Three share Road March title

Three Calypsonians will be sharing the Road March title this year because it appears no one Calypso dominated play at the two days of Carnival street jump up.

The title will be shared by Young Bull for “Pastor Bull,” Comforter for “De Speaker” and Lugurz for “de Lugurz back again.”

The Dominica Calypso Association met on Monday night to determine the winners.

“This is one of the years that we did not really have a clear Road March,” DCA PRO, Davidson ‘Observer’ Victor, told state-owned DBS Radio on Tuesday morning. “We had a number of songs that played a couple of times, we had a lot of songs that could have made it to the Road March but unfortunately no song really dominated …”

He said of all reports, the three songs kept coming up.

Observer said it was “rather unfortunate” that one Calypso did not grab the prize all by itself.

“We had very good songs this year but they were not played…” he said.

It appears the playing of “foreign songs” and old Calypsos had an impact on choosing the Road March.

“We have songs to play and we keep on playing foreign songs and even the long time Calypsos,” Observer stated. “We have fresh songs that can contest for the Road March, yet we hearing songs of 30 years ago playing more than the songs that we have now.”

@dominica dominica Why would they play that crap Dominicans put out masquerading as music in Trinidad carnival? They dont want to even play it in DA mas for a very good reason. Trust me if its good they will play it in T&T. Ask Mr. killa (Grenada) with Rolly Polly about that; ask Skinny Fabulous (Vincie) with Behaving de Worse about that; ask Ricardo Drue (Antigua) with Vagabond about that; ask all dem Bajans, Vincies, Grenadians and even Lucians and their good songs playing in Trinidad carnival about that. Only idiots would want to play crap and expect anyone to enjoy it. Good for them DJs next year they should not play a DA song even once if its not up to par let them give no roadmarch or call Machel in Trinidad and advise him he is the winner of the DA roadmarch hahahaha. Sad that even to this day the one DA song u certain to hear at a T&T fete is Balance Batty the last quality song out of DA but proves if the song is good they will play it anywhere and everywhere….

You all Dominicans to hypocrite. STOP making excuses. It is about time we stop rewarding people for crappy work. We need to send a CLEAR message to the calypsonians and not give NO one road march this year. The calypsos were weak this year and to me there were NO contenders for road march. NO songs stood out and was really played that much. Because there were none that created any real excitement or jump up spirit. To many crying calypsos. Back in the days guys had one jumpy song and one serious one. Why try and force people to jump up or enjoy boring weak songs. Come better than that and yes we Dominicans will support local.

I suppose it cannot always be the same. It is unusual that three share the Road March. Nevertheless, there is always a first time. Let us hope next year will not be the same as this year.
Calypsonians, think of a different style of lyrics. The tune may be excellent but the lyrics could have been a failure. This could spoil the song in itself and deter the bands from consistently playing it and the crowd’s enjoyment of jumping up to its tune. Think about that.

Lugerzzz???? U all must be joking. Observer, u allake no since. Comforter would be a clear, clean road match. Even Dice ‘proverbs’ would be a better road match than ‘Pastor Bull’. Stupes!!

Eh Beh Observer you well out-come. Tell me which Calypso in recent times, even ten years ago that can match up to “Tennis-Shoe Tongue”. Tell the Calypsonians stop playing politics and let the Politicians do their work. Until such time give me my 30 years ago calypso to enjoy my carnival.

many songs come out too late with too little radio play and many of the DJ’s are not calypso lovers. I was on the road both days and Lugas and Dice are the Calypsos I heard so i am bit surprised. however i understand that it is based on what was played throughout the island and not just Roseau. not sure what Possi, st. Jo, Grandbay, Marigot etc played in terms of Calypso.

What is the criteria for judging the road-march? Are there judges or a system in place to determine the result?
DCA adopt the same attitude of silence and lack of transparency likes the governments in Roseau and North Korea. Three songs tie for road march! This is a joke, an attempt to deny a single winner the full prize money, this falls in line with the Dominican way of thinking “that is too much money for one man”. What is the road march prize? $5,000.00? Imagine splitting this peanuts in three?
A word of advice to the calypso and carnival organizers, the cold is killing west Indians and others in North America, Carnival 2016 is February 8th and 9th, start preparations now, tell them “Don’t make a mistake to allow the cold to catch all you again, come down to DA FOR 2016, seats are limited, book now” because I really do not want to hear that dumb excuse that Carnival was too early, next year. Next time I’ll charge for my consultancy but this time take it for DA sake.

