget for each contestant is $12,500.

“We just want to see Dominicans from all walks of life give tremendous support. Funding is key so those of you who are able to give some sort of support, sponsor a carnival queen. We’re still looking forward for at least three other girls to be sponsored … sponsor a carnival band… Whatever the case maybe please give tremendous support to all of the activities…We’ll take whatever support,” Cuffy said at a DFC press conference on Tuesday.

Shama St. Hilaire

DOMLEC has already sponsored Kristelle Fagan, Valdie Dejean is sponsored by her friends and co-workers of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Danna Augustine is sponsored by Scotia Bank and Amy Polydore is sponsored by the First Caribbean National Bank.

The contestants will compete in performing talent, swimwear, costume, evening wear and a question and answer round at the pageant.

The Miss Dominica pageant is scheduled to take place on February 12, 2010 at the Pottersville Savannah.

what does the carnival committe do all year round? by the time these girls enter the pageant the committe should have already secure their sponsorship.I doubt it cost that much for couple outfits, costumes, appearances ect.No wonder why no one is sponsoring, maybe they need to reduce this $12,500 to the real amount. The girls should not have to be running crazy around town looking for a sponsor thats the job of the carnival committee.

First of all people talk, when you have queen contestants that have not been payed and they had sponsors. people start wondering where the money went. you have queen show show every year and you do the same thing every time. we are tired of this nonsense. leave queen show alone. go church and forget that thing. now is not time to beg for money and queen show 2009 over so long and the girls still have not been paid. learn to clear debts and things will roll smoothly. girls go home, take your names out of that charade. good advice

    Mi Tori…

I agree completely with “no show”…..Marcy, you’re my girl but God is coming soon and queen shows are not what the children of God should be focused on. We need to open our hearts to God so that while he lives in us we can live for him and not for our selves. While we are busy thinking of taking up our place in this world, The End is getting nearer.. All the signs are there….

As a biz owner what is the benifit of a show when people are stealing more? The whole show system needs n update. The women are getting less of contestant material, the money is going to trini like our roads. The committee needs to organize bettêr with local biz. As a biz owner I see no benifit, I would see more by helping haiti or those here who needs the help. The show has become bull…, sorry for my language but someone has to let dominica know that its for sale. Get ready for a revolution, tony astaphan said we didn’t get impacted by the global ressession. So he is willing to sponsor all the girls lol. Say goodbye to the leader of the show, or the show completely. We need some help in this lawless country.but what

There is more to what meets the ears and eyes…………. Wonder if anyone can answer this? What happens to the EC$12 500 once the sponsor has signed the cheque? And who is responsible for those funds?

What happens to the money that the NBD have given for the costumes? It should mean that each of the young ladies have quiet a chunk of the 12 000plus right? And then LIME gives some and other foks give some tell me what happens. Who controls the spending of the sponsor’s money.

Do you smell that? Hmmmmm think people think………….

Young ladies do your thing represent to the fullest. Ms. Portsmouth stay focus to the others the same and those with sponsors same goes for you too. I wonder what it would be like to have no Miss Dominica 2010.

I wish there is no carnival show, to much corruption in this little Dominica. Ladies go to church and pray and forget this show. Sexy marcia go church with your sister and leave that show alone. Maybe it is a sign

Where are the so-called concerned, patriotic successful Dominicans such as Dr Clayton Sillingford, Gabriel Christian, Thompson Fountaine, Shirley Allan etc. who have been so vocal on DNO and other forms of the media lately? Can’t they not pool together to help sponsor these young ladies or are they like the rest of the politically vocal minority, just blowing ‘hot air’.

Let me tell all You where that 12,500 Ec dollars going. Come queen show night you gonna hear, The coustume was made by so and so from Trinidad and tobago, The evening wear was made by Mr. Calvin S in antigua . Swimwear by Mr. Blank from Guyana. …… So is there the Money going. Look back from years bac and you will see my point. Calvin S. Dresses cost $5000.00 ec plus , thats a FACT . Those Trini costume cost alot and most times its not even Trinidad Best Design, Leftovers they send DA

Is Time The DFC place rules that allow the girls to go LOCAL , and stop spending money like Money come on tree.

