Environment Minister Kenneth Darroux is leading Dominica’s delegation to a climate change conference in Durban South Africa next month.
Darroux said the international community must honor a pledge that will assist less developed countries deal with the impact of climate change and its effects on small island states.
He said several government officials have already left the island, to pave the way for the December meeting.
“Some of team has already left. The technical people left because we have meeting preceding the actual ministerial and high-level segments. The Permanent Secretary and myself along with other high level officials will meet the rest of the team in December,” he explained.
According to Dr. Darroux, all nations agreed that enough talk was done and it’s time for action.
“We are hoping that some of the proposed billions we hear every day that is being pledged for climate change adaptation and mitigation projects can be used in national development. Government spends a lot of money building sea defense walls and other projects, which could be sourced from these climate change funds,” he noted.
