Members of the public, on the weekend, were given the opportunity to witness the launching of two contestants vying for the title of Miss Dominica 2017.
The contestants were Karla Henry of Mahaut who was launched in her community on Saturday and Gabrielle Abraham who was launched in Goodwill on Sunday.
Henry, who is sponsored by the Henry Group of Companies and The Sign Man, said reaching this point is an accomplishment in itself and she has come a long way.
She said she always envisioned contesting the Miss Dominica Pageant although she pictured it would take a lot to convince her mother.
“She had to come around some time,” she said. “But I can truly say in spite of that she is and has always been my number one supporter and my prayer warrior.”
Henry stated further that she learned a valuable lesson from her father of fighting for what she wants and believe in, “as long as it is worth it.”
She said she will use her journey to the throne to put the spotlight on protecting the vulnerable in our society.
“It compliments my strong interest in being a voice for people around me who either could not stand up for themselves, were disadvantaged or marginalized in some way,” she remarked. “My aim especially in my community to contribute to the 2030 sustainable development goals agenda by achieving some of these goals through the implementation of my platform, namely no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being and quality education.”
Henry said she intends to carry out that platform in the best interest of her community and country.
During her presentation, Abraham spoke of the importance of music. She said she believes that music has proven to be a vital element in children’s education and creative development.
“In our society, I believe it is extremely important that we merge our children interest in music and the arts with our cultural heritage and its preservation so that more students are taught to play the local instruments and learn our traditional dances,” she stated. “We don’t want our culture to slip away between our fingers.”
She explained further that the use of music as an extracurricular activity can also be a positive influence on the country’s youth.
She said also that music can also help the youth stay out of trouble and from going down the wrong path.
The National Queen Show is carded for February 24th 2017.

They look like models.
I really enjoyed Karla’s launching. What a beautiful young lady inside and out and very friendly too.
However, I was disappointed in the way Gabrielle’s launching was so “private”. Young lady, this is the time to reach out to potential sponsors and supporters/fans. Keeping yourself so closed up seems stand-offish and it might just cost you… Trust me! Her chaperone should reconsider how things should be done in the future.
#I’mjustSAYING!!
It is almost carnival time again. How time flies.
Wow! This launching is on a huge scale. Who said Dominica is behind?
Beautiful and intelligent young ladies. Beautiful pictures. More beautiful ones, I visualize the contest will be a tough one.
I wish you beautiful ladies success as you prepare for that big night of the contest.
Thank you DNO for the beautiful pictures. Dominica is doing it on a big, wide scale and including interested young ladies from different parts of Dominica to be a contestant. Dominica has come a long way and is moving on. From my point of view, this is progress – one of it.