    January 21, 2010

No doubt that these three young ladies are quite attractive and probably very intelligent so the fact that so close to the carnival opneing they are without sponsorshipis very sad indeed.
But i will like to add myself to this list..i am not going up for the competition..not beautiful nor intelligent enough but i do have bills to pay which will be due before the Queen competition so i think that my plight is greater and i will not need all of $12,000 which is cheaper.
Hers’s the list of my expenses:
    1. Domlec $200 but i will greatly accept $250 as i can leave $50 for next months bill.
    2. Marpin $50 i will be so greatful i will pay the VAT amount myself..maybe from the $50 over i might get for my Domlec bill.
3.Lime..well is top up i have so anything..but it might have a double bubble soon so make it more than $20
    4. dowasco..doh dig they can cut the water..Dominica has 365 rivers..i must find one.
    5. Clothing..will check REACH i heard they have some nice clothes cheap so maybe around $200
    6. Miscellenuous $500..
So anyone willing to sponsor me just post on DNO
    Total sponsorship..$820.00
Thanks in advance for your sponsorship and if i have to wear yr logo or company’s name i will do so proudly for a month.

For persons who think that there are greedy companies, these companies do give back even if what they give is not publicized they do give….and if D.A companies can’t help, what are u doing as an individual contributing towards carnival or D.A on a whole

    January 21, 2010

In dis economic times all you think 12,500 is peanuts? Why so much money? 1)they need a evening dress, 2) a bathing suit 3) a regular dress for them to do their talent in.. why so much money..You mean if i decide to sponsor a girl i have to give her food too..Make it cheaper and maybe local people like me might even sponsor one of those girls i can always go to Miami and buy her dress for her…..In future i would advise these girls to make sure they have sponsors first before the sign up for these events..it wouldnt hurt

    January 21, 2010

i think over the years the standard of the queen show has dropped and the companies are not motivated to sponsor . the contestants practice for how long and on the night of the show is more nonsense , they do not give the sponsors their monies worth.

  26. just my 2 cents
    January 21, 2010

Yes Righteous i support you on that. The Ross University apartments millionaires what about them? What about Ross itself? The culture dying for real cuz that begging for sponsor ting is a deterrent if u ask me to potential contestants

  27. January 20, 2010

In the near future there will be no more Queen Shows, Girls will be scared and ashame to show up due to lack of sponsors.

    January 20, 2010

There are certain business in Posse that should step up to sponsor the young lady from Portsmouth. Courts, Roddolf Thomas, and all the other businesses in the area can collective come together to assists this young lady in represeting the community.

Step up to the plate and make this happen for Posse…..cause Posse people an go shop elsewhere but they choose to stay in Posse.

I guess you missed the Swearing In Ceremony that was held three mondays ago at the stadium…or were you more interested in the “fete” afterwards? Go do your homework the way we did it before there was internet.

  30. what a shame
    January 20, 2010

If the merchants do not step up and help these shows during the carnival season we will start losing our culture, carnival is part of our culture, people come to Dominica to experience Mas Dominque, and what will we give these people if the shows have not sponsons, the merchants have to give back something because they get all year from us the people. We need to step up people to save our culture.

Remember Potsmouth they use to do all the shows, but now maybe one, all because of sponsors, they could not get any year after year now its gone what a shame my people, do we really want our culture to be gone?.

  31. chiensal
    January 20, 2010

Someone help me here please. I think the lack of sponsorship only started happening around the time a contestant was treated very unfairly because she was what we call thick and not slim. Not sure though but as far as I can remember the company that sponsored her withdrew from sponsorships and a few more companies. I stand to be corrected.

awah wi. if i was a girl and i kno goin up for queen would mean my photo up on DNO begging for a sponsor I self not goin up eh. lol.

Ok just playing around. On a serious note I guess this is an indication that the Dominican businesses are struggling and don’t have extra money to spend. Mayb the intense competition from the Chinese and their cheap items?

I’m not feeling this ish at all, I find it makes the girls look like beggars real talk. I think the DFC needs to be more pro-active in going out there and seeking potential sponsors even before the ladies are selected. Plus, y can’t two businesses co-sponsor a girl?

….and some think that changing dates will help or make a difference, give people a reason to participate. Remeber old times, steelband and calypso and steelband and calypso and steleband and calypso, that are a couple things that made carnival carnival in the seventies…think organizes think think and be creative, be good at what you do and what you wanted to do in life and do not blame dates.

Its quite shameful and disrespectful to the country, that business places cant sponsor the people and keeping dominican carnival alive. Cant believe that businesses operating for 10 plus years cant find $12500 to support the people, who have been keeping them in business for all theses years.

    Shame on dominican business owners…..

Its ok if you want people on the net to consider you ignorant and backward, buts its not ok to make the whole world think dominicans dont know money. For your info $12500 ec, isnt alot of money, in our times that cant even buy you a wardrobe of fine clothes…
