Fans of four-time Calypso King Dennison “Dice” Joseph could see him back in the competition.
While Dice, who did not defend his title in last year’s competition missed this month’s eliminations, his writer Pat Aaron is convinced the calypsonian can make a case for his reappearance in the quarter-finals.
Aaron contends the elimination was planned with “little” notice.
“Up to the Thursday, even the Friday, the different guys of the executive were not sure whether the show was going to happen…so I think the association have to understand that any artist who didn’t get to practice, was not really at fault so I guess Dice fell in that category.”
“Also, the precedence has been set that a King coming back into a competition can come back in a quarter-finals… I figure Dice has a case,” Aaron stated, adding that Dice’s return will be in the best interest of the association as Dice is the “crowd-puller” at the calypso events.

I belive that every calypsonian should follow the rules.Pat was against certain calypsonians getting favor in the past now he is pushing the same things he fought against. That is double standard. The rule dealing with past kings was to encourage them to come back to help the art form when it was struggling. A former monarch started in the quarters if his living address was in the foreign. If he or she lived in dominica and was in the island during eliminations you had to start in eliminations. THAT WAS A ONE TIME DEAL. IT WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN EVERY YEAR. Iam please to know we are on the same page, on the SPIDER sceen. maybe you doe remember GIVE ME THE RUM FAST BEFOR DE BAND PASS; HOWLINS and my favorite;ALL THAT I HAVE DOMINICA IS ALL THATI HAVE ;my take why spider did not win more crowns;He always comes out with his second song too late, especially singing it for the frist time the nite of the finals, sometimes the Band messes up because is the frist time playing it in full.Judges don’t pay him full attention, especially when it don’t have the instance impact. Youknow his songs always need a second take to really get it.YEAH i agree with you HE was the greatest composer. I hope during the season they reflect on him and some of his songs.
Now on DICE as much as i like his performances, i think he should agree that he elemenated himself ,after hearing that he performed at that same show, if he stept aside and avert controvers, it will give him time to grow and come again next year, Dusted off and well picked up.He can start a new reign. he is still young,and is time to grow up. DAMAN I must agree with you on the SPIDER – I truly believe that SPIDER was the greatest calypsonian we’ve had in Dominica. You remember the tune “ SO I AM DUTY BOUND”. After SPIDER sang that song I had nothing for respect and admiration. Spider sang that song after he did that song “ Viva Mama Eugenia” that song was a classic too but what was truly admirable is that he demonstrated that he was not for sale – “WHO EVER WANT ME COME AND BUY SPIDER FOR SALE” Spider proved that he was willing to put the politicians in song whenever they do wrong. I hope that someone comes up with a compilation of SPIDER’s calypsos.
Why SPIDER did not win more crowns is still up for argument. At the time the judges claim that he did not take full command of the stage. I somewhat agree but judging the art form –the lyrics, melody and consistency,DAMAN SPIDER remain the greatest composer we’ve had in D/ca

TO my knowledge alot of people i know who had tough chilhood, turn out plenty better than a lot of people who supposedly had easy childhood. DAMAN- I like your question “Do I want to see Dice go away”- The honest answer is no. What I’d like to see is that integrity remain in society. I’d like to see Dice become responsible. I believe in second chances but I also believe that one must be accountable for his or her actions. I also strongly cherish the virtue of humility. Am I perfect –no. Do I work on my imperfections –Yes I do. Role models are not perfect but the role models who fall pick themselves up dust off remain role models in my book. As four time calypso king he should understand or figure wear he can make a solid contribution to society and very importantly how to use his public status to inspire the young people. How can we seat by and claim that it is ok to be disruptive because some entertainers do get into trouble. Are we saying that we should make exceptions for Dice? DAMAN Dice have been misbehaving for the past 8 years- that includes leaving the stage to get involve in gang fights , assault on police and civilians the list goes on. Every time he gets into trouble he blame others and claim that others are jealous of him- Jealous of what. Calypso competition is once a year. There comes a time in life when every man must face the truth- I sincerely hope that this time comes sooner than later. Talk about looking in the mirror this is the moment of truth. There is something called precedent and that has already been set by the Association so YES Dice not only a king but 4-timer should be able to come in at 1/4 finals. If you ask me he is good for the semis (in my humble opinion), Try to see the merit of the whole thing instead of bashing Dice and Pat. While some people may not want to admit, DIce is certainly a crowd puller there is no disputing that. How about giving credit where credit is due and cut off attacking personalities. It’s the same we that idolize artist from everywhere else with no clue of what their backgrounds are and even when we know we still support them so what about a local brother and great artist? I don’t have the facts relating to the exceptions made for other calypsonians at the quarter finals however if Dice must behave as he does then I’d say do not grant him an automatic entry into the elimination. At this point Dice must earn our respect. He has to demonstrate that he has altered and denounces his past ugly behavior and become a good citizen. The rule states that a former King who resides out of state will be allowed to start competing from the Quarter Finals round. The elimination round is usually held in december (there about) so the DCA took in the cost of coming to D/ca for the eliminations which is several weeks before the quarter finals into consideration. Every calypsonian knows the rules. Eliminations is judges only on lyrics & melody & the calypsonian could have sang acapella.
Eliminations date was set before th PM announced elections. Dice knew that. he was on the roster to sing. He chose NOT to sing and therefore should NOT be allowed to compete this year. daddy Chess was once a king and he performed at the Eliminations. calypso was beforte Dice, during Dice and will definitely be there after Dice.
Pat need to stop this. He and Dice needs to settle their differences privately and not involve the DCA and the public into their drama.

Pat Aaron is RIGHT when he said “the precedence has been set that a King coming back into a competition can come back in a quarter-finals” The last time he entered the competition he was king so the law applies to him. This law has been in place for years.
When Jahlee who won calypso queen in the 80s, was absent for many, many years and then return to compete approximately 3-4 years ago for the first time, she was allowed to enter at the quarter-finals. What makes Jahlee and Dice case different when he had only been absent for 1 year? Can the Calypso Association address this?

The reality of the situation is that dice is a lot more talented than a lot of the “veteran” calypsonians who have been there for years some of them never ever won a crown. That is what is burning all of them. Dice will continue to be successful. Pat you must accept that your star is unreliable so you must therefore move on and invest in another calypsonian. I anxiously await the calypso campaign for we know that part of the reason why we had election at Xmas was to avoid the calypso effect.

If you were at the show or you listened, you would have heard Dice’s comment when he came to do a “guest performance”…..”the eliminations is to see who can sing. Everybody knows I can sing; four years now. So I don’t need to go through eliminations.” (something to that effect).

An extremely weak defence. The onus is on the calypsonian to register and be ready for the show whenever it takes place. Whether all or some members of the Association were in fact unaware of the date of the show should have absolutely no bearing on the calypsonian’s readiness. Get ready for the show so, whenever it is announced, you are ready!
Besides, how is it that i, an ordinary citizen, had no doubt by the Thursday preceding the show that the Eliminations would actually take place on the said date but Dice did not know? Additionally, how is it that so many other calypsonians were in no doubt of the date of the show but Dice was?
