Amidst recent complaints by Fanatik band leader and local musician, Cornel Phillip, that his band was not receiving an opportunity to perform at the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF), organizers have released the names of three new acts for the 2013 lineup.
Patrons can now expect the likes of Asa Bantan, WCK and Rising Stars Kross Vybes as part of the 17th edition of the WCMF.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday morning, Wadix Charles, chairman of the band selection committee, revealed that Asa Bantan is expected to rock the crowd on the first night of the event.
Pioneers of Bouyon music, WCK, will set the stage ablaze on Saturday night. Newcomers on the Bouyon scene, Kross Vybes, will assist in bringing the curtains down on the three-night event on the Sunday night.
Concerning the complaints by Phillip, CEO of Discover Dominica Authority Collin Piper stated, “I do not want to comment on that.”
However, he noted that performers are included on the lineup based on a set criteria.
“The criteria involves a number of things like the body of work of a band, how relevant they are in terms of their current music, when was the last time that they had some kind of regional hit, how promotable they are meaning that if we push them in St Lucia or Haiti or wherever that they will engender a lot of hype about the festival. It also comes down to things like performances, travel, amongst other things,” Piper explained.
He pointed out that in March a band selection committee was established to put together terms of reference for how the band selection would be governed. “We started with a funnel that was very wide and included all bands and as we looked at the bands based on the criteria that we had put forth…. a number of them had to be eliminated,” he said.
Piper pointed out further that not every band who wishes to be on the lineup will be included since there are fifteen spots to be filled, three of which are a strong push for emerging local artistes and which must include overseas artistes.
Piper indicated that big artistes such as Morgan Heritage, Inida Arie and Tabou Combo have all expressed interest in performing at the festival, however they too had to be turned down because of the criteria.
The World Creole Music Festival will take place from 25th October, 2013 to 27th October, 2013.
Major artistes such as Machel Montano, Kassav, and Busy Signal are expected to perform.

A band like Fanatik is exactly what Dominica needs at this time, they play everbody music, ALL U DOMINICANS NOT EASY WITH ALL U POLITRICKS..BUT I WILL STILL SUPPORT MY COUNTRY.
A criteria for allowing local bands to play at WCMF should be that all bands a registered with The Registry and IRD.. let them pay their taxes tooooo!!!! I’m paying my taxes and I don’t make as much money as them.. one set then!!

I doe get that argument that FANATIK have no new materials;Fanatik can play anything,they doe have to have new material like some bands who have songs that people cannot sing.

Well, all that has to do with money. These local bands cheaper than overseas artists plus local managers putting some money in their pockets.I’m asking what has KKK got to do with culture and art, or even creole? Next time I waiting till they discount their tickets again before the festival start when they find they short of dry cash just like will happen again this year. You wait and see.
Every Fanatik jam I go to, they pretty much sing everybody else’s song. They need their own music so at the festival we can rally say this is OUR music. Locally born and raised.

Being an ex member of the organization which organizes carnival Fanatik gets paid plenty money
by the DFC for playing on the road on carnival Mon & Tues when other bands have to seek sponsorship. They bowl out swinging stars to get the queen show for another big money.

Fanatic should be rested for real ..apart from carnival where they played calypso and that was superb….They should go and make good original songs ..They made any song this year ? i don’t even know .I will not pay to go and see fanatic on the fest singing people songs…That’s my time to go to the bar. Asa and Wck completes the line up and Kross Vybz need a chance to prove themselves. No bouyon band can’t touch KKK.who have innovated the bouyon .All my friends from Guada coming to the fest to see KKK. Mr. Piper.. Great business sense.

I am a Dominican who left DA years ago, but visit frequently. I must say that I love CK and Asa a lot. I support them in backyard parties and bbqs in DA and abroad. However, Fanatik will play some understandable music and give the show some class. At least the grown and sexy, the charismatic and diplomatic people who live on island or are visiting can enjoy their money too. They can have something positive to show and have a reason to return yearly and even bring visitors.

I have taken the decision for some years now, that I will not support WCMF until I see proper and enough involvement of our local talents.
Nasio Fontaine, Nelly Stharre, Chest Seraphine and his band, etc. If we cannot use the little money we have, that we have invested in our festival, to generate income for ourselves and promote our selves/culture to the visitors, who will do it for us. How many times have you heard our artist perform in Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, USA, or anywhere else….I we are just as good if not better. Money counts, so is high time we use our money to invest in our own local talent.

The criteria placed for the bands does not make sense when you leave out Taboo Combo and to have KKK with their usual noise. Have you listen lately to how they curse their fans in all the noise. Kassav comes every year..Taboo Combo has new songs…Piper should not open his mouth and talk nonsense.

Based on the criteria I do not see what Kross Vybez have met. Their material are of poor and weak lyrical content as well as music. They feed off of WCK and KKK, so really what new and innovative feature can they offer to the festival and marketing the island? Well as a close to Sunday I guess the act before them will be the last band to most.

Based on a few items he stated from the criteria I understand why fanatik did not make the list. I live here and not one song that’s originally from the band comes to mind. However, I would have included a mixed performance of all the rising artist like mel c, chad astaphans, kross vibeyz,coeb and such and allowed them the opportunity to close the festival on sunday night. They all have their own songs that are regionally known and is doing well on the charts and would make for a great medley of generes

I suggest a side stage be included that will be used to showcase other local, maybe smaller or less known, bands/groups in between major performances. We simple set a standard for this acts i.e ensure that they deliver performances of a high quality (assign a committee to evaluate maybe through some sort of run through) and a time limit of course . This will help showcase other acts from the island and also keep a steady flow of music throughout the festival. The festival is our own and we should milk from it all we can in regards to making our musical and performing artists known to the world.
They do have a side stage where they said they will feature at least 8 local bands.

fanatik please take this criticism positively and work on developing your craft. I saw you guys in anse de mai and honestly the young lady who replaced Carlyn for a few minutes had more stage presence and better vocal quality she was charming and engaging as well. Spend a little more time putting your material together and practice some humility,and maybe just maybe next year you could send in your proposal for performance at wcmf. Just relax and be happy that you guys at least have the opportunity to back up artists during the festival than not work at all.