Observer ……….. is this an indication that the old songs are much better?

I for one prefer to hear ‘Mass in de Cemetary’ everyday that some o the recent calypsos.

Last year we had two. This year we have three.
Look out next year for four Road March winners.
DCA, you all’s system is broken, all round. Time to effect some CHANGE, for Heaven’s sake!

There can be a first, second and third place like they give in Trinidad. Three places are awarded for road march in Trinidad so the same can be done but it cannot be that the same $3,000 to be shared among them. Maybe first place 3,000, second 2,000 and third 1000. Make it better next year.

Something however has to be done about the bands on the road. They do not play the local calypso and when they do they place one set of songs.

Come on guys; the Calypso Association’s statements have me pondering.
1: What is unfortunate about the tie. This tells me you had a real contest.
2: You need a winner; does not need a “clear” winner. If a song is played more than others whether it is only one more time it is the winner. No song needs to dominate.
3: It would be interesting to know who does the counting. Please give us the numbers, if you cannot provide the numbers that to me that is problematic.
I would also like to point out that the Kaiso Association seems to open itself up for some “blows” whenever it makes public statements. Please ponder on your statements before going public.
    Thanks

These calypsonians need to make better songs, more upbeat tempo with catchy words. Too much of the same political nonsense that do not seem to appease the crowd anymore especially when people are on road and ready to have a good time. It’s difficult for the DJs to entertain people with some of the songs that calypsonians keep making year after year. This is the reason why foreign music and older calypso dominants the road. If the calypsonians don’t step up very soon we will not be hearing any of their song being played either on carnival Monday or Tuesday. Hence the reason when the trucks leaves the road on Tuesday evening many of the calypsos dies on that day.

    • The Facts
      February 24, 2015

You are correct. They are out to have an enjoyable time and to jump up with a good calypso tune which puts them in the Carnival mood. If it is a consistent political annual refrain obviously the crowd will not be interested.
What they think may be suitable at an indoor competition may not be suitable for playing Mas on the roads.
They must also consider that the political Parties each have their supporters. Some may want to hear their calypso words/tunes and others will not. Those calypsonians must give this consideration.
Hopefully, next year they compose songs with appropriate lyrics and tunes which are more suitable for Carnival. This should be a lesson for them.

this green and orange flag wavers from portsmouth deserves a better place than third place, they danced all through the both parades opening and carnival tuesday.while most of the other groups were just walking holding their flags complaining to be tired.you could see the girls in the portsmouth group working it.it is time our judges give jacklyn her lipstick.

“We hearing songs of 30 years ago playing more than the songs that we have now.” that should tell the calypso association something right there. Songs today don’t have that timelessness like back in the day. And maybe we need more airplay of those new songs long before the calypso finals so they can grow on people.

    • The Facts
      February 24, 2015

This is true. I have a few old calypso songs also of T & T calypsonians which I love to play and listen to. The lyrics are great. They address issues of certain occurrences. Not one of these are politically motivated.
The T & T calysonians have a way of composing their songs even though they have a political motivation. They are not raw, crude and rude, if you know what I mean.
Calypso Rose and other calypsonians sing of “We going Toronto.” “She Dere” (at all Carnivals, wherever they are) “Carnival in Toronto” and some different ones. It is a pleasure to listen to them.
Anyone thought of singing Carnival in Dominica or Carnival in Roseau, Portsmouth, etc.? Their calypsos do not have to reflect politics and consistently. It appears it is time for a change of certain calypsos as political ones.
They could commence now to consider what they plan to sing for next year’s Carnival and compose them. The earlier the better. They do not have to divulge them too…

When it is not your friend’s song that was popular, all u do is make him a joint winner with the genuine one.

It’s high time this inept self serving Calypso Association put an effective system in place to prevent this nonsense from ever happening again.

    February 24, 2015

Observer the DCA should put a music truck on the road to promote calypso. Be proactive instead of lashing out at others who has their democractic rights to play what music they chooses.

    • February 24, 2015

Visionary i agree with you ,with them putting a band on the road. Yes is their democratic right to play what they what but do you think you will hear dominica calypso in Trinidad ccarnival or in haitis? This is where i hearing my mother saying people like you all like to take out belly and put pie.
