Canefield Urban Council dismisses claims of indiscriminate dumping near Canefield Airport

Amid reports of indiscriminate dumping habits opposite a car wash near the Canefield Airport, the Urban Council has sought to clear the air.

“This is a site where we dump selected waste. It is an area where we back fill. Every hurricane season undermines the land there and if we weren’t doing that, the sea would have eaten the road already. But we only dump sand, dirt, grass and other compostable materials there,” Chairman of the Canefield Urban Council, Simeon Albert told Dominica News Online.

When asked whether or not this was a sanctioned practice Albert said, “This is the Council’s dump site. It is controlled by the Council. The Council has the authority to dispose of this type of material there. In fact, if anyone else has to dump there, they would have to seek the council’s permission to do so.”

Albert, who was re-elected to serve the Council last October, said that in his 11 years as Council Chairman this has been a standard practice.

This present political regime has given rise to a set of fools who, every time they open mouth to speak, tell themselves that they are speaking to a country of fools, and you Mr Simeon are one of them and you are very convincing when comes to showcasing yourself as one.

The Council may be in breach of the Beach Protection Act (21) of 1966 if not in possession of the appropriate licence.

Canefield Urban council have their own dump site? Well look it! Mr. Simeon, since when you can use sand and dirt to backfill by the sea? Isn’t that material just food for the sea? What happened to good old road maintenance such as gabian baskets? What qualifies you to decide what material should be used to backfill? How can the council have a dump site on the sea shore? It is pollution plain and simple.

I am a Dominican leaving abroad, and its bad enough that we don’t have enough beaches, and polution spreads, so i hope its just sand and dirt thats being dump there. I often brag about our unspoiled DA and is often ask about our beaches, so i hope we can all contribute far and near by not turning in into a pile, and miles pf trash.

I know this area and people having dumping there for years. A practice that should have never strated in the fist place. For one it is unsightly ,especially from the air when landing at canefield,
secondlly it stifle,s the coral reefs .If this land is being eroded then the people concerned should look
to put some kind of sea defence in place. This is the nature isle for crying out loud.I find it amazing how people can call DOMINICA the gem of the caribbean and then turn around and treat the country so disrespecfully.
