Culture Minister Justina Charles said Dominica’s Goodwill Ambassador and cultural icon Jeff Joseph should be remembered as a National Hero.
Jeff Jo died at a Martinique hospital on Wednesday following two major surgeries.
“It has been a shock and it’s a sad occasion for the people of Dominica. As a musician and cultural icon he has inspired many people in Dominica and even Martinique and Guadeloupe. His contribution to the development of Creole music and Cadance-lypso is particularly most phenomenal. His talents his dedication and perseverance have yielded legendary hit songs over a period of three decades. We know that he dedicated his whole life to music. Through his music he promoted love, togetherness, Caribbean unity while remaining true to his Dominican culture,” she said.
According to Charles, when he performed at the last WCMF, no one knew that would have been his last performance.
“We know we have lost a patriotic son, a cultural icon and a hero,” she said.
Meantime Dublin Prince has added her voice to the number of Dominicans expressing sympathy to the family.
“When he was in Dominica for the WCMF, I never thought that this would be the last hug I was getting from Jeff. We have lost an icon. We will miss him because the country has lost an icon. He has taken Dominica to the highest level in terms of Cadance music,” she explained.
She said the Dominican people should never forget a man like Jeff Jo.
“The people of the west coast should always remember him too. The young artist should take a leaf from his music because he was a true ambassador,” she said.
Yvette Galot President of the Commission for Culture and Patrimony of the Regional Council of Martinique described Jeff Jo as “an illustrious son” and an artiste “who linked us together.”
“A singer of cadence-lypso, Jeff Joseph has re-established our links and connections to the Caribbean,” she said.
“For all off us who are attached to his music and to his immense stage presence, say on tracas,an deba!” she noted. “An artiste who linked us together we say thank you to him and pay homage for his inestimable contribution. May his memory remain with us so that our knowledge and understanding of our Caribbean identity be preserved and developed.”
Condolences had been pouring in after reports of the passing of the musical icon yesterday.
Events Director of the Dominica Festivals Committee Nathalie Clarke-Meade said she will remember Joseph, popularly known as Jeff Jo, for expanding her knowledge of Creole.
“He was such an energy. He taught me all I know about the history of Creole,” she said emotionally.
Jeff Jo, of St. Joseph, has been known for marketing the World Creole Music Festival in Martinique and Guadeloupe. His colleague Leroy Wadix Charles said Jo’s death will signify a tough time for those who have worked to preserve the Creole language.
“There was a time when people didn’t want Creole spoken on the radio. Many cadence-lypso songs came out in the Creole language and many different messages were in those songs,” he said.
Jeff Jo was on life support at the intensive care unit of a Martinique hospital. His family confirmed he had been unconscious since Tuesday and was taken off life support about 2 p.m. on Wednesday. He died around 2:30 pm.
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has described Jeff Jo as a true ambassador to Dominica, and said his death has left Dominica in shock.
Parliamentary representative for St. Joseph Kelvar Darroux has also expressed sympathies.
Fans of Jeff Jo here and overseas have been sharing their thoughts of the artist on radio.
The Grammacks New Generation artist performed at the 15th World Creole Music Festival this year.
Jeff Joseph was born in the village of St. Joseph and his musical career began around 1972 in Guadeloupe. From that base he has toured the world with a focus on the Antilles.
Many of his classic recordings were done in the legendary Debs Studio in Martinique and he had added various Caribbean styles to his musical identity. Not only was Jeff a lead member of the original Gramacks, the follow up Gramacks International, but he was also a founding member of the Antillean group Volt Face along with Georges Decimus.
Oh My! It saddens my heart to learn of Jeff Joseph’s passing. It just heard his music for the first time today and immediately fell in love with
his musical style. I will add his music to my most beloved song collection and treasure and play it forever.
By the way…I love “If I Say Yes” by Jeff Joseph
and this will be my favorite song by him because
it’s the 1st one that I heard of his. I will listen to all of his music but this one will remain near
and dear to my heart forever!
Everlasting peace our brother Jeff. From the Sylvester family worldwide, especially in Marigot. Blessings

