UPDATE: Mavado out, Cecile in at WCMF

Movado will not be performing at the WCMF
Mavado will not be performing at the WCMF:

Just one day before the annual World Creole Music Festival (WCMF) is set to kick off, the Dominica Festivals Committee (DFC) has announced that one of the major acts will not be hitting the stage.

Chairman of DFC, Colin Piper said at a press conference on Thursday that Mavoda is out due to “unforeseen travel issue.”

He will be replaced by Jamaican artiste, Cecile.

“Their management was only made aware of this recently and since then they have been trying their utmost best to make it possible, but unfortunately without success,” Piper said. “And so upon hearing that news in light of that information DFC has worked to find an artiste from the same genre that we feel will add diversity to the festival while ensuring a great performance from the reggae genre. That artiste is none other than Cecile.”

Additionally, he said, all logistics have been put in place and Cecile will be performing on Sunday night at the WCMF.

Cecile will be replacing Movado

“This obviously was something that was unforeseen, but it is something that we try to have a contingency plan for and so we were able to work with some of the agents that we had in place to get some ideas,” he stated.

In terms of funds already paid to the Mavado, Piper said, “We have recouped funds and that happened quickly and speedily, so the deposits that were paid was in fact reimburse, so that’s not an issue.”

He stated that all acts for the festival “remain as it is.”

Meanwhile Piper said, the First Serenade Band will be added to the Sunday night lineup at the festival.

This, he said, “will serve to supplement the Cadence and the Bouyon genre for Sunday night.”

Cecile will be performing in the United States on Friday, however she will arrive in Dominica on a WINAIR flight at 5:00 pm on Sunday to perform later that night.

Her back up musicians will be in Dominica on Saturday, according to Piper.

Recently, Nigerian group Flavour was axed from the festival due to the deadly Ebola Virus Disease scare.

“I think we acted on the best information that we had at this time and reacted in the best interest of the country,” Piper said.

The WCMF kicks off on Friday, October 24.

The world Creyole Music Festival line up is a good line up. Every year they would bring someone that have nothing creyole in them. I remember whoever that organise the World creyole music festival, One year we had ELEPHANT MAN AND ONE YEAR WE HAD WYCLEF.None of them hav anything creyole in them so what is wrong wit movado. Before choosing MOVADO we all knew wat kind of songs movado singing, so y d problem now. They should select the songs they want him to sing and leave dominicans enjoy theirmovado. I miss creyole festival this year due to work but next year i will not be missing it. I love that time of the year. Next year i will be booking my ticket early for travel.. dominicans enjoy to the max

The funny thing is when young talented educated and qualified people applied for the position of Event Coordinator for the DFC to breath some new life and ideas into the many festivals of our country, they were not even given an interview because instead they gave the position to the secretary. So this to me is no surprise. Puppets at play can never rise above the hands holding the strings. It’s all a game of politics and power.

From the time this Piper dude became the Chairman of the Festival Commission, everything seem to be going wrong. First, he created a total mess in the arrangement of the Creole Festival, and independent activities this year, by giving priority to some French holiday, over our culture and Independence. Who does that?, then he refused to acknowledged the dangers the Nigerian band was posing to the health, and safety of the Dominican public, and now major acts are cancelling because of his lack of foresight, and negotiating skills. He has made mention to being concerned about the best interest of Dominicans in every one of his speeches, while doing the direct opposite. Because of you ineptness, lack of ability to properly execute your duties, and gross negligence to the well being of the citizens of this country, your immediate resignation is what’s in the best interest of the Dominican public right now.

DFC knew from the beginning that Mavado wasn’t going to be there but to boos their ticket sales they push that line up. Good for DFC and their supporters there are so many local bands that are left behind and replace by imported bands, at the end of the day DFC will be complaining they didn’t make any profit to pay the local bands who they think they fooling. It is time for some fresh minds to organize the festival Piper and Wadix is killing the excitement.

I’m NOT surprised that the WCMF is getting weaker year by year. Just listen to the DFC Boss in any given interview. Close your eyes and you’d think you were listening to an OBITUARY at a funeral. I think he should bring down the curtain on the last night as a ‘Guest Performer’. Send ppl to sleep SMH..!

  31. October 23, 2014

Yes Cecile come mash it up! Movado is so overrated and boastful. This is a young man who likes to show off his bling and act like he is an American Rap Star! Because he has a few collaboes with Nicki Minaj, Ace Hood , Jay-Z and others he thinks he is somebody! It is good that the Committee decided to reject him as he is not much better than Tommy Lee Sparta when it comes to negatively influencing the youths! Good riddance! Quite frankly, why do we need (male) artists from Jamaica in our festival anyway? Jamaican men are so violent and aggressive! They should be kept out of our peaceful Island. Bye Movado! Dominica does not want you buddy! LOL

    • truth
      October 23, 2014

when movado was in his struggles he got recognition from Dominica , so today he is a big artiste based in the US now why should you say he is boastful … he worked to be where he is right now so let the man enjoy himself .. i see ur comment as nothing but hate

We do welcome your artists and the majority of Dominican youth enjoy the music that comes from Jamaica.

    October 23, 2014

Are you people effin kidding me? do these people who make these selections even know anything about reggae or dancehall? There are soooo many other more talented artists out with popular songs even over Cecile. When was the last time she made a hit, even in the Caribbean? WHO THE HELL ARE THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THESE SELECTIONS??? And to the person who said she is a better choice than mavado you just as dumb. clearly you are one of those people who enjoy nursery rhyme basic abc lyrical compositions. Cecile isn’t an artiste. She just sings songs about love/ relationships that have no depth. Either that or songs about man or other women who she think she better than. She cant perform. Her voice is annoying after a while. Take what you can afford i guess. Left up to me to me id just save my money n leave Cecile where she is.

this WCMF IS Questionable? you don’t feel the hype AT ALL.

the promo for 200 box season ticket in Sep didn’t crunch it’s goals that tells u something,

the Ebola death sickening issues is a factor plus the economy of Dominica is “DEAD”

The opposite is done as usual in Dominica WCMF first then Trying to rename a low standard facility a budget of over qtr of a million dollars for the ceremony, Lime Creole in The PARK starting after the WCMF tells the story…

will not attend any events for the season..
