One day after the nation was informed that Nigerian act, Flavour, will not be performing at 18th edition of the World Creole Music Festival (WCMF), it has been officially announced that local Bouyon sensation, WCK, will be the replacement.
Citing Ebola fears, Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, announced on Thursday that Flavour was axed out by his government “out of abundance of caution.”
“It’s official that WCK is the replacement for Flavour band this year,” Marketing Executive for the WCMF Leroy “Wadix” Charles told DNO on Friday.
Charles said the decision was made on Friday to bring in WCK.
“Today the decision was made in light of the situation where Flavour was cancelled and we are just two weeks away from the festival, it was felt that it would be easier because of contractual arrangements to seek an international local group and out of the several international local groups available, we chose WCK,” he stated.
He said the band has performed at the festival for many years and has what it takes to replace an international band like Flavour.
“They are the creators of Bouyon. They have been in the business for over 25 years, they have been through several major activities globally. So in our mind we know they have what it takes to be of international standards,” he noted. “They have been at the festival 16 out of 17 years, so if we didn’t feel that they were of the standards, we would not have chosen them.”
He said of great importance is the fact that WCK has accepted to perform although the group has just about two weeks to get ready to hit the stage.
“The most important thing is they felt that they are on and they are going to put their best foot forward in making this year one of the best edition ever,” Charles noted.
Meantime patrons have this final weekend to get their WCMF season tickets at the EC$250 special price.
On Friday evening the Festival Dwivay is on at the Krazy Kokonutz and on Saturday the WCMF ticket train will head to Portsmouth.
Patrons along the west coast are encouraged to take full advantage of the special EC$250 price.
The 18th edition of the festival will take place October 24-26, at the Windsor Park Stadium.
Those set to perform include Jah Cure, Simond Jurad, T-Vice, Soukous Stars, Asa Banton, Daly Ridla and Triple Kay Global will be on for night one, Midnight Groovers, WCK, Harry Soundoureyen, Jim Rama, Paola, Frankie Vincent, Klass, Kerwin Dubois, Denise Belfon and Destra on for night two, and Elvis Crespo, Mavado, Tabou Combo, X-tasy Band and local Calypsonians: King Dice, Daddy Chess, Scrunter, Webb, Michele Henderson and Fanatik Band.
WCK CANNOT MATCH UP WITH FLAVOUR .FLAVOUR IS AN International music artiste . Everything about Flavour is just real not pan and drums . Flavour his name says it all . If I were DFC I would have opted to try and bring the Original WCK like what was did at Creole In The Park last year. But I guess visions have been blurred by the panel of selectors.
Flavour is axed by the PM and another band takes it place. Low and behold it’s a local band that has been playing at the festival for the past 16 years.

WCK is not the band of old so it most certainly doesn’t command the clout it use to back in the days with hits after hits around the Caribbean. So when the organisers decided to replace that foreign band could they have not got another foreign band, just asking(thought it might have been too late). Replace like for like so the customers won’t feel short changed. Every Dominican has seem CO play before.

Late decision taken by the PM which shows that the organisers,Colin Piper, the ministry of health and the PM are all singing of a different hymn sheet and everything is totally disjointed. No cohesion or working as a team whatsoever.

Is there a reason why it is the Prime Minister who has to announce about the cancellation of the Nigerian band? Isn’t there a Minister of Culture, or the Director of the DFC who is responsible for this festival? Why do we have people in positions, yet only the PM is the spokesperson?
As the leader of the country, and since it was his call that is why he made the announcement. It was not DFC’s decision … in any case does it matter? or you just looking for something to put your opinion on?
For all of you who keep clamoring for local bands every year; what if they had the same local bands playing over and over, how many people do you think they would attract in the ensuing years?

I do not think the organisers want the DFC to make a profit. They should go lacal, caribean(inc, Kassav*). It is must too costly to have the bands from distant lands, they will dry us up. With my idea, they would make millions of dollars in profit.

DFC has no respect for the Pioneer of Bouyou music. After their plan blew up in their faces the coming with nice words about the band. The management of CK should not have accepted this offer !! This was the ideal time to get DFC to respect the band. SMH

Shame on you guys can’t believe WCk were not in line up a band made us proud few years ago and wck more popular in the Caribbean then this band from Nigeria, this event is a good opportunity for our groups in Dominica to earned some cash and you guys tried to press them down, you guys should try to circulate that revenue here

I mean, if you have such great things to say about Wck and how well they have played before and how artistic they are then why are they put in after refusal? Like seriously? Wck and Triple Kay is all we have to call our own (band wise ofcourse). So why invite one and not the other?! Stupes if I was Wck manager I would tell DFC management/organizers NOOOO WAYYYY!!

If it was up to me I’d completely cancel WCMF this year. With this whole ebola thing and the influx of people coming to Dominica for WCMF, I would not take that risk!

I support the earlier comment. Why is it when things go bad is when WCK is brought in. Didn’t DFC know WCK is a local band who gives their fans what to expect. No slut, no in your Zouc, but yet still only when a band cannot make it, Plan B is WCK. DFC, come better than that and Keith, you should not allow them to use you. The band has enough values. What a damn shame on DFC. WCK needs to come straight with DFC. Why is it that they have to be treated 2nd class? Yes Sir – we the patrons and the fans both internationally and locally are aware of all this yet – the fans and stakeholders always have to come on social media and bash DFC in order for CK to eventually end up on the lineup.
This being said we happily accept the gig – for two main reasons:
– we love our fans and we wish not to disappoint them
– its business …pay us our money