I am very happy to hear that the Government of Dominica is planing a State Funeral for Jeff Joseph. I would like to suggest that the Windssor park Stadium where Jeff last performed be called the Jeff Joseph Windsor Park Stadium. Such a tribute would be a great consolation to his nine year old son.
I also hope that the media in Dominca did not only annouce Jeff’s death and then forgot about him because RCI(Radio Caribbean International) in Guadeloupe has been paying tribute to Jeff everday since his passing. My bet wishes go out to his family, especially his nine year old son.
JEFF WAS A HUMBLE,GREAT MAN, MUSICAL ICON, HE WAS PATRIOTIC TO HIS COUNTRY DOMINICA. I AM VERY HAPPY THAT AS AN ENTERTANER I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET WITH HIM,SINCE I BELEAVED IN HIM. HIS NAME IS STILL MENTIONED IN A RADIO ADD ON FRENCH ST MARTIN WHERE HE WAS SUPPOSED TO PERFORM FOR THE MS. HIBISCUS PARGANT HE WILL NEVER BE FORGORTEN BY ME.TO HIS FAMILY BE STRONG GOD IS WATCHING OVER YOU.
Jeff Jo…. Thanks for the musical inspiration and giving me my first big break on the music scene in 1978 by inviting me and my band (BLACK ROOTS) to perform in a festival in St. JO…. It was there my band met Royston Ellis who later turned Black Roots into to the #1 dance band in Dominica at that time… you’ll surely be missed by me and countless musicians and friends near and far..R.I.P my brother !

My most sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Jeff Joseph on his untimely passing. His father Kamos, His brother Scratchy and his sister Arlene are my good friends – Please accept my sympathy.
A musical genius and national icon not only for Dominica but the entire Creole world. Words are not enough to express my admiration for Jeff-jo. He is a legend that can’t be replaced. He joins the great patriots, like Mike Douglas, Rosie Douglas and Pierre Charles who all served Dominica selflessly.
I remembered him in Guadeloupe where we participated in a Dominica cultural, arts and musical exposition organized by Rosie Douglas through the Popular Independence Committee. The exposition was held at Hall Des Sports in Guadeloupe.
We had a great time there. We brought agricultural, produce and arts and crafts which were sold and exhibited. I was there printing T-shirts with all sorts of Dominica, Rastafarian, Cultural roots and conscious logos and prints.
Many of my conscious brethren were there. We travelled by boat to Guadeloupe. Jeff put up a thrilling musical show on stage. I was the MC and we really sold Dominica to the French people during that big event. It was in 1978. May his soul rest in peace.

ITS A SAD DAY FOR ALL WHO KNEW JEFF AND THOSE WHO DID NOT KNOW HIM HIS MUSIC HAS COMFORTED US ONE TIME OR ANOTHER JEFF U WILL BE MISSED BUT NOT FORGOTTEN REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND.
culture youte u indeed have a good memory it was harlem Rock Festival that gave Grammacks their first big stage, big audience but Jeff was always the lead singer and alixson Jonbaptiste performed along side jeff two singers doing different songs He didnt have to migrate to give Jeff the lead Jeff had always been a leader in whatever he did
respect for the correction”i was in dat” my bad, it just looked so to me at my age, but it was clear to see that Jeff was a leader from the get go, even as a crickter he would go for the wickets,in adonis.
Condolences, from the nederlandse, to the family of jeff, I didn’t know him personally. I saw him in a show while i was on sxm for canival, i love his music, I played his musics on U-TUBE my coledges enjoy it, He was precious jewel to Dominica, I hope he recieve a state home coming, not going, He was an asset. He is resting, to his families don’t cry, I pray to god to dry your tears for that home coming cerimony. He was a world Icon. his music was all in africa, I was shock to hear it. Dominicans are proud of you.
R.I.P JEFF, ANOTHER REMINDER TO ALL TO LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.
Jeff my brother, you may be on your way to that big celebration out there,up there somewhere but we will always hear you down here.Like in a garden, with all the twigs and roots we know not what will shoot until the sunshing give you the energy to blossom. That how i remember you at the Harlem Rock Festival on the newtown savana; That was one or if not Gramacks frist stage performance befor a big crowd.Shotshirt of Antigua was the artist who performed after Gramacks and i remember clearly him saying: this guy is going to be a big star, his going to go far in the music scene,he was not the lead singer at that time, it was Alison Jno baptiste who left the band later and migrated to Canada, then Gramacks went to Gwada and the rest was history.Tothis day befor his death one of his dearest friend in Dominica is Loftus Emanuel, the promoter who gave them the brake in the Harlem Jam Festival. Now i would like to asked my wish be granted,(i hope people will echo that sentiment also)that for the 16th WCMF, an allstar band of Dominica’s musicians to honor JEFF JOE music. We must dwell on the Goodness of jeff and cherish the warm exprience that we had with him. There Comes A Time When We Must Say GOOD BYE. Thanks for the Memories, Jeff;It will always be with me. Gone but Not forgotten.
good idea culture yout. can we suggest a list of names? i can start, big 6, anison, sinki, gussie, gregory, hemple, gordon h,stye l.,that will be a representation of all the cadence bands of the seventies. let s have some more names.
I remember me as a little boy learning to play the guitar made a point of duty to see Jeff Jo and Grammacks perform at the Harlem rock festival on the Newtown savanah… with no money in pocket, that night i had no choice but to stoway… the band put on a spectacular performance that night that stayed with me up to this day..remember them all dressed up in P.Js …Thanks for the inspiration Jeff… may your soul rest it peace
REST IN PEACE BRO WE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER YOU IN THE MUSIC WORLD R I P

R.I.P jeff jo, what really happen, y did they take u off the life support so fast, I know a lady who stayed on life support for a month and she’s alife and well. What was the rush, it’s a shame and I’m very disappointed in the person who gave the order, I’m angry, yet they ‘re saying they’re sad stupes. Why so soon, couldn’t live him longer, was he brain dead, so y? Shame, if it was PMH, he would still b on life support and could recorver. Its time we upgrade our hospital.

One more thing. I call on the Government to give Jeff Jo a STATE FUNERAL since he was an ambassador for Dominica. I also call on the Dominica Festival Commission to start earl so as to pay hommage or prepare a special tribute for Jeff at next years’s World Creole Festival. Nothing short of any of the above is not acceptable in my mind.
I will second that; it is well deserving
The (State)Funeral can be held in the People Stadium since we must expect the French to pour in just as they came for the Creole Festival. Just Giving my two pence. The Ministry of Sports and Culture please take note as the the Churches can be very small. PM please note as well.
Jeff was the most down to earth musical icon out there. His fame and popularity never led him to be anyone but himself. Always remaind grounded and true to the man he was. This man lived as a genuinely cool dude. He will be missed

I will always remember and be proud of JEFF and Gramacks when through the PM -OJ Seraphin administration in 1979 appeared at the SUPER BOWL in the USA and being the only Band ever from the OECS to play at this MEGA stage TO MILLIONS ALL OVER THE WORLD ..THE LARGEST AUDIENCE EVER OF JEff AND GRAMACKS .. doing DA proud
I have that same memory. In fact that was the first time I saw the professional band Grammacks, because prior to that, I just knew these young kids who had started a band, and I used to tease them that they couldn’t play one song the same way twice. Then I left home and next time I saw them was performing at the Super Bowl. Jeff was always a sweet person. What a loss!

Like a comet
Blazing ‘cross the evening sky
Gone too soon
Like a rainbow
Fading in the twinkling of an eye
Gone too soon
Shiny and sparkly
And splendidly bright
Here one day
Gone one night
Like the loss of sunlight
On a cloudy afternoon
Gone too soon
Like a castle
Built upon a sandy beach
Gone too soon
Like a perfect flower
That is just beyond your reach
Gone too soon
Born to amuse, to inspire, to delight
Here one day
Gone one night
Like a sunset
Dying with the rising of the moon
Gone too soon
Gone too soon
RIP Jeff Joseph

Romans 8:1-10
1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
7Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.
9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
Am I missing something here?

jeff , may your soul R I P,
DNO allow me to make a correction. Jeff musical career began in dominica when the boys fro Grammer Scool and saint Mary academy decided to collaborate thus the name Grammacks. Jeff and Grammacks moved to Guadeloupe where there were more opportunities for recording and performing . The same with bands like exile, milestones, even Black affairs from Margot wisely area. Knowing jeff he would correct you on that – Please verify

A Dominican Icon who will be sadly missed. The lord giveth and the Lord Taketh. Rest in peace my Brother
chambe wed pas molie….. so sad…
I’ve said this here several times – Dominica was the Mecca of music in the lesser Caribbean. It is because of people like Jeff Joe that we have Zouke and Soca music. A little bit of history. Trinidadians are claiming that soCA music was born in Trinidad when that is not so. It was King Shorty of Trinidad who came to Dominica, lived in Dminica who took Epi Mwen epi shorti from dominica back to Trinidad where the Trinidadians up the tempo of the calpso rhythm. It was the music of Jeff and our guys that made Decimus and Pierre Edourde transition from the GWO Kan to Zouke – all facilitated by the sweet Dominican cadence. I say all of this to highlight the magical work of Jeff Joseph. The man performed internationally and was adored because of his work. Voyage voyage mon frere
stop yuh nonsense. if if yuh speed up a tempo of one genre of music in order create a different genre then it’s something new and cant be said to be taken from somewhere else and that story is fake anyways…but respect and R.I.P to jeff joe
socalover u talking nonsense… up to now them trinis doing it to us… they have begun taking or following our bouyon style beats and calling it soca… u can hardly differentiate some ‘soca’ music with tripple kay or c.k…. what musician is saying is… trini had calypso… but then they up-tempo the music…change the groove and then called it soca… get it now… soca is just a up tempoed calypso when u think of it… why u think it’s so easy for daddy chess or dice and others to transition from calypso to soca
Thanks for your support ; I just didn’t think that socalover was worth the effort. An obvious ignoramus and arrogant to.
This Jeff’s moment hope socalover do some reading and educate him/herself.
WITH THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE, WHICH IS MUSIC, MR. JEFF JOSEHP,HAS BRING JOY AND HAPPINESS TO MANNY PEOPLE. MAY YOUR SOUL REST IN PEACE!! EVENTHOUGH, YOU ARE GONE IN THE FLESH
YOUR GOOD WORK ON THIS EARTH WILL CARRY ON IN THE HEARTS AND MIND OF THE PEOPLE. MAY YOUR SPIRIT LIVE FOREVER THROUGH THE MYSTICAL POWERS OF THE MOST HIGH GOD.
R.I.P
Am not a fan of cadence lypso music no more but Jeff JO I pray to GOD that he give you healing what ever sickness you got fast recovery. The lord will strengthen you and sustain you from your sickness.

RIP Jeff Joe. Wasn’t really my generation but I last saw him perform live with Triple K in the Creole Festival. Was a nice connection of veteran and young Dominican artists.
Jeff Bro RIP. Your work will continue. That performance at the 2011 Festival means a whole lot- you came back to show the young musicians in Dominica what we are capable of . You delivered like the Jeff Joe of old. The younger folks will not get it but for those of us old enough to remember how you made us proud, we say thank you. As a musician I say thanks for your inspiration.
I hope the radio stations go into the archive a pull out the old albums of Grammacks and I also hope that those Bouyon musicians can learn the art of musical performing. Jeff Joe was the master of arrangements, dynamics, transitions , layovers etc. Jeff did not have the perfect melodious voice but he knew how to used the voice that he had to carry the lead vocals.
Jeff Joe was a house hold name in Guadeloupe, Martinique , and the French Antilles on a whole. The work of Jeff ,Gordon and others (milestones etc) did significantly help create the zouke music. I hope the government declare a day of mourning for a legend , a Dominican Icon.

Two weeks ago I had a couple of my st Lucian friends with me on a trip and pone of the CD’s in my car happen to be song from grammacks to include that famous medley and interestingly my Lucian friends new those songs word for word. They told me that they grew up on those songs in St Lucia. I also met a horn player ( backed up greats like Bob Marley) he told me that he backed up jeff joe with Grammacks back in the grammacks era.His comment to me was Jeff joe is a legend. Like one person said Jeff Joe is an Icon -So true. I hope that we name some thing after Jeff and that we place a monument with a Jeff Joe statue somewhere in St joseph. Before Kassav and zouke music the French people adored Jeff like one of their own.
rip jeff

I give Jeff Jo his flowers every and any time. As a little boy with musical aspirations I saw Jeff Jo and Grammacks (original) and that day remains an indelible part of my memory. I listened to the first night of the Creole festival 2011 and I said yes that is vintage Jeff Joe. One of the most talented front man in our region ; his ability to lock into the band is quite enchanting. Jeff’s has a remarkable stage personality like the naturally gifted artist Jeff can turn that persona on instantly. I recall being at a show at soB’s in NY where Jeff was just a spectator like I was. I found out that Jeff was in the audience when the first Haitian Band called him out and invited him to the stage. Before he was called on stage Jeff was lauded for being an influence on these musicians even while they were young boys in Haiti.( Haiti has and continue to produce excellent bands and musicians)As a Dominican I was proud to hear that Grammacks and Jeff Joe had done that much for us Dominicans.
Another interesting experience with Jeff joe is that I recall performing on a line up that included Jeff and Jeff’s backstage prep routine was a shocker to me. I thought that after all these years of performing that Jeff would just walk on to the stage and deliver but no while we sat back stage waiting we were checking out Jeff Joe doing his rituals- To the unknowing eye it would appear that he was extremely nervous but this is what the pros do – the breathing excercises , the pep talking, motivational chants etc- it was rather interesting- Jeff the ultimate pro.
I am confident that Jeff will fight this battle – for those of us who know Jeff well – Jeff has triumphed over many trials including drug addiction. When I see jeff today and remember what it was like for Jeff in Guadeloupe back in the late 80’s early 90’s – Jeff Joe is a fighter,a survivor , a come back kid. I wish you well always for you have inspired me .
Yo dir grammacks te kay kwase, dedcepsion epir frustracion qui sey sa mwe dir zort. Your work is not yet done bro.
GET WELL JEFF…MAY GOD SHINE HIS DIVINE LIGHT UPON YOU AND KEEP YOU SAFE. ONE LOVE JEFF.
HOW CAN JEFF GET WELL WHEN HE IS DEAD.
YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO REPECT AND ACCEPT DEATH.
TODAY, IS JEFF TOMORROW MIGHT BE MINE. ONLY ONE WAY TO BORN BUT DEATH COMES IN MANY WAYS. THST’S WHY WE HAVE TO BE PREPARED AT ALL TIME TO MEET OUR MAKER. I WOULD LOVE HIM TO BE AROUND US TO BUT HAS NO POWER OVER DEATH. ONLY GODS HOLD THAT POWER.
